I am not positive, but I believe there are some city directories at the Kanawha County Genealogy Society. I hope to go again the next time it is open, which I believe is Tuesday night. I will see what I can find out for you. If you want to e-mail me privately, with the people you want looked up, I will try my best. Kathy
Found these two little articles in our local newspaper, The Lafayette Daily Courier, Lafayette, Indiana (Tippecanoe Co.) August 21, 1861: The New State of Kanawha The Provisional Convention in session at Wheeling yesterday, adopted the ordinance creating a new State, reported by the select committee on the division of the State, by a vote of fifty to twenty -- The ordinance provides for the election of delegates to a convention to form a constitution, at the same time the question for or against a new State shall be submitted to the people within the proposed boundary. The election is to be held on the 24th of October next. The name of the new State is to be Kanawha. The utmost harmony prevailed in the convention. The convention will adjourn tomorrow. August 28, 1861: The New State of Kanawha The thirty-eight counties included in the new state of Kanawha have an aggregate population of 281,786. The whole population of Virginia in 1861 was 1,593,199, including 495,826 slaves, leaving a white population of 1,097,373. There are only 6,288 slaves in the new state, so that in losing this population of 281,000, Virginia loses about one-fourth of her white inhabitants. Even though the next article isn't related to Kanawha, or to my own county, I thought you might get a chuckle out of it. I laughed out loud when I read it in the library! October 4, 1861: A man in Lacrosse, a few days ago, rushed to the river swearing that he would drown himself. When he had waded in to the depth of his waist, his wife, who had followed him, seized him by the hair, and then, as Brick Pomeroy describes it, she "pulled him back till they reached a place where the water was about two feet deep where she pulled him over backward, soused him under, and pulled his head up again. 'Drown yourself (down he went) leave me to father the brats, (another plunge), get drunk, (another souse); and start for the river, (another dip), better use water instead of rotgut, (another dip and shake of his head); I'll learn you to leave me a widow, and all the men at the war.' After sozzling him to her heart's content, she led him out a wetter if not a better man, and escorted him into the house and closed the door."
If you get any answers from this one could you please share it with the board. I would love to know the same, about the city directory. I'm more looking for the years of 1900-1920, though. -- Cara Showers Anchorage, Alaska [email protected] Volunteer of Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at http://raogk.rootsweb.com From: [email protected] Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 10:45:34 EST To: [email protected] Subject: [WVKANAWH] Kanawha County City Directories for 1920-1930? My mother even said she could show me where, but last time I was home, there was too much stuff going on to go and look to see where she was talking about. Since Margaret lived at LensCreek with Hiram Morris, I wonder if Benjamin and Salinda did as well. These Morris' and Prices do seem to have been 'close' I still wonder if that 1850 census that says Ben came from SC was an error. The quote you have from 'History of Charleston and Kanawha Co' makes it sound like they came together and the others weren't from SC. but then another book says there were a lot of SC Prices that came there, boy it just goes on and on, but I keep hoping that every new theory will take us somewhere and we will finally find a home for Ben. Then we still have to find Salinda..... Does anyone have anything new on her, as to whether her last name was really Brokins? Gracie Hi Emma, Eliza Price married to Thomas Snodgrass is my line. Like you I have been stumped on Benjamin born 1795 SC. However, some believe his father to be Edmund Price married to Elizabeth Morris. There were Prices that lived in the Len's Creek (named after Leonard Morris) area of Kanawha County at that time. I do not have any documentation for this. I have Thomas Snodgrass' father as Henry Snodgrass. There follows a quote from "History of Charleston and Kanawha County- - - - - -", by Laidley, "Leonard Morris whose settlement in the valley is elsewhere noticed in this work, built the first cabin in the district. Other settlers, nearly all of whom came before the beginning century, were ----- - - - - -Evan Price, Henry Snodgrass, Benjamin Price - - - - - - - - - ". There were many Prices living in that community (now known as Marmet). Leonard Morris was married first to Margaret Price. I cannot locate my references or notes now (but, there was NO firm documentation) which state that Joshua Morris (brother to Leonard) had a daughter Elizabeth Morris who married Edmund Price (I do have this reference from Morris genealogies). Supposedly Benjamin was their son---? I know what the 1850 census says about SC. So, thats a big question. I also have from the History of Greenbriar County that the Price family from that area of WV and Virginia descended from one Samuel Price who emmigrated from Wales about 1735 and settled in South Carolina. Over the years I have communicated with many who are struggling with this line. You so have a very interesting theory with the similarity of names! Good luck! Ray Honaker, Colorado

