    3. Jeremiah Wells m. Martha Russell, had one son that I have info on, named Meredith. Jeremiah Wells served in the 1812 war, in the Nothwestern Division, and was honorably discharged, after which he came to Kanawha County, bought a farm and cleared the land where he lived for the rest of his life. He helped manufacture the first salt made in Kanawha County. --- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, August 05, 2001 12:53 PM Subject: [WVKANAWH] jeremiah wells VA 1792

    1. [WVKANAWH] Ideas?
    2. Hey all - I'm researching a family with a very common name (Martin) and I'm getting nowhere fast. Let me lay out my situation, and see if anyone can give me some suggestions. I know that about 1900 at least two of the Martin children had been recently born to unknown parents. Robert Raymond and Eula (Beulah? later Eula Jones). They had two other sons, I think one younger and one older, again, birthdates unknown. The family lived in Charleston, and family oral history suggests they had for quite some time and had money. I've had a person check the 1900 and 1920 census for me and they show nothing that looks likely to be this family. I don't know exact date of death on any family member. I know Robert Raymond Martin served in the navy in WW2 and was in Norfolk after being overseas, but I don't have enough to get military records. I know Eula had a duaghter who became Thelma Williams (deceased), that Robert went by 'Ray' Martin and was a dentist in Charleston dead by early 1950's - both his brothers were also dead by the fifties - one was also a dentist, the other committed suicide in dental school (again, oral history.) A google search found a possible note of Ray competing in a Charleston chess tournament - which would be very likely. So I've got nothing, basicially. Anyone got a good idea for me? Liz Montgomery

    3. Hi All, We're wondering if anyone might have access to the 1910 or 1920 West Virginia census who would be willing to do a lookup? I'm trying to help a friend find her grandparents. Her grandpa was Homer (Giles) Akers born ca 1905 in West Virginia, and her grandma was Elsie (Nutter) Akers born 2-29-1908. We aren't sure if they were born in Fayette or Kanawha County, but Elsie Akers died October, 1992 in Winona, WV, in Fayette County. If anyone would be able to check the census for either of them, we'd be forever grateful. Or, if anyone has any info on them of any kind, it'd be very, very much appreciated. Thanks bunches! Pring > Thomas, I'm a descendant of George Washington Stanley who married Fannie Young. Their homeplace was on Campbell's Creek at Tad, WV, after they moved there from near Malden (around George's Creek). Both of them are buried on the hill behind where their house was--the house burned some years ago in the 70's, I believe. Their oldest daughter, Maude Ella Stanley, was my grand aunt and lived there til she moved in with us in 1964--she died in 1965, and I helped carry her to her grave on that hillside. My mom inherited her old pie safe that had belonged to the Youngs--Fannie's family--and now my brother in St. Albans has it. I'm related to about every third house in the Kanawha Valley and on every creek that feeds it, so we oughta be able to raise somebody there who can run over to Tad for us. Fannie was the daughter of 3.1--Charles Conrad Young, b. 2 Feb 1807; d. Feb 1905, on Line Creek, Nicholas Co.; m. 28 Apr 1832 to Margaret James (b. 24 Jun 1814; d. 10 Apr 1873); 12 children . 1. [WVKANAWH] Genealogist Apprentice?
    2. In the summer before her first grade year, Katelyn Jane woke up, came downstairs & was petting our dog, a brown miniature dachshund named Wilt. As her bowl of Frosted Cheerios awaited, she looked up & asked, "Dad, who was the first Peters?" My eyes lit up! Here is a question for an amateur genealogist! Here is a question to which Dad knows the answer! I sat down beside her, looked into inquisitive brown eyes & preceded to tell her that the first known Peters in our line was her ggggg grandfather Zachariah Peters. I gave her our list of begats. I went from Zachariah to Jordan to Jonathan to Daniel to Burton to Shelby to Michael & finally to Katelyn. I felt confident in my reply. That's my final answer Regis! She thought for a moment & then clarified her earlier question, "No Dad, who was the first Peters to walk on the earth?" That, of course, was a question that Dad could not answer. But I felt good as I walked away with parting gifts. For you see my daughter's question was appropriate. As amateur genealogists, it is the direction that all of us travel. It is the elusive game for which we hunt. It is why we post. It is why we research. In the end, we are all constantly striving to find the first of our line. After yesterday morning, I believe that there may be another family historian & researcher in our house. Katelyn may just be the one that accompanies Dad to libraries, courthouses, reunions, antique shops & graveyards. She has grasped an important concept at a very early age. Life, my friends, is definitely good! Thanks for listening & as Katelyn's Great Grandmother Coleman used to say, "Ya'll come!" Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]
