    1. [WVKANAWH] Migration From Franklin County, VA
    2. Am trying to compile a list of the families that migrated to Raleigh, Fayette, Wyoming, Boone, Kanawha & Monroe Counties of VA/WV from the Franklin County, VA area during the 1840-1860 time period. I'll start with the PETERS & STOVER surnames. (The PETERS group includes two different groups.) Can anyone add to this list? Thank you in advance for any information or guidance. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]

    2. Seeking any information about Frederick Coon who was born ca 1795 per the 1850 Kanawha Co, now WV census. He shows up in the 1830 Kanawha Co Census with quite a large family. His wife in 1850 is Nancy, she later marries Robert Poore. I suspect that Nancy is his second or third wife. Family legend is that this Coon family was from PA...Please help....Lyle Corder

    3. I was in Charleston this past May and went to the State Vital Records office which had just moved into the old Diamond building. They could not accommodate me because of the move, but I left my orders and money. I received all but one death record. I had an uncle who died in the flu epidemic in Charleston in 1918 and they didn't have a record of his death. I am almost sure that all flu deaths were reported and recorded. What I would like to know is, in 1918 were deaths still being recorded by the county and not the state? Has anyone else had a non recorded death in 1918? Just need to know where to go from here. Thanks for any help. Betty in Idaho

Before, I would just send them the > person's name and the date of the event along with any other info I knew > about the individual. > I can tell you from an experience I had that some of the folks that work there are less than anxious to help with geneology related services if they are busy. I went there in person this past spring and spent several hours looking up things. They would not allow me to make the copies myself so I had to wait until someone could do the copies for me. They said I would only receive help if no one was in line for help unrelated to geneology and would just have to wait. So I did. After quite awhile one of the ladies said she didn't think they'd be able to get around to me today because they were so busy. Mind you I wasn't just waiting my turn, if someone else walked up after I was there they still got precedence over me. So, I asked then how I might get copies and she said I'd have to write for them. Then I got angry and told her I had come there all the way from Alabama and she was telling me I'd have to turn around and write anyway. They ended up making the copies but I have to tell you they really made me feel like a giant thorn in their backsides. I did all the looking up, pulled out the volumes to the proper pages and all they had to do was copy them and they didn't even want to mess with that. It wouldn't surprise me if they ignored written requests depending on who opened them. Surely they don't all act that way. I would call and ask in addition to writing or try the archives who I'm told has copies of all the records the clerk has depending on the time frame your looking for. Plus I've heard they are much friendlier. Good Luck, Lisa

    1. [WVKANAWH] Genealogist's Christmas/Cousins
    2. Christmas for genealogists can come at any time of the year. We receive our gifts throughout the year. They are cheap in terms of dollars but are priceless to each of us. Gifts may include a marriage bond or a picture of a tombstone. There may be new documentation that takes us back another generation or a picture of our ancestors. This year my great aunt gave me a picture of my great grandparents riding off on horseback toward their honeymoon. The gifts may come in the form of a family Bible or handwritten letter. My mother recently gave me a 1951 letter that my father wrote from the war zone of Korea to his family in West Virginia. It was nice to see his penciled writing on the faded letter and to share in some of the feelings that he experienced as a teenager in the cold hell of Korea. But the most beautiful gift that a genealogist can receive is a cousin. I'd like to use this forum to thank all of you for your energy & effort. Many of you have been there for me re: problems that did not relate to family history. I'm proud to call each of you a cousin & even prouder to list you among my friends. Merry Christmas to all! May the new year bring with it a chance to rekindle old relationships & an opportunity to cultivate new ones. And remember to share your information. As good as it feels to get these gifts, it feels even better to give them. As always, thank you for your support & as my Grandma Coleman used to say, "Ya'll come!" Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]

She is the volunteer look-up for the Spring Hill Cemetery Book on the Kanawha County GenWeb website <http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvkanawh/>. She also published the books. The book only has name, whether there is a stone or not and the birth, death and burial dates. But it's a good place to start. After you have the death or burial date you can write to the Kanawah County Clerk's office or WV Vital Records for a copy of the death certificate. The death certificate will have the date of birth (most times). Might I suggest some things. These are things that tremedously helped me when I first started. First, if you don't get any quick responses from the queries, bare in mind a couple of things, either the ones who belong to the list are either busy due to holiday rush or perhaps they're attempting to look up some info for you and can't email you back until they have something. A lack of response could me there is no one looking or it could mean that the info you're requesting just takes a little longer to gather. Second, you might try petitioning the "Look-Up" volunteers on the Kanawha County GenWeb website. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvkanawh/klookup.htm They are usually very happy to do a look up in a particular marriage book or census record. There is someone on there who will look up "some" of the districts in 1900, 1910, & 1920 Kanawha Co. censuses. This would be a great place to start. If you know his approximate birth year, find the census closest after his birth. He should be on there with his parents. There are a couple of people on there who have a marriage book that ranges from 1885-89. This might be of some help. Also, don't forget his siblings. If you can't find a marriage record for him, try one of his siblings marriage records. They might have his parent's names on their marriage liscense. Just thought I'd throw you a couple of things to think about. You might already know all of this, if so, just disregard my letter. If not, keep trying, just be patient and resorseful! -- Cara Showers Anchorage, Alaska [email protected] From: [email protected] Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2000 21:21:44 EST To: [email protected] Subject: [WVKANAWH] James Buchanan KUHN/COON m Alma Winfree, Kanawha Co, WV Resent-From: [email protected] Resent-Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2000 18:21:41 -0800 Hoping there is a marriage book out there that will show the parents of James Buchanan Kuhn/Coon who married Alma Winfree about 1890-1900 in Kanawha Co, WV. I've asked on numerous occsions for copies of birth and death certificates but have never had them send me anything. I'm wondering if I send them the actual volume and page number if they'll send me something. Before, I would just send them the person's name and the date of the event along with any other info I knew about the individual. Also I'm curious, if I send them a volume and page number, will they send me a copy of the page in the register book or do they send it in the form of a certificate? And if it's a certificate is it one that's typed up on an as needed basis or is there an original certificate with every birth/marriage/death. I know with the Monroe County Courthouse, they have original marriage certificates that were created on the day of the marriage. I'm wondering if Kanawha County has the same system or do they only have what's in their register books?
