Posted on: Jackson County Pensions Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/JacksonPens/23 Surname: Shinn, Poling, Riley ------------------------- State of West Virginia County of Jackson to wit In the matter of Mothers Pension Claim No. of Arely Shinn on this 27th day of January 1883 personally appeared before me a Clerk Circuit Court in and for the County and State aforesaid Captain Newton Poling aged 51 years, who being by me duly sworn says "that he was Captain of Company K of the 11th Regt. of West Va Vol Infantry. That Nathan C. Shinn, the son of said Claimant was member of said Company. That on or about the 19th September in the year 1864, the said Nathan C. Shinn, while in the line of his duty, at the battle of Winchester, Virginia, was shot and instantly killed. That affiant was near by when the ball struck said Shinn, and saw him after he was dead. That said Nathan C. Shinn was an unmarried man. That said Nathan C. Shinn was saving his money and was in the habit of sending it home, but for what purpose affiant does not know." That he is not interested in this claim for pension, and that his Post Office address is Jackson Court House County of Jackson State of West Virginia, Newton Poling (signature) Subscribed and sworn before me this 27th day of January 1883, and I certify that the contents of the foregoing affidavit was fully made, known and explained to affiant and that I have no interest in said claim, and that affiant is reputable and entitled to credit.
