    3. I am not certain if Kanawha County defines it the same way, but here is how I keep it all straight: Plat -- a picture, survey or diagram of a property or subdivision (multiple lots) based upon a deed. Survey or Deed Map Books -- a collection of certified or registered survey plats located at the county courthouse. Perhaps the Kanawha County calls this a plat book, but a plat books means something very different in the Midwest. Plat books -- commonly available in the federal land states to the Midwest and west where the township and range survey system was used. Plat books are used more for land identification and index purposes, while the deeds and certified survey maps are the official legal documents. Books typically represent a county were each page usually encompasses an entire township consisting of 36 sections (each one mile square). Books typically included unincorporated areas, not cities and villages, except for some of the earliest plat books which may include city maps. The details and features included in each plat book varies. For Wisconsin and Illinois, plat books are typically available from the late 1800's to present in 10-20 year increments. West Virginia may not have what I commonly know as plat books, since Virginia was a state-land state utilizing metes and bounds surveys. There are likely deed or survey map books at the Kanawha County courthouse which would be a compilation of certified survey plats and subdivision plats. Since each page might be a different property or plat, the collections tend to be large, often oversized, and volumous. It is quite possible that the County Clerk may be your only source for such survey maps. Also, not all properties have a registered or certified plat survey, with only the deed to go on. Hope this provides some insight. My recommendation would be to write the clerk. However, my experience in Kanawha County land records is limited and I would welcome any additions or corrections. 3. First, I'm assuming you're interesting in Charleston newspapers. I haven't had much luck finding newspapers pre-1873. The Charleston Gazette wasn't established until 1873, so you won't find an obituary with them from 1871. The Charleston Daily Mail started in the late 1800s, but I don't know of the exact year, but if you live in Charleston, you can go directly to their library in the newspaper building to search their archives. If you don't, you might be able to find some kind soul who would make the trip for you to search their archives, or at least call them and find out how far their archives go back. Their number is (304) 348-4888. The WV Archives has old newspapers, but I don't know how far back they go. You could call them at (304) 558-0230, ext. 168. Again, it's going to depend on the availability of the newspapers. I've already tried the LDS Family History Center for old newspapers and they only have newspapers on microfilm back to 1891 and that was The Daily Gazette. Good luck on your search! Let us all know what you find about newspapers dating back that far. I'm sure we could all benefit from it. -- Cara Showers Anchorage, Alaska [email protected] ---------- From: Dan Campbell <[email protected]> Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 07:10:03 -0700 (PDT) To: [email protected] Subject: Re: FW: [WVKANAWH] COPIES OF OBITS Resent-From: [email protected] Resent-Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 07:10:02 -0700 Would anyone venture a guess what my chances would be of getting a copy of an obit or death certificate from Kanawha County dating back to 1871 by contacting a library, archives or Vital registration office? --- Cara Showers <[email protected]> wrote: > You can get a copy of obituaries from the Kanawha > County Public Library. > This is an excerpt from a letter I got from them > that explains the process" > > ----------- > The obituaries (newspapers) are on film and we make > copies. 1. FW: [WVKANAWH] Kanawha County Plat Maps
    2. Cara Showers
    3. I think I should have been a little more explanitory in my hunt for the plat maps/books. First of all, to the best of my knowledge, a plat map is a map that's usually held by the local court house that has markings on it of land ownership for businesses, government, personal etc. I believe the map has specifics of property lines and special features like lakes, rivers, trees, houses, buildings etc. I might be wrong, as I've never actually seen a plat map. But this is what I've been told. The plat maps are put into a plat book and held with the county court house. Now, the plat maps I am looking for were maps from back in the late 1800s for Kanawha County. To start with, I was looking for a plat map that was mentioned in a deed of my g-g-grandfather's property deed. Here's what it says: "...the south east quarter of Lot No 28 as shown on the Plat of said land laying off the bottom into streets and lots, made out by A. P. Sinnett, and recorded in the said [Kanawha County] clerk's office, to which plat reference is here made..." The land deed was dated 16 Feb 1889. For starters, I'd like to find this particular plat map and eventually, I'll want to find other plat maps from other property that my ancestors owned from 1874 to present. I guess my question would have been better stated if I'd asked for someone to help me find a plat map from this time era. I suppose I could write to the Kanawha Co. clerk's office and ask them if they have plat maps or a plat book from 1889 that I might be able to get a copy from. But I know how notorious the Kanawha clerk's office can be for taking quite a while to fill genealogy mail requests and I was hoping that someone on this list might have tried to find such maps previously and would be able to steer me in the right direction as to exactly how to get copies of these maps. Has anyone had any experience with finding plat maps from the late 1880s? Are they only kept at clerk's office or does the WV Archives have copies on microfilm. I couldn't find them on microfilm through the LDS. -- Cara Showers Anchorage, Alaska [email protected]

    3. Seeking information on Belle McDANIEL, born about 1869 in W. Kanawha County, WV. This lady is my great grandmother. She first married a gentleman bearing the last name of Rose. She was a widow when she married my great grandfather, Robert E. Thompson, on April 2, 1892, in Fayette County, West Virginia. In the 1900 census, Robert and Belle were living on Sixth Avenue in Montgomery, WV, Kanawha County. There were three children listed in this census: Soprona, Modest, and Ernest. Belle must have passed away sometime after June 1900 and July 5, 1902, when my grandfather, listed as a widow, remarried. I have never been able to locate anything on the daughter, Soprona, either. If anyone has any information, or any suggestions where I may look to locate information on these individuals, I would be most grateful. Peggy [email protected]
