Hello List, I was hoping someone could help me out concerning my great grandmother Mary Catherine Moore. She was born to James Monroe Moore and Mahala Shafer, in the year 1862-1867. She married Elijah Runnion in 1889. Her grandfather Jacob Shafer signed the marriage papers. It is my understanding that Mary Catherine Moore killed herself, but I have been unable to come up with a death date. Has anyone on the list got any information on her and her estimated date of death? I found her children living in other households the year of 1900. So I know she died sometime from around 1895-1900. I am hoping to come up with a date on her death and also find out where she is buried. Any information would be deeply appreciated. Thank you, Juanita
Hello everyone, I recently obtained a book and it had the following information in it: A. W. Plant's book C & R R R I can't find anything to show that there was such a thing as C & R railroad. Does anyone on the list know for sure if there was a C & R Railroad? thank you, Juanita

Well, I've gotten a couple of grantee index entries that are puzzling me and I was wondering if there's anyone here who has read these deed indexes before and might be able to help me decifer them. I'm wondering what all the abbreviations mean and also where these places are: Lot 14 Bk 4 Amandaville, Coalsmouth Pt Lot 28 Charleston Extension Is the first one a cemetery plot? Lot 14 Block 4 sounds like a cemetery plot to me. And where is this Charleston Extension and what does the "Pt" stand for? I am looking for information about Virgie Mae Conner and Atlee Conner her brother. They were sons of George Kendall Conner. ANy information would help. Pat
Cara, I'm not sure regarding private people, but I work in a realty office in Charleston and whenever realtors are in need of a deed we are required to provide a deed book and page number to receive a copy of the deed. You may need to contact them to see what is actually required for a search. And you can get copies too. I think they will do a search for you, but I am not positive about that. Maybe someone else knows about that, I have been there myself, they are in the Clerks Office. Hello Cara and all, My husband and I went to the Courthouse at Charleston to check on some land deeds that my grandfather had. There was a lady who gave us a briefing and showed us the first time how to look things up. When we didn't understand something, she explained it briefly when she had some free time. We were able to obtain some information by the briefing she gave us. I can't remember her name (been a few years), but she was young and sweet. I was told that the library had some books that will help you to understand how to do a successful look up too. And if anyone needs something from (Roane County) Spencer, Charlie White is a sweetheart. He helped us out quite a bit when we were there. He even gave us a brief history. Imagne our shock when he said he looked up something for someone and it turned out to be a prenuptial agreement in the 1800's if a divorce was ever to occur. That was a intresting piece of history for us. Hope this helps. Juanita

Am searching for information re: the family of my aunt, Gwendlene "Tootie" JACKSON, who married my Uncle James PETERS. According to my information, Gwendlene "Tootie" Jackson was born 6 May 1923 to James JACKSON & Della ??? ( maiden name unknown). James JACKSON & Della ??? also had another daughter named Garnett. After James JACKSON's death Della ??? married William Compton & they also had two children -- Denzil & Wanda COMPTON. Gwendlene "Tootie" JACKSON first married Mac/Mack KIDD & they had the following children: Ronald Gene KIDD, born circa 1941 Sonja Kay KIDD, born circa 1943 Mac/Mack KIDD died in 1942, a casualty of WWII, just prior to the birth of his daughter. Gwendlene "Tootie" Jackson married second, James Alvin Peters on 3 January 1948. James Alvin PETERS & Gwendlene lived for a time, just after their marriage, in Raleigh County & had the following children: Carolyn Jean PETERS, born 22 October 1948 Debra Ann PETERS, born 12 November 1953 James Alvin PETERS & Gwendlene also lived on Toney's Branch, Bloomingrose, Boone County, WV & are interred in a cemetery in Orgas, WV. The KIDDs may have been from around the Cabin Creek area of Kanawha County. Does anyone know Della's maiden name or have any information re: the ancestry of either James Jackson or Mac/Mack Kidd? Thank you in advance for any information. I look forward to reading your E-mails. Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]

The Kanawha County Courthouse will look up records when the request is made by mail. Unfortunately this is not a first come first serve system. All genealogy request are put on the bottom of the list to be taken care of during slow times. Their main focus is the present and not the past. If your request are not specific, they probably won't search for the information. I know we all get frustrated when we can't do the actual research ourselves and must rely on state and county employees to help but let us not forget that without those employees we would have no records to search. They record and file information daily for future genealogist. "Patience is a virtue of which I have little." Crystal R. Clark

Now I'm wondering how I'm supposed to get a copy of a deed if not through the LDS microfilm. >> Cara, According to "The Handybook for Genealogists" by Everton Publishers (a "must have" for any researcher), the clerk's office does have land records beginning from 1790 to the present. They also have births and deaths from 1853, marriages from 1824 and probate records from 1831. I don't know how Kanawha Co. works on deeds, but I've personally written other courthouses and requested a copy of the direct index and also the reverse index (otherwise called grantee or grantor) for the particular surname I happen to be working on at the time. I don't know what their photocopy rates are now, so depending on the number of pages you'd have to make the decision whether it was worth the cost or not. It might be worth a call to get their copy rates and talk with the clerk about the indexes -- or you might just prefer to write. I also know most courthouse will look up marriages, births, and deaths for you if you give them specific information and make copies. If you don't have a specific year most courthouses are happy to work within a 10-year timeframe estimate. Again, I don't know if Kanawha will do this or not. I haven't dealt with the Kanawha courthouse through the mail, but I was there about 3 years ago so I do know that they have the above records at the courthouse. Hope this has helped you. Neva
I know there's going to be a barage of emails once RootsWeb is back up, but I thought I'd go ahead and put this one and and hope it get's seen by people. I've found alot of my ancestors listed in the Grantee Index I've been telling you guys about. But one thing I'm wondering about. On the LDS library, they have microfilm of the deed books but only up to book 123. I can't seem to find any deed books higher than this. Now I'm wondering how I'm supposed to get a copy of a deed if not through the LDS microfilm. Is there someplace to write for them and if so, what's the cost. I don't know if the Kanawha County Courthouse holds land deeds or if they even make copies and mail them out. I'd write WV Archives, but they'll charge me $10 per request (I think I'm allowed put 2 requests in a letter). I'd much rather get them on microfilm and look them up myself. That'll only cost me $3.25 each, or less, if there's more than one deed on a roll of film. But if I have to, I can write the WV Archives. But if I do, does anyone know if I can send all my requests in one letter, but send them enough money to cover the cost of all the requests ($10 per 2 requests) or do I have to send a letter with only 2 requests and a check for $10 for each and every set of requests? (hope that makes sense) Also, does anyone know of a good website that lists abbreviations for land indexes and deeds? -- Cara Showers Anchorage, Alaska [email protected] GREGORY, LOISEAU, ADKINS, GIBSON, JONES, HACKNEY, HARKINS, RUFFNER, BOWLES, COX, CARNEY, WILLIAMS, THOMAS Volunteer of Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at http://raogk.rootsweb.com
