    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: bettyb23 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.jackson/6589/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I finally finished transcribing (retyping) John House's "Pioneers of Roane County, WV". The book is full of his descriptions of the land in the 'olden days' and as he follows the 'cricks' and ridges, he tells about the people who settled there. There is a huge amount of genealogical information in the book, as well as a lot of fun reading. You can read it all at www.wvpioneers.com under 'Resources', click on Books about WV & VA . . . and it's the second one on the list. I've separated it into sections, so it will load faster, but maybe more importantly, so you can see at a glance if there is one of your names there. However, it is not indexed, and there are mentions of many other families in each sketch. The section on Signs, Superstitions and Witchcraft is a hoot - a definite 'must read'! Enjoy! 2. I posted this once and it was returned so I will try again. Were any of your Slaughters married to Anna / Ann Arah Cox? I have seen it spelled both ways Slater and Slaughter but I think there is only one husband involved. I just do not know the correct spelling. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: gladioller1960 Surnames: Slaughter, Jesse Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.jackson/1348.1359.1452.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Bette, I first saw the info regarding Jesse Slaughter's parents as Moses and Nancy Slaughter, I believe, on a Brake family website. Which of course, I began looking for proof. You can't use heresay on genealogy, though it would be nice to believe all the stories you hear about "my grandmother was an indian princess". I have found Jesse Slaughter, born in 1763, in Virginia, died in Mercer County Kentucky in 1824, his will lists a son named Jesse. Jesse Sr. is on the 1800 Kentucky Tax list, 1810 and 1820 Kentucky Census. Then there is a Jesse Slaughter, born in 1763, in Virginia, married Mary Polly Rollins. They are in the Census records as I'm sure you know, for 1830, 1840 and 1850, with taxes paid in 1805 Randolph County (at 4cents an acre, wish mine was that low). Jesse and Mary have a son named John Slaughter who lives in Buckhannon, West Virginia. His daughter Elizabeth Slaughter, born abt 1835, had William Granville Jefferson Slaughter on Sept. 10, 1855, I have a picture! of him as a young man, he is my great-great-grandfather. He was born, according to the records son/of unknown and Elizabeth Slaughter. She had three children, I don't know what happened to W. Scott, but Nancy O. died in 1661, a year after her mother died of consumption, on Nov. 9, 1860. After that there is no question, I am the grand-daughter of Helen Lucille Slaughter, born Dec. 7, 1908 in Buckhannon, West Virginia, to Henry Slaughter and Eva Bell. My problem is Jesse. Is Jesse Slaughter of Mercer, Kentucky, the father of Jesse Slaughter of Randolph? Or is he the son of one of the Slaughter's who stayed in Virginia. Jesse Slaughter in Kentucky, was the son of Robert Slaughter and Mary Smith, first of Culpeper Va. Robert received 1000 acres of land for Revolutionary Service and moved to Kentucky County Virgina. I can't believe how big Virginia was in the 1780's. Are you a descendent of Abraham? You can email me at gladioller1960@yahoo.com. I do not know whom this particular email posting was directed to or who posted the original information stating that Jesse SLAUGHTER's parents were Moses & Nancy SLAUGHTER (SLAWTER). I have no knowledge on this point. I do know that Moses SLAUGHTER married Nancy nee PARSONS (born ca. 1775) on 5 October 1796 in Randolph Co., VA I have an interest in the SLAUGHTER family specifically the above Moses & Nancy SLAUGHTER; the parents of Abraham SLAUGHTER born 5 January 1797 VA. This Abraham SLAUGHTER m. Delilah (nee BIBBEE b. ca. 1811) on 12 March 1832 in Jackson County. Contrary to the information mentioned in the posting below, I believe the Jesse SLAUGHTER (b. ca. 1763 per Jackson Co. Pioneer's website database) who married Mary "Polly" ROLLINS (b. ca. 1773) to have been of the same generation as Moses SLAUGHTER, perhaps Moses's brother or cousin, rather than Moses SLAUGHTER'S son. I look forward to any discussion along these lines. Bette Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
