Author: k_courts Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.jackson/6613.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Fletch, Thank you so much for answering my emails, and assisting me. I went to world connect at roots web and found more information, I am like you, I can't stop doing this genealogy thing and I am ignoring my work to do it. It is so much fun on the computer. I do have a sizeable amount of information on the older Fitzhughs, check out this great book, William Fitzhugh and his Chespeake World, the Fitzhugh genealogy is all there, and I made several copies of pages that pertained to my side. I special ordered the book from my local library and check out at the library the book, in fact I am thinking about reordering the book, William Fitzhugh and his Chespeake World again, and copying the whole book! Truthfully, I was doing genealogy on the Kemp side and though that I might get a good lead on the Fitzhugh side, and I am always open to new informatin as you can never have enough, maybe one day I should compile it all together in a book. Seriously, I do write genealogy books, and i have written three, self published two, and wrote three unpublished novels, but my problem I like to play on the computer and this genealogy thing has hooked me, and I put off doing my work and do genealogy, it is so much fun you never know what you will find. LIke a box of chocolates, never know what you will find. I will go to yahoo.com and see what is running up there. Last night until two am I was at world connect looking up my Kemp's, Thank you so very much. I found that my great great grandmother, Sarah Letticia Kemp, had two brothers that I did not know about, Thomas B. Kemp and Daniel L. Kemp, and both fought in the Civil War. I have a strong hunch that they may have been killed as I remember my grandmother saying that the reason she did not like President Lincoln was because he made all her people in Virginia and WEst Virginia go to war and they lost everything. There were hard feelings there. Then two summers ago when I was doing research for a federal judge in Washington D.C., I went to the Ford Theather and the house across the street, and on the staris looking out over the back garden, I said to the lady with me, "I never liked President Lincoln," and she was taking a picture of the back garden and when we developed the picture, there was a very large bright light, a! nd she said "YOu must have woken up his spirit" Thank you very very much and have a great day, and a Happy Fourth of July, =kitty cat Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You'll find ( down under WORLD CONNECT ) 37 listings, most of which are your Abraham. These folks seem to be heavily connected with Wood co. Abraham is listed as buried in IOOF cem. in Parkersburg. His grandson Wm. is buried in Mt. Olivet same town. Abraham's Mom was Hannah Neal. I'm pretty sure her Dad was about the first guy in Parkersburg ( Fort Neal, Neal's Station, Neal Island ). Several of the Rootsweb listings have pegigrees to click on for the Dads and Moms which go back to 1600's Europe. There's a lot of stuff here to keep you busy. I found just a small Jackson Co. connection with William being born in Ravenswood then next kid born back in Wood Co. Good luck, yell if you hit a snag. Author: ploverrover Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.jackson/6613.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: George Fitzhugh was the grandson of Ann Ashton , niece of George Washington. The President willed great lands in and around Ravenswood to his nieces and maybe a nephew. The Fitzhughs laid out the town of Ravenswood and many of the original bear their names: Ann, Henry, Henrietta, Ashton. Their original house is still standing at the corner of Walnut and Race streets in R'wood, southwest corner. There's an old photo of it in the Ravenswood section of the internet. I'll have to find it again and get back to you. But, in the meantime please go to the Jackson co. wv gen page where you posted and go down to Jackson co. Pioneer Project. Two subsites on it to get a lot from. See SURNAMES for a whole lot of Fitzhugh info, also check out JOHN HOUSE'S section about the early Fitzhughs. The book Washington's Woods describes how this family sided with the Confederacy and therefore was a great rift between the prominent families in town. I believe there were marriages with the! Barr's and Flemings, with Flemings still in the area today. I believe you may find some related obits on the same gen page. Old museum just south of town should have info too. The original part of the old house was constructed out of 18-20 inch chestnut logs. As a kid I helped my Dad do some work in that house and I remember Dad getting quite consternated when we had to get ever-longer drill bits to put either a pipe or a wire through the side. Another little story regarding this house: when the railroad grade was put through town between this house and the nearby Ohio River, a tunnel was uncovered which led from the house to the river. Purpose???? Don't know that one. There's a little mention of the Ashtons on a document displayed on the wall of one of the buildings at Mount Vernon. Did you have an inkling of the Washington connection? Regards, Fletch Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: ploverrover Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.jackson/6609.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Ms. Grace, I may have found some info on the Rucker line. As I was drawing a blank on Sam, I went after his Dad, Joel. Two good prospects: Joel 1767-1833 born Orange Co. VA, to John 1736-1799 and Mary Burton Rucker 1740-1823. Other Joel 1766-? born Madison Co. VA to William 1740-1819 and Elizabeth Smith Rucker. Pretty sure these two Joels were cousins as their Dads were both sons of Thomas Rucker 1683-1763 and Elizabeth Reynolds Rucker. Tom's parents were Peter Rucker 1660's - 1740's ( varies on 2 different trees) and Elizabeth FIELDING Rucker. Sam had a brother Fielding per your notes. As you know this Fielding name may be a stretch but it was the custom in naming. Other first names seem to repeat in this line. I'm surmising that the first Joel mentioned above is the Dad of Sam. I came to this point after looking at a lot of stuff by punching "Joel Rucker" into YAHOO and studying items numbered 67, 79, 64, 53, and 54 ( most useful ones listed by rank ). Also s! ee LATTER DAY SAINTS FAMILY SEARCH using Joel Rucker died 1833 in Virginia , use the 2nd guy in the short list that comes up. See his pedigree. I'm not giving up now, mind you, I'm still gonna work . Just wanted to get something to you so you wouldn't think I was dumber than a mud fence. Ever use that one in Cottageville?
