Does anyone know what the Kanawha County Clerk's Office charges for land deeds? Has anyone actually written the clerk's office for a deed and gotten it? If so, how was the process? Thanks, -- Cara Showers Anchorage, Alaska [email protected]
Hello everyone, I am checking to see if anyone on the list is descended from WILLIAM MATTHEW RUNION b. 1895 d.? His father's name was Elijah Runion. I am hoping to make contact with someone from that line, as WILLIAM MATTHEW RUNION is my late uncle. Also, Lydia Jane Runion McCormick. Is anyone on the list descended from her? She was born in 1891 d. 1984 I believe. She lived in Clendenin. First husband was I think (William Christian) Blackwell. Any information on the two would be deeply appreciated. Thank you, Juanita
Seeking info on Rev. Jeff Thomas, b. ca. 1880. It is thought he came from Boone County to Kanawha County ca. 1908 and pastored several churches. Any info on him, his spouse (unknown), and children (unknown) would be appreciated. Caroline [email protected]
Is anyone researching Sandbridge families in Kanawha County? Pat
They supposedly have ramps at the Charleston Farmer's Market. There was an ad in the paper on Sunday. Linda
Juanita, I know that it is about this time of year when the ramps start breaking the ground in W. Va. If you can find someone in the southeastern part of W. Va. Greenbrier, Fayette, Nicholas, Pocahontas counties of W. Va. they will help you. I don't have a glue on how they are suppose to have them shipped. I know that UPS and the post office will only ship them once. I do have a brother that lives in Summers county, if I can be of help let me know. John
Hi everyone, thank you all so much for your wonderful help. I am pleased to say that some ramp has been found and ordered. It was so wonderful for all of you to respond to my search for ramp. The below site listed has taken the order and it will be on the way. I am sending the site in should any of you would like to visit and see what is in season and offered: http://www.earthy.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/pages/indexm.htm?E+delight Thanks again and God bless each of you. You have blessed this native West Virginian. I am ordering some for mama too and I know she will enjoy them. My mother Icey Larch is the daughter of James Henry Larch and Effie May Runnion. She was born June 6, 1920. If anyone has any yearbooks from 1925-1934 of the Elkview schools, would you please check and see if by chance my mother's picture is in it? I have no pictures of mama when she was a child and would love to obtain one. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks again, Juanita
Hi everyone, I hope y'all don't mind me posting, but I have an unusal request from someone who is trying to locate some Ramp for an elderly West Virginian who lives in Georgia now. The lady is 72 and is in a craving for Ramp. The elderly woman is not going to be around much longer and is hoping to get some Ramp asap. Can anyone tell me how I may go about getting the Ramp for her? Thank you, Juanita

Does anyone have access to marriage records for about 1906 in Kanawha Co. that could look this up for me? Also, is anyone researching Williamses in the Malden area from about the 1900s? Hi, I want to thank everyone who sent me information on the mental institutions around Charleston. I dont know if they will release the information to me or not, but Im going to give it a try. My problem is I have a cousin who passed away in one there in Charleston either in the late 1970"s or early 80"s we always thought he was my mothers cousin, but now I have been told that he was the illigitimate brother of my mother. Since I do not know the exact date of his death I cannot file for a death certificate.and there are no other living family memebers there to help me. I was hoping maybe to be able to get these records and get some help from them. Everyone says I will need proof of relationship and I dont have anything , I know that I did have a hard time getting records on my husbands ggrandfather from an Indiana institution. We finally got them only after paying the State of Indiana $50.00 and sending copies of my husbands drivers license and birth certificate. So if anyone has any other ideas that might help I would appreciate it. and thanks again for everyones help. Laura
This is the former "insane asylum" at Weston, WV: William R Sharpe Jr Hospital Weston, WV 26452 (304) 269-1210 I hear from someone on another list that there was supposedly another asylum at Fairmont, WV. If so, I suspect that one may have later been changed to Fairmont Emergency Hospital and then Fairmont General Hospital. There may have been other possible hospital locations. Strict laws governing the release of psychiatric records make it impossible for anyone to simply view lists of patients, regardless of how old the records are. In fact, even if you know the name of the patient and when he was there, they are not allowed to even confirm the fact he was ever there unless you can present an overwhelming reason of necessity to a Judge of the Circuit Court and get a Court Order. If these records are important to you (for family medical