Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson/1703 Surname: ------------------------- Dear Sir, I saw your Jackson County query regarding a man in the 11th WV Infantry. First of all, do you live anywhere near Jackson Co, WV? If you do, my Sons of Union Veterans camp would love to have you speak on the 11th. Many Meigs County Ohio boys fought in W.Va. units as the Ohio units were full. Also, I think you may be wrong about Rutherford B. Hayes being a Union general. He was a much lower commissioned officer in the 23th Ohio Volunteers. I know he was in this capacity when he fought in July, 1863, at the Battle of Buffington Island. You could contact the Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, Ohio, to verify this. As a fellow Civil War enthusiast, let me also invite you to join the Sons of Union VEterans of the Civil War, which was formed in 1881 as a male auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), the largest Union veterans' organization after the Civil War. With the help of WWII general, Douglas McArthur, the S.U.V. is Congressionally chartered. You can join on a direct Union ancestor or a blood-related uncle who fought for the Union. I am currently working to form a new camp in Spencer, Roane Co., WV. My camp is in Middleport, Ohio, right on the OHio River across from Mason County, WV. Keith Ashley
