I have found my grandfathers parents but none of his family history and I am having a slight problem with his wife. William Henry Horner married Ella Neff 10/28/1883 On my grandfathers birth records, and his brother and sister the mothers name is Alice. My question is: Would Alice and Ella be the same person: such as Alice Ella Neff or Ella Alice Neff? I cannot find any records on her at all, other than her birth county was Jackson County, West Virginia and that was in Jackson County Marriages (1880-1900). Can someone put me in the right direction? Connie, On the 1880 Jackson county census, published and annotated by the JCHS, the only Neff is listed in the Ravenswood district, # 372-374: Neff, John A, 39, cooper, Ohio (Indiana Battery - Union - Civil War) Palmyra, 36, wife, Meigs Co OH (Wheaton, d/o James & Mary Wheaton, m John A, s/o Henry & Margaret Neff, 12/21/1863, John A, born Meigs Co, OH) [the JCMRs show this fact also] William, 15, son, cooper, Meigs Co, O Alice, 12, dau, Meigs Co, OH Charles W, 10, son, Jackson Co Alfred, 8, son, Meigs Co, O Clinton, 6, son, Meigs Co, O Elizabeth, 8/12, dau, Jackson Co However the 1870 Jackson Co census, published and annotated by the JCHS shows in Grant Dist: #20-20 Neff, John, 30, farmer, -125, Ohio Palmyra, 25, Ohio William, 6, Ohio Alice, 3, Jackson Co Woods, Lucinda, 14,, Jackson Co In 1870, there is only one other Neff listed, a Jacob, age 44, b Ohio and his family. I'd say you have two options. Since Alice seems to be about the right age to have been the Ella, age 17 who was married in 1883, and she has no sister, Ella, listed in either census, you can "assume" she is Ella Alice, especially if you are sure William Henry Horner is the right man --- or you can look in Meigs Co to see if there is a better match. However, I don't find a girl of the right age in the 1870 Meigs Co census to be her. 1860 Meigs Co census shows John and family and Palmyra and her family are on the 1860 Jackson Co census - would you like that info?
