    1. [WVKANAWH] Charleston Newspapers
    2. Cara Showers
    3. I just found this online and thought I'd share it with the list. You can search the 4 newspapers in Charleston from 1985 to the present. Here's what it says about the site: The Charleston Newspapers News Library contains stories from The Charleston Gazette, Charleston Daily Mail, Sunday Gazette-Mail as well as Metro East, North and West. Articles within the library were published as far back as January 1985 and as current as one week ago. You may search the library site for free. Retrieve the full text of any article within the library for only $1.95 per article. There are also discounts available with the Charleston Newspapers News Library multi-article packages. Searches produce a list of articles with the headline, date, word count and a few sentences of each story. To get started follow the steps below: -- Cara Showers Anchorage, Alaska [email protected] GREGORY, LOISEAU, ADKINS, GIBSON, JONES, HACKNEY, HARKINS, RUFFNER, BOWLES, COX, CARNEY, WILLIAMS, THOMAS Volunteer of Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at http://raogk.rootsweb.com

    3. I found my g-g-grandfather listed in the 1893 R.L. Polk & Co.'s Dental Register of the U.S., Volume 1. I thought I'd share some other names that were listed in Charleston and St. Albans area: BOGGESS, Charles BOGGESS, J.G. BUTTS, J. Fleetwood CARR, Wm. C. GREGORY, J.W. MAHAN, James N. MILLER, Jefferson ROGERS, Charles H. VAN VLECK, E. Hillsworth VAN VLECK, J.A. DAVIS, E. Douglas RANSOM, James M. TOMLINSON, T.W. Some of these names have small bios about their profession next to them. Also listed are many other towns in WV. Though I only have a copy of the towns in alpha order from Bluefield to Romney. -- Cara Showers Anchorage, Alaska [email protected] GREGORY, LOISEAU, ADKINS, GIBSON, JONES, HACKNEY, HARKINS, RUFFNER, BOWLES, COX, CARNEY, WILLIAMS, THOMAS Volunteer of Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at http://raogk.rootsweb.com

    3. Lisa, Well, this may be a stretch, but see if any names here connect with you. The surname is subject to so many corruptions that it is difficult to follow. My grandfather Henry was unable to write, but he always pronounced the word without an "r": Mucommic. But my mother and her sisters were McCormick. I've been looking for quite a while for William's family. McCormick. The 1890 census of Kanawha county shows the family as being headed by William MCCOMMIC. My grandfather was William's son Henry. I know that he was born and spent his entire life in the general area of Marmet/Cabin Creek/Paint Creek, WV, being born in the head of Field's Creek, Winifrede. 3. Well, I went to the LDS tonight to look up the names you all had given me. It will take a little longer than I'd hoped. I will email you all privately - the one's I was able to get to tonight. If you don't get an email from me, that means I couldn't get to yours. I will try to go back this Saturday, but if I can't, I'll be going back next Wed. My Wed night trip to the LDS. I was able to find alot of my ancestors. This is good, because that means I'll be renting some more microfilm of the actual deed books. I'll let you know if I will be renting any that your ancestors are in. -- Cara Showers Anchorage, Alaska [email protected] Volunteer of Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at http://raogk.rootsweb.com

    1. [WVKANAWH] State Board of Dentistry
    2. Cara Showers
    3. I know this might be a shot in the dark, but my mom always said 'it never hurts to ask.' So I'll ask. Does anyone know anything about the WV State Board of Dentistry? I am trying to see if they hold licensure for dentists who practiced in Kanawha Co. from about 1860-1910(ish). I'm wondering if the state board of dentistry might provide licensure info on a dentist who would have practice in the late 1800s. I was told by the American Dental Assoc. that these licensures would be held by local authorities and that maybe the county courthouse or the archives might copies of the licensures for this time period. Does anyone know anything about this? -- Cara Showers Anchorage, Alaska [email protected] Volunteer of Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at http://raogk.rootsweb.com

    2. Cara Showers
    3. I wanted to touch bases with all those who wrote me to do look ups for them in the Grantee Index. I'm going tonight to do the look ups. I will try to get them all done. There were quite a few, so I may not have time to do them all tonight. There were many of you who just gave me surnames. This will probably generate just a long list of names that you can sift through to see if there's a match anywhere. I will most likely be renting the microfilm for the Deed Books for the years that I find some matches for my ancestors. If I find some of my ancestors in the Grantee index, I'll let you all know which Deed Books I'll be renting so I can get a copy of the actual deed for you. If the costs become to prohibitive for me to do this, I'll let you know, but I'm sure it won't. It's only $.25 a copy at the LDS. I'll get in touch with you all to let you know what I find. Any last minute takers? I can add you to my list real quick. Need to have the email by 9pm EST (that's 5pm Alaska Time). -- Cara Showers Anchorage, Alaska [email protected] Volunteer of Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at http://raogk.rootsweb.com

    2. Kathy Jones-Kristof
    3. If you plan to use the parking garage at the WV State Capital, take a supply of coins with you. The payment system is through a ridiculous machine that requires you to know what space number you're parked in and how long you're planning to stay. Once you've input that information into the machine, you then insert coins to pay for the time requested.

    2. Hello list, Just thought that anyone planning a trip to the WV Archives in the next 60 days should know that parking is a NIGHTMARE during the legislative session. For the first few weeks, Saturday should be less of a problem, but as the session winds down, it'll be bad then as well. In the past there's been shuttle buses that will take you from a parking area some distance away, but I don't know if they're doing it this year. Linda

    1. [WVKANAWH] SMITH
    2. Lee Carroll
    3. I am searching for a needle in a haystack. I am looking for information on a man named SAMUEL SMITH. He lived in the Kanawha Valley and was born between 1890-1899, and died between 1955-1965. I never knew his wifes real name, I only knew her as Mommy Smith. Samuel had a child out of wedlock with a woman named Hinkley, and Sam and his wife raised her as her mom died. Sam and his wife had several children, and one was Samuel Jr. He died in an automobile accident in another state and was brought to Cunningham Funeral Home. This is all that I know. I hope that someone can help us. ........................................................ iWon.com http://www.iwon.com why wouldn't you? ........................................................
