In checking the 1840 jackson county census for John Armstrong MD, he appears to have been married before Mazilla Cozart. here's the information from that census; He's listed as Doctor John Armstrong aged 40 but less than 50 a male child in the household is 10 but less than 15 (too old to be Mazilla's) Mazilla is listed as 20 but less than 30 a female child is also ennumerated as 10 but less than 15. This isn't firm proof because the children may be adopted etc. but ... Several of us have been trying to find Levi Cozart's origins but haven't had success yet. I believe John Armstrong, M.D. to be the father of Alexis Leroy Armstrong, who married Mary Jane Riley in Davidson Co, TN, Feb 13, 1850. Census records show that Leroy Armstrong was born about 1830 in Virginia. If that record was accurate, he was not a child of Mazella Cosart, unless he was born five years before they married. Also, a family member has an undated obituary that shows Leroy Armstrong died at the age of 54. That would make the year of his death about 1884, but he and Mary Jane Riley Armstrong were both dead on the 1880 census, because their younger children are in the household of the oldest sister, Mary Childress in Davidson Co, TN. > >Would you have any information that shows John Armstrong, a physician in Jackson Co, VA, b. 1796, in England, was married before he married Mazella Cosart? > >I obtained the first name (Alexis) of Leroy Armstrong from a descendant.
