Arthur or his brother, Eugene/Gene, served time in the Moundsville, WV penitentiary from about 1930 to 1941 (years are approximate)for the death of a local Marmet man (Sam Bruce). Arthur married Ina and a daughter, Betty Joe, was born. When Betty was about six, her mother died. Her father had her for a short while then she lived with her grandmother, Ella Spurlock, until Ellas' death. In short, Betty lost contact with her father, Arthur, and would like to know more about him. Also, she would like to know if she has half siblings. She thinks her father remarried and had two more children. Please note that the above info was from memory and other unverified sources and may not be entirely correct. If this family sounds similar to yours, please do not hesitate to contact me. Lorrie

    1. [WVKANAWH] Elijah Runnion
    2. Hello everyone, I want to thank each and everyone of you who answered my emails about the Elijah Runnion/Mahan connection. I really appreciate it. I have checked the archives in Charleston, I spent a whole day there myself and I have also spent alot of money on research. However, I have yet to come up with a birth date and parent for my great grandfather Elijah Runnion. Mama is 81 and she says this is what she can remember of great grandfather. 1. Elijah Runnion was a descendant of the Elijah Runnion who served in the Revolutinary War. 2. He was a bound boy for the Hiram Cummings family in the early 1880's. 3. He married Mary Catherine Moore, daughter of James Moore and Mahala Shafer. 4. Her grandfather Jacob Shafer signed the papers for Elijah and Mary to get married. They married in 1889 in Roane County. 5. They lived on Rock Creek and had 3 children, Effa May Runnion born 1890, Lydia Jane Runnion born 1891-1894, William Matthew Runnion, born 1895. 6. Mary Catherine Moore killed herself in ???? We have no date of death nor do we have her burial site. 7. Elijah married Ida Schoolcraft. 8. Mama seems to remember a woman named McClaskey??? Mama said she was German. 9. Ida is shown as deceased on grandpa's death certificate. 10. Elijah Runnion played the fiddle and continued to live in the Rock Creek area and/or Big Sandy. 11. Mama did say that Elijah Runnion lived in Elkview and that he possibly had a small farm there. My great grandfather continues to be elusive, and we have yet to find out who his parents are, and this has been the one big hinderence in our research on the Runnion family. I have raided Roane county, Jackson County and also other surrounding counties. It is my thoughts that Elijah Runnion may have lived with some kinfolks in his later years. The names I have run across my grandfather being connected with are: 1. Smith 2. Mahan's 3. Schoolcrafts 4. Cummings 5. Larch 6. McCormick 7. Blackwell 8. Snodgrass 9. Moore I am sorry this is so long, but I have about got myself believing that my great grandfather was beamed to earth from some unknown planet. :o) I am providing as much information as I can in hopes it will jog someones memory or that someone has kin who can help me. ANY and ALL information would be deeply appreciated. Thank you for the wonderful information you wonderful folks have provided so far. I am going over them with a fine tooth comb. Juanita

    1. [WVKANAWH] RUNNION/MAHAN CONNECTION
    2. Hello everyone, I am still trying to find information on my great grandfather Elijah Runnion who married 1. Mary Moore 2. Ida Schoolcraft. I am hoping someone would be able to let me know if great grandfather Runnion went by the Runnion name or some other name? Also, if by any chance anyone knows his mother's name? My brick wall has been going since 1995, but am determined to break through it eventually. I have checked the archives, Roane County, Kanawha County, for birth certificates, but great grandpa was either born in 1853 or 1858, so I have not been able to locate a birth certificate. I have his death certificate, but it does not list his parents. I have called the funeral home that did the burial, and they said the information from 1944 was destroyed. Elijah Runnion is buried in the Bub Mahan Cemetary in Roane County, and his grave is only marked with a stone. Any information would be deeply appreciated. Thank you, Juanita

    2. Hello Everyone, 1880 Census for Washington District, Lincoln County, West Virginia. Nelson Elijah MCCLURE (b. February 6, 1829) and his wife Nancy Ann HALL CLARK MCCLURE (b. abt 1834), and their children. Listed as a servant is John H. KEYS, w, m, 34, (born abt. 1846) Servant, born in Virginia. I'm wondering is there a connection between this John H. KEYS and Eliza KEYS (b. abt. 1821 in Virginia, d. December 7, 1891 in Kanawha County, West Virginia) who married Alexander C. CLARK (b.December 20, 1810 in Indian Mills, Monroe County, Virginia, d. abt. 1880 ). This Clark line is connected to the Clark families of George Rogers CLARK of "Lewis & Clark Expedition". Eliza and Alexander Clark are buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia RALPH was born Abt. 1800, and died 1828. He married ISABELLA Abt. 1820. Also, I'm wondering if maybe Ralph & Isabella Clark are the parent of Owen Bat/eman Clark? Most of the information below came from A History of Monroe County, West Virginia, by Oren F. Morton Children of RALPH CLARK and ISABELLA are: i. OWEN CLARK ii. ELIZABETH CLARK , m. NEEL . iii. JULIA CLARK iv. JOHN CLARK v. JOSEPH CLARK . vi. WILLIAM H. CLARK . vii. CLARA CLARK , m. JOHN PATTON . viii. MARGARET CLARK , m. JOHN JOHNSON . ix. THOMAS CLARK . x. ABNER CLARK . Owen seems to be a much used given name in these Clark families; Owen Alexander, Owen Batman, Owen F., Owen Foster. Thanks for any help, Pat

    3. I am trying to find some information on someone named Virginia B. F_______. I have just recently located a cemetery in what is now Roane County, but was originally part of Kanawha County. The cemetery is located outside of Uler, WV, and there is only one tombstone there in a cemetery of over 20 graves that are unmarked. The only information that was legible on the stone is as follows: [headstone] Virginia B. dau of Wm _____ 18_____[1819 or 1879?] [footstone] V. B. F. I believe this was probably a child because it lists the relationship as a daughter - not wife, or mother, etc. This stone has been nearly demolished due to equipment being driven over it. I am hoping to restore the cemetery, but do not know who might be buried here besides my gr-gr-gr grandfather, his wife, and 2 of his sons. They were Hensley's. Can anyone help? Aaron Hensley originally purchased 600 acres on a dated filed in Kanawha County for this land in 1848. Is anyone familiar with this family, or is anyone missing a Virginia B. from their records? Help! Also, does anyone know where I can get information on legalities of "grave desecration"? Is their any legal recourse regarding the preservation of these old cemeteries when they are on private land? Thank you in advance... Kelly Hensley
