Actually I live 30 minutes from the Hayes Museum in Fremont, and I beg to differ with you on his never being a General. Though he was never formally commissioned a Colonel until October 24, 1862, commanding the 1st brigade under Crook, Hayes WAS promoted to brigadier General as of October 19, 1864, and held that rank until the close of the war, and later was breveted Major General. I believe what you may be referring to is Hayes never commanded troops in battle as a General, which is also a true statement. After Cedar Creek, the Army of West Virginia was formed into the Independent Division (Turner), 24th Corps (Gibbon), and the Army of the James (Ord), over the overall command of General Grant's operations in the east. I am a past Historian of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, James A. Garfield's Camp #142 in Cleveland (Mentor) Ohio. I am now involved with Paul Huff's Camp in Cuyahoga Heights, Ohio. And yes, I can come and speak on the 11th. I am also a site administrator for the 11th WV on the web, under my good friend Steve Cunningham.
