In studying the 1840 Kanawha Co. census, I am trying to narrow down who could be the father of James Madison Atkinson b. 1821-1823. James would have been between 15 & 20. Only these have sons between 15 & 20: James Atkinson (Pg. 56 unknown township) John Atkinson (Charleston township) Maybe this will help someone help me make the connection to James' parents! Thanks. Karen

Dear Fellow Researchers: Happy Thanksgiving! I am hoping to find someone that can help me locate the parents of James Madison Atkinson b. 1821-1823 in Va and died 1883 in Kanawha Co., WV. He was buried 8/2/1883 in the Spring Hill Cemetery. His wife was Julia Ann McClanahan b. 3/31/1829 d. Feb 1905. Would there possibly be obits or death records that might reveal the parents names? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Karen Palm City, FL

Well, the world may be getting sicker every minute, but THIS NOTICE IS A HOAX that has been circulating on the internet since 2000! Before that, the HOAX was that HIV needles were being left in theatre seats, or payphone coin returns. There is no Abraham Sands. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have no reported cases of AIDS from needle-stick injury to anyone outside the health care field. Please go to www.snopes.com and search (on this one search for "HIV needles") every time you get one of these "too horrible (or too good) to believe" warnings. The really sickos are the people who start these things and laugh every time they see another 200,000 of them hit the web when folks mail them to their entire address books. This is naught but another darn fool hoax dreamed up by someone intent upon enjoying the sight of the Internet community thrown into another panic. Don't contribute to it by passing along this humbug.
Please Check Gas Pumps: This world gets sicker every day! Folks please take a couple minutes to read this warning about gas pump handles. Warning: look at the gas pump handle BEFORE you pump your gas Please read and forward to anyone you know who drives a car. My name is Captain Abraham Sands of the Jacksonville, Florida Police Department. I have been asked by state and local authorities to write this email in order to get the word out to car drivers of a very dangerous prank that is occurring in numerous states. Some person or persons have been affixing hypodermic needles to the underside of gas pump handles! These needles appear to be infected with HIV positive blood. In the Jacksonville area alone there have been 17 cases of people being stuck by these needles over the past five months. We have verified reports of at least 12 others in various states around the country. It is believed that these may be copycat incidents due to someone reading about the crimes or seeing them reported on the television. At this point no one has been arrested and catching the perpetrator(s) has become our top priority. Shockingly, of the 17 people who where stuck, eight have tested HIV positive and because of the nature of the disease, the others could test positive in a couple years. Evidently the consumers go to fill their car with gas, and when picking up the pump handle get stuck with the infected needle. IT IS IMPERATIVE TO CAREFULLY CHECK THE HANDLE of the gas pump each time you use one. LOOK AT EVERY SURFACE YOUR HAND MAY TOUCH, INCLUDING UNDER THE HANDLE! If you do find a needle affixed to one, immediately contact your local police department so they can collect the evidence. PLEASE HELP US BY MAINTAINING A VIGILANCE AND BY FORWARDING THIS EMAIL TO ANYONE YOU KNOW WHO DRIVES. THE MORE PEOPLE WHO KNOW OF THIS THE BETTER PROTECTED WE CAN ALL BE. PLEASE READ THIS AND PASS IT ON TO EVERYONE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK!!!!

Your information was quite helpful. I now have another question. There are a couple of cemeteries in the area of Dry Branch I have an inquiry about. I was wondering if anyone has a transcript or access to a transcript of the Dry Branch Cemetery and the Hensley Cemetery in that area. There are also a couple of small cemeteries in that area also but I dont know the name of them. I found the names of the cemeteries when I pulled up the Topozone map from USGS that someone forwarded to me. My G Grandfather could possibly be buried in one these. His name was Shelby Gibbs. He was killed in a mining accident in that area. Could possibly be buried in one of those cemeteries. Thanks for any help on this. By lore, my gggg grandparents lived in a fort near St. Albans. They were John and Margaret (Compton) Kinder. The fort they lived in was attacked by Indians circa 1790. John Kinder was killed being white. Margaret and their twins, John and Barbara, walked to the Cabin Creek area from St. Albans to another fort. Margaret was half NA and spared with the twins during the Indian attack. There at the new fort, Margaret met Daniel Javins, married, and had more children. The family spread into Boone Co. - the Kinders and Javinses. There was once a trail connecting the Cabin Creek area with what is now Rt. 3 along through Racine and on up. It was not what became Rt. 119 over Lens Creek Mtn. There are many connedctions between families in Cabin Creek and the Coal River area of Boone. Has anyone heard of Comptons in that area. Margaret must have had a white Compton father and an Indian mother. One of the Kinder twins, John, married Mary Ward in 1807 in Boone Co. Mary was the dtr of an Indian scout James Ward and his Indian wife. The other twin, Barbara Kinder, married a Preston the same day as her twin married Mary Ward in 1807. Does any of this ring bells with anyone? Thank you. Rick Stewart

Cabin Creek is a general area made up of so many smaller towns, but I believe that there is a site that lists mine deaths. The state capital archives also has these records Carl Tyler
