Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson/1737 Surname: Welch ------------------------- Occurrance of Welch name in Jackson Co, WV. On the Bios (Biography) portion of this site, the following entry in the Bio of Isaac Bibbee occurs. I tried the search function with this site & it didn't find this: Bibbee's Mother-in-law was named Welch & her daughter (Bibbee's wife) was born in Irland. Unclear from this entry as to whether the mother-in-law emigrated. This is a biography in the Hardesty Atlas supplement for Jackson County (published in 1883): Isaac BIBBEE - deceased- was born in Union district, Jackson county, October 25, 1811, and here died after an honorable and busy life as a farmer. William and Deborah (Hughes) Bibbee, long since deceased, were his parents, and his wife was Jeanette, daughter of Brice and Jeanette (Welch) Mars, who are now deceased. She was born in Scotland, December 8, 1819, and died upon the homestead farm in Union district, May 29, 1868. .... A dip into the census records shows two households of Welch people on Elk Fork (a tributary of Mill Creek which drains into the Ohio River)in 1860: (1) Alexander P. Welch, Age 30, and wife, Mary C. Thomas, age 22. (2) John Welch, age 64, and wife, Elizabeth (age 59). Children: Mary (age 18), Eugenia (age 16), and Minerva (age 13). All are indicated as born in Virginia (which could mean WV) except Mary C. Thomas who is listed for Rockbridge Co. VA. So there were Welch people here. I don't think I am related to this family. I index obituaries for the Jackson Co. library. You probably need to visit the library in Ripley which has an important collection of transcriptions of Public documents of this and surrounding counties. You could write to the library also.