If this e-mail from this point on makes no sense, well that's a Price for ya and I'll try again....:) OK, let's get this going. You and Gracie are for the line of Margaret Price and Wiley Cooper. Margaret's parents being Ben & Sallie Price. I myself live in TX. But my dad was born and raised in Brownstown/Marmet, WV. Jane Price Fontalbert also still lives in Marmet and is the daughter of Barnard Meredith Price. This Barnard Price was this son of Benjamin F. Price. Now this here Ben F. Price in the brother of my grandfather, John Clarence Price I. Let me do this: Ben F. Price m. Salinda Brokins/Price children: 1.Charles Price ( which there was a Charles Brokins in Kan. CO. at that time) Do we have anything else to prove that Salinda was a Brokins, except the annotated census? ---------------------------------------------------------snip------------------------------------------------ 2. France Ann Price m J. Vickers 3. Eliza Price whom had Floyd and Leftrich Price out of wedlock and then married T. Snodgrass. ( Floyd and Letfrich were raised by the grandparents, Ben and Sallie Price). 4. Margaret Price whom had several kids with Hiram Morris and then married W. Cooper. ( This is yours and Gracies line right?) Yes, our line is Margaret Price and Wiley Cooper, through their daughter Octavia. ---------------------------------------------------------snip------------------------------------------------ 5. Mary Price 6. Meredith P. Price m. Mary Scott. (My Line) 7. Andrew Price This Meredith and Mary Scott children: 1. Benjamin F. Price b- KY. M. Mattie Jane Author there first child was Bernard Meredith Price m Thelma ? Bernard & Thelma Price are the parents of Jane Price Fontalbert that still lives in Marmet, WV. 2. John Clarence Price I. m. Lona Dala Myers, the d/o John Myers and Narcissus Griffith Myers. John And Lona Price's child: John C. Price II. m Margaret Bell VanCamp (this is my parents. Can you tell me where to find that Salinda/Sallie Price was living with the granddaughter Octivia. What County or anything like that? Maybe Jane can go and do some more looking for us..:) Here is where I get confused. Are you talking about mine and Chris' Octavia? I don't have that, in 1870 she is with her parents, Wiley Cooper and Margaret Price and in 1880, she is married to Allen Bowles. We have an application for Margaret Price filed for a pension from the civil war and I think (without actualy) looking that Margaret was living in Winifred. I sure wish we could find a death record or at least a date for Benjamin Price and his wife Salindy/Salinda. I have that Benjamin died in 1868, if that date is accurate(and I don't even remember where I got it) seems like we could find him in the 1860 census, unless of course he moved to another county. According to an uncle of mine, Octavia inherited some land at Lens Creek Mt and her son Wiley Bowles sold that land. according to him there was a lot of misunderstanding over who owned it, so I am wondering if anyone has got any land records on this. Octavia Cooper md Allen Bowles at Marmet(Brownstone) so maybe Ben and Salinda died in Boone Co? ---------------------------------------------------------snip------------------------------------------------ If she was living with her granddaughter and you have the area, well just maybe Sallie died there abbots and maybe we can come across a death record for her, and then her parents maybe listed on it....:) am I hoping for a miracle? I wouldn't blame you if you were hoping for a miracle Emma, I think we need one. LOL Gracie

Hi Everyone, I have a couple of requests to make, and would appreciate any help anyone can provide. I am trying to get directions to Rock Creek in Roane County somewhere along Ambler's Ridge. It is my understanding the Runnions, Larch, and Moore lived in the area, and this is my line. I am hoping to get directions there so I can visit. Also, can anyone tell me if it is still a holler, or does it have a church and store or anything? I would like to check with the nearest Church to see if they can provide me with some information. Also, how far is Rock Creek from Elkview? My great grandfather lived in Elkview, and there is not any information showing on him. The Elkview Genealogy society said that they have no record of him. And again is there anyone on the list descended from Elijah Runnion (Runyon) and Ida Mae Schoolcraft? Does anyone know the former Gladys Runnion (Runyon)? Thank you and have a great day, Juanita

Someone asked me in the last couple of months about the St. Albans History Book. I am sorry, but I have lost the address. I hope the person is still on this list. I was finally able to contact the historical society today and they still have copies of the book. They are $50.00. If you are interested, let me know and I will find out the procedure you need to take. The lady that normally handles this is going out of town for 5 weeks and I was given another number to call. I was unable to reach her to find out where to send the money, etc. You may e-mail me personally, or I will look for a reply here on the Kanawha County list. Kathy in St. Albans
