He was born on October 27, 1937, in Hamlin, WV, son of the late Harry Austin and Lena Mae Jimison Smith. Bennie was a Crane Operator at Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. in Ravenswood. He was a member of the Ravenswood Freewill Baptist Church, where he loved to attend. He was a song leader for over 23 years, a Sunday School Teacher and active in the men's fellowship. He was also a carpenter. Surviving is his loving wife of 45 years, Phyllis Bridgeman Smith, Ravenswood; children, Susan Lynn Skeens and husband Paster Chris Skeens, Ravenswood; and Jennie Lou Smith, home; grandchildren, Michal Skeens and Hannah Skeens, Ravenswood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters. Services were held on Monday, February 21, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood, with Reverend Chris Skeens, Reverend Stanley Skeens, and Reverend Anton Hager officiating. Burial followed in Jackson County Memory Gardens, Cottageville, WV. Friends visited the funeral home on Sunday, February 20, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ravenswood Freewill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 812, Ravenswood, WV.
