    1. [WVKanawha] Joe's Branch cemeteries (Boone Co.)
    2. sandra lilly
    3. Would anyone on the list know of a cemetery in Boone Co. that's location would be described as "on Joe's Branch in 1916. I am looking for the burial place of Cynthia Meadows Chapman, daughter of Patterson and Ida Meadows. In her "Widows Pension" papers she died 5 Feb. 1916 in Kanawha County and was taken to Boone County for burial on Joe's Branch. If anyone kows where Cynthia's parents are buried that maybe where she is buried too. I looked in the listing of cemeteries for Boone County on the rootsweb site and didn't find but one clue, but it did not say Joe's Branch, it read, "Ferrell Cemetery, location, Comfort up Joe's Ck. Hollow." Any information as to the place of burial for Cynthia or her parents would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Sandra slilly@triad.rr.com

    1. [WVKanawha] Civil War research
    2. Lynn
    3. Hi all, I am just starting some Civil war reserach and would like to request suggestions and/or assitance. I have been advised that some of my LEGG family ancestors were in the 8th and 16th VA Cavalry (Confederate). And subsequent research indicates that at least one was (possibly) in Co A, 7th WV Cavalry (Union). Does anyone out there have any specific info or done research on either of these units or their members? I have already found a few websites dealing with these units. But the information provided was naturally very general in nature and limited. 'Would appreciate any suggestions or assistance in getting started with this branch of genealogy research. 1. [WVKanawha] Adrian Gwin's thoughts on Memorial Day
    2. John Gwin
    3. MEMORIAL DAY IS FOR PEOPLE by Adrian Gwin of the Charleston Daily Mail as reprinted in his 1993 book Once Upon Ago To many of the newer generations, the only meaning of Memorial Day is that it's the day the swimming pool opens. They do not understand what it is and what it means--because it means nothing personal to them. Or it means something that their minds see as negative--they are "against" war and fighting, so Memorial Day which "glorifies war and fighting" is bad and to be avoided. But to the old people like me, Memorial Day is not that at all. Where I grew up--the deep South--Memorial Day was Decoration Day to everyone. It was the day that people decorated the graves of dead servicemen--and everyone else, but servicemen first that day. It's not a memorial-to-war day, as some young people have indicated they believe, but it is a day to honor the memory of individuals who are dead. When Decoration Day comes around again, I will have some thoughts about Bo Ostrovski, John Vardaman, and Grant Beaver. Bo Ostrovski was a light-hearted private in the army when I was in Germany during World War II. He was a member of the first reconnaissance patrol our company sent out in Germany. We found him and other patrol members shot in the backs, their hands tied behind their backs. If I had any idea where Bo is buried, I'd go to decorate his grave with flowers and a flag on May 30. He was my friend. John Vardaman was a volunteer in the Confederate army of 1861, who fought for his and my home area, middle Alabama. He died in 1906 and among his great-great grandchildren are my grandchildren. Were I in Smyrna, Alabama, on May 30, I'd decorate his grave with flowers and a flag. Grant Beaver was a lifelong resident of Leon, Mason County [West Virginia],who knew every serviceman's grave in the Leon Cemetery. For more than fifty years he decorated those graves with a flag every Memorial-Decoration Day. There were about a dozen graves of Union soldiers, and one grave of a Confederate soldier. Grant Beaver always decorated the Confederate's grave along with the Union soldiers' graves. He put a United States flag on every grave as a decoration. "The Confederate fought and gave his life for the cause he believed in. He did what he thought was right, I reckon, so I should decorate his grave, too," Grant told me years ago as he put flags on those graves for about the fiftieth time. Grant wasn't memorializing war--he was remembering human beings who had had a vital, fatal part in preserving this country for him and the rest of us. So I say to all who do not understand why we decorate servicemen's graves on memorial Day--we do it because they are a basic part of why we are here in the condition we are in--they got us where we are, so let's honor their memory. Let us remember the Bo Ostrovskis and the John Vardamans, and let us, like Grant Beaver, decorate every grave, because those people died fighting for what they believed was right. For those waiting for Memorial Day only for the swimming, there is a generation gap for sure. ---------------------------------- U.S. Army Sergeant Adrian S. Gwin, my dad, died two years ago this month, and I submit this article to you in his memory and honor on behalf of his widow and my mother, Dorothy, and my brother, Adrian and Dot's second son, Pat. Have a healthy and memorable Memorial Day, everyone! In Jesus, John (Complete contact information follows in signature.) ======================================================== John M. 3. Back around 1962 I took a girl friend to a cemetery to see her mother who was tending a grave. This cemetery was in the construction zone for the new 4 lane route 60, located in the middle and just up river a bit from Georges Creek. We turned off of the old 2 lane route 60 to get to it. That's it, just a vague memory. Jerry

    3. If you're in Malden (right outside Charleston) and you go out Georges Creek Drive, there'e a road to the left called Hawes Drive. The entrance to the cemetery that I am aware of is from Hawes drive. (There may an entrance that I'm not aware of.) As I remember the cemetery, it was basically the side of a hill. Most of what I remember was not very well kept up, but it seems that a few family plots were kept up pretty good. It has been many years since I've been there. My Campbell grandparents (both now deceased) lived on Hawes drive. My ancestors buried in the cemetery on the hill are Kelly and (I think) Dent. 1. [WVKanawha] Cabin Creek Towns
    2. A number of months ago there were several inquiries about Cabin Creek. My curiosity has gotten the best of me, so I'm sending this question: Is there someone out there that can fill in the blanks for me? I asked an older friend who lived on Cabin Creek for years in the 40s & 50s to name the towns for me. Somewhere along her recitation my writing slowed down (and she knew them all so well) that I cannot put them all together now that I've been thinking about it. Starting at what we called Cabin Creek Junction, there were: Weathy Acre Dry Branch Wet Branch Sharon Miami Dawes Ohley Eskdale Leewood (then there was a junction) Left fork to Black Snake Fork Laing Nabobe (another left fork that included) Jockens Carbon Republic (a right fork) Decota Wevaco United Nonomine (always thought it was Notamine with a long, long "I") (end of the road) And somewhere in there is Red Warrior and Kayford. Can someone set me straight? About how far (many miles) is it from Cabin Creek Junction to the end of the road at Nonomine? Thanks, Barbara BBarken73@aol.com

    3. There is a Georges Creek Cemetery in Malden, I have several Kelly ancestors (and I think 1 Dent ancestor) buried there. I don't know of a list of burials. I don't think it is very well taken care of (except for a few family plots). At least that's the way it was several years ago. 1. [WVKanawha] KIRK + DILLON
    2. Laura McKenzie
    3. Does anyone have any information on a Howard Kirk born around 1890? He was the partner of my great-grandfather, Franklin Hubert Dillon. A cover of some sheet music I have has Howard Kirk's name on it. I would like to talk to his descendants to see if they know of my great-grandfather. Frank Dillon died at a very young age. Just before Christmas (I think this was 1932?) he jumped into the Kanawha to save a drowning man. He died of pneumonia as a result. I have reason to believe that his father was "Bone" Dillon of St Albans and his mother's name was Gertrude. "Bone" Napolean Bonaparte Dillon s/o Robert Dillon and Adelia Wood. I have had little luck beyond this sketchy information.
