Hi - Is anyone researching Martin's of Charleston WV? I have determined my grandfather was a Dr. Ray Martin, of same, dentist who had an older sister Eula, and at least two brothers, both also dentists, one a suicide. I'm estimating all to have been born circ 1900-1905. All but Eula re deceased prior to 1955. I understand they belonged to the Yacht club, and Eula had at least two marriages, and one daughter, Thelma. First I wanted to offer to look up the deed for you, if you'll send me the book and page number and names. I can make a print out of the deed and mail it to you, if you want. You know I have rented the film through the local LDS for many volumes of the Kanawha Co. grantor land deed books. But if your deed is not in a book I've rented, I can suggest a couple of avenues: #1, I would recommend that you rent the microfilm through your local LDS, like I did. That is, of course, assuming you have an LDS locally. You can check their website for localities: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp They only charge $3.25 per roll and the copies are, I think, $.50 each, if they have a microfilm printer. And depending on the local LDS's schedule, you might be able to get the microfilm rolls in as little as a week or two. I prefer doing it this way because then I can see with my own eyes that the record either exists or doesn't exists and I don't have to rely on someone else's efforts. But I think I'm a little more controlling than most :) #2, You could also mail your request (along with a check for $10) to the Archives, not the Kanawha Co. Clerk's Office. The Archives would respond much faster than the Clerk's Office. Just ask them for a specific book and page number (send them as much information as you have on the deed). You can send 2 or 3 requests in one letter but no more than 3 for the $10 fee. I'm sure the Clerk's Office charges less, but they might take months as opposed to the Archives just taking weeks. Their fees change periodically so you'd have to call them to get the current fee. So far as getting a printout of the actual index, you can do that yourself if you rent the index on microfilm through the LDS (or if I have the index, you can tell me and I can print it out for you and mail it to you). If you write to the Archives or the Clerk's Office, be sure to specifically request a copy of the index. They will not automatically send it to you. I had posted a question similar to this a few weeks ago and I didn't get many responses. But I have learned about the Archives having deed books on microfilm, so that's helpful. But I opted to rent the deed books on microfillm. It is a whole lot cheaper than $10 a pop. Let me know if you need addresses or phone numbers for any of the places I mentioned above. I was wondering if there would be a VERY kind soul out there somewhere who would be interested in helping me understand a land deed that I just receieved in the mail. It's from 1835 and it has a lot of verbage and terminologies that I don't understand. What I'd be looking for is someone I could email this deed to (either I can scan it and email it (preferred) or I can transcribe it and email it) and then [you] could read over it and tell me what it means. I guess I'm not looking for a history lesson about dower rights or anything like that, but just a general interpretation of what the "whereas"es and "whereby"es and stuff like that means. I've read through it a couple of times and it looks like it's one long sentance and I can't seem to grasp it's meaning. I know it's a piece of property that's being sold from one person to another, but there's mention of at least 4 different people and some slaves and a dower and rights to this person and that and bad debt and creditors and a bunch of other stuff. Any takers? Hello everyone, I was writing to find out if anyone knows if the courthouse or clerks kept a list of people who were bound to another family? My great grandfather is listed as a bound boy in the 1880's census of Roane County. I have had no luck in locating any of his family and was wondering if there were any types of records kept of the bound people that I could check? Or would anyone know if one had to pay taxes on a bound person? I am grabbing at any little bit of information I can find in hopes this will lead me to my great grandfather's birth parents. Here is what I know: Oscar Milam b. about 1876 possibly in Braxton or Nicholas County, WV Eva McAvoy b. about 1876 possibly in Illinois or Iowa parents: Robert D. McAvoy & Elizabeth Jane Frame (not proven) m. 5 Nov 1896 possibly in Nicholas County, WV Their son: Joseph Milam married Ethel Walker. They were in Kanawha County by 1924. Ethel died on 20 Aug 1994. FYI -- Just found out that the National Archives has replaced the old NATF Form 80 with NATF Forms 85 & 86. Form 85 is used for requesting Military PENSION Records and Form 86 is now used for requesting Military SERVICE Records. I already need to update my website! Pat, Crescent Road runs parallel to I-64 on the west side of Charleston. Some of it was obliterated by the construction of the interstate. Cross streets include Westmoreland Dr. and Market Dr. There is no Glen Elk Co listed in the Charleston phone book. I've never heard of it. Linda

I received numerous inquiries about the obituaries at the Kanawha Public Library and how to access them. You need to request them in writing. Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Kanawha County Public Library Attn: Reference / WV Librarian 123 Capital Street Charleston, WV 25301 Their phone number is: (304) 343-4646. Their website is: http://kanawha.lib.wv.us/chas.html Their reference librarian's email address is: <[email protected]> Make checks payable to Kanawha County Public Library or KCPL. Do not request obituaries via email. They don't have the staff for that. They can only handle 5 requests or less per written letter. They do not charge research fees, but they do charge copy fees. They charge $.25 (25 cents) per copy. They will not research an obituary for you. They will ONLY look up and copy an obituary if you have an exact death date. They only have the Charleston Gazette from 1924 to date and the Charleston Daily Mail from 1914 to date. If you need other cities and years, they recommend checking with the WV Archives. On a little different note, they will do look ups for you in city directories via email. At least, she did for me. I just emailed her a name and approximate year of residence and she checked through several city directories for me. The one's that I know of are for Charleston and the years of 1898, 1899, 1903, 1906, 1907 and 1925. They probably have more, but these are the only years that fit the time criteria I was looking for. Now, if you want a copy of a page in any of the city directories, you'll have to do the same thing as mentioned above for the obituaries.
