Mt. Flower Cemetery. Recorded by Juanita Burdette for the Mason County Cemetery Books. My what would we have done without Juanita and her volunteers who preserved so much of our local history. The cemetery is Situated at the site of the old Mt. Flower School on Chestnut Ridge. You may sort this through and decide if any of these people belong to your line. Sept. 18, 1889 age 8 yrs. 1 mo. 5 days, dau of S. & A. A neighbor who lived near by noted that there were Riffle family graves at the rear fence; no monuments; 3 small infants, & Bill Riffle, children of Norman and Cora Riffle Shees, Mr. Shields, Virginia; William; George W; Cora; Bertha; Pete Shirley, Ella (mother); Virgie (dau) infant son Stover, Ethel Mae d. Apr. 10, 1927 (dau Thomas Synder & Edna Gerlach, aged 1 yr. 1 mo. 19 da) Shield, George, Nov. 5, 1883 aged 71 yrs (son Wm. & Ellen) Mason County Records show the following: Suiter, Margaret 1858-1928 (dau of S & M. Shields - may be A Shields Thornton, Roy Norman 1902-1927 (Norman & Della (Shields) Thornton Shields, Peter E. 1870-1925 (Salathiel & Amanda Shields) Shields, Sheridan d. 1917 age 15 yrs. (James and Rachel were the parents of Elizabeth, Hannah, Lewis, Sarah, and James) Shields, Hannah d. May 18, 1878 age 35 yrs. 1 mo. nerver married, dau James and Rachel, d. Union Dist. (could have bee buried inthe Smith Cemetery on Ten Mile Creek. Also from the MC Cemetery Book: Chestnut and Shirley Road Cemetery Off Rt. 2, Shirley road once would lead into Letart, closed off part way. Mr. Shirley says an old cemetery under large pine tree was fenced some 50 years ago and had unknown woman and child. An old house stood until "10 years ago" onBartrum farm now owned by Mr. Jordan. Never monuments. Mr. Thornton als remembers there were 4 graves, and were tenants. Mrs. Clyd Gerlach also remembers the cemetery location. Mr. Shinn and others.