history), you'll have to file a Petition with the Court. I've already been through this (successfully)and will be glad to help out (privately) if you wish. I'd like to offer a few thoughts for everyone when you hear reports of an ancestor that was institutionalized in an "insane" asylum: Keep in mind how little was known in the field of psychiatry until rather recently and how fast the medical profession, especially psychiatry, is still changing. Many people were "put away" for a wide variety of reasons which may or may not have been linked to actual mental illness as we recognize it today. Many, for better or worse would not be institutionalized today. In light of today's knowledge in the field of psychiatry, a history of mental illness in a family a century ago may explain the various family members since then who may never have been declared mentally ill but have had "significant difficulties" living their lives successfully. It's unfortunate that the same laws that are meant to protect individuals and relations from the stigmas and repurcussions associated with mental illness (still present, though not as bad today) make it so difficult for descendants to have a vital part of their family medical history...especially with the knowledge that many mental illnesses can be hereditary, and many can also be successfully treated. Mental illness is not something to be hidden or ignored in shame. Far more people could be leading happier, safer, and more productive lives with their families if they and their loved ones understood why they have so many problems. A family hiding or ignoring mental illness in their family tree is like a family hiding in bed with the covers over their head as a fire rages hidden in the walls of their house. Good Luck. Am searching for 1900 Kanawha County Census records on the household of Addison JARRELL & his wife Clementine Z. (MITCHELL) JARRELL The family is listed in 1880 Census records for Kanawha County in the following manner: DO25 Addison Jarrel 23 Clementine 21 Martha F. 5 Eugene 2 The 1900 household of Addison & wife Clementine should list a son named Hughie/Huey JARRELL among its occupants. Hughie/Huey should be about 4 years old in 1900. Thank you in advance for any information. As always, I look forward to your informative E-mails & to the continued discussion of the JARRELL surname. I'm hoping to peak the interest of some Charleston historians out there. I am trying to find out more details about the Coxes in Charleston. I found, just recently, that a Gregory ancestor of mine bought a piece of property in Charleston in 1889 (I believe it was on Court & Welch Sts. but am not certain) from a company called the Charleston Extention Company ("by TR" was after the company name- don't know what that means). This peaked my interest and I did some asking around and found out that there used to be a huge Cox family farm in Charleston and the Charleston Extension Company bought a big part of the family farm and subdivided it into lots that were sold off individually and were later blocks of houses and buildings were built. Thus producing modern day, downtown Charleston. Does anyone know anything about this? I would love to find out more. I remember my grandfather telling me, when I was just a kid, that the Coxes owned alot of property in Charleston, but, now in his old age, he doesn't remember anything more. Also, we grew up on Capitol Hill in Charleston and my mother remembers that the hill used to be called "The Cox Monument" or something like that. I'm wondering what that is all about, too. Was it, perhaps, part of the Cox farm? Capitol Hill is just below the Spring Hill Cemetery, so I guess it's possible that this part of the hill was part of a tribute or memorial to the Coxes in Charleston, but I'm just guessing. help? -- Cara Showers Anchorage, Alaska [email protected]
Hi, Cara: "I had a little bird, Its name was Enza. I opened up the window And in flew Enza." (influenza) A children's rhyme that developed around the 1917-1918 influenza epidemic, just as "Ring Around the Rosey" originated with The Black Death. Funny how children can make disaster a part of every day play. Many people today don't realize the enormity of the influenza epidemic of 1918. Between 500,000-675,000 people died in the United States, and 20-40 million died worldwide. The theory is that it was so horrible, no one wanted to talk about it or remember, and so, less than 100 years later, very few people outside historians, epidemiologists, genealogists and the like know it occurred. I have a great-grandmother who is said to have died about this time and can only wonder if the flu claimed her. Like so many who died in the flu epidemic, her death was not recorded nor could her daughter (my grandmother) show me where she is buried. It is even possible that, being divorced, she remarried and started fresh, with her "death" being a convenient excuse for severing ties with her children by her first marriage who were already being raised by relatives. Best wishes, June At 09:10 AM 3/28/2001 -0900, you wrote: > I know there was a flu outbreak in 1918 that many many people died from. >My g-grandfather was one.
