Dewees was Ronald Glenver Dewees born 16 Apr 1918 in Kenna, Jackson County, West Virginia. He married Icie Pearl Landis in 1939. His children were: Colleen Brown Bell Dewees b. 04 Oct 1940 Ronald Carroll Dewees b. 15 Mar 1942 Emily Sue Taylor Dewees b. 31 Jul 1944 Glenver Gerald Dewees b. 14 Jun 1957 Ronald Glenver Dewees was the son of William Jabel Dewees (15 Aug 1875-09 Nov 1969) and Polina Dovie Redman (15 Aug 1889-23 Jul 1968). William and Polina had 12 children. Polina was the daughter of Jacob Redman and Martha (?). William Jabel Dewees (Jr.) was the son of William Jabel Dewees (31 Mar 1837-20 Aug 1923) and Ruth A. Parsons (21 Nov 1839-13 Nov 1919). Both were born and died in Jackson County, WV. William and Ruth had 9 children. William Jabel Dewees Sr. was a veteran in Company K, 11th West Virginia Infantry (Union Regiment) with his brother Joshua Kessel Dewees and 1st cousins Benjamin C. Dewees, Alfred E.S. Dewees, and Henry Spencer Dewees (children of Samuel Dewees and Edith Battin), and his 1st cousin once removed Moses Parsons Jr. who died 24 Apr 1864. Now Moses is an interesting person in that he was William J. Dewees' 1st cousin once removed AND his uncle in another way. (the double connection) William J. Dewees Sr. was the son of Ruth Parsons whose brother was this very same Moses Parsons. Ruth was the daughter of Moses Parsons Sr. and Mary "Polly" Dewees who was the sister of Benjamin, Alfred, and Henry (mentioned above as veterans in Company K with William J.). Mary was the daughter then, to Samuel Dewees and Edith Battin!! Again there is another twist to this. William Jabel Dewees Sr. was the son of William Dewees (1789-16 Jul 1859) and Rachel Battin (02 Jun 1791-17 Nov 1864). William was the brother of Samuel Dewees (who married Edith Battin - see above) and Rachel Battin was the sister of Edith Battin!!! confused yet?? Simply put, you are related to both William Dewees and Rachel Battin AND you are related to Samuel Dewees and Edith Battin through their daughter Mary, mother of Ruth Parsons who married William Jabel Dewees (the son of William Dewees and Rachel Battin). Now, let's get back to William Jabel, the veteran of the civil war. He fought in many battles in the Shenandoah and was wounded in action at the battle of Fisher's Hill on 22 Sep 1864 from a cannon blast that also wounded his cousin Henry Spencer Dewees. They both recovered and rejoined their brothers and cousins and were present at Appomattox C.H. where they fought one of the last battles with Lee confronting Lee's Army from any escape after a forced march after their victories at Petersburg. As General Ord related to General Grant, "put these West Virginians on flat ground and they can outmarch any army". Ord had the Army of West Virginia, now called the Independent Division of the XXIV Corps, in the lead to catch Lee before he could escape into Lynchburg and further south. As mentioned earlier, William Jabel Dewees Sr. was the son of William Dewees and Rachel Battin. Both William his brother Samuel were sons of John Dewees, born 1749 in Mispillion, Kent County, Delaware & died Apr 1814 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania and Mary Updegrove, born Abt. 1753 in Mispillion, Kent County, Delaware, & died 05 Nov 1818 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. They had 8 children mentioned in my earlier post, but sons Joshua, Samuel, William, and Isaac Updegrove Dewees moved into Western Virginia. Joshua to Mason County, Samuel and William to Jackson County, and Isaac into Gilmer County. Isaac's sons fought for the confederacy. John Dewees was a veteran of the Revoultionary war fighting for Colonel Haselet's 1st Delaware Regiment. They were at Valley Forge and the land at Valley Forge was owned by William Dewees (1739-1809) who was also a Lt. Col. in the Revolutionary War. This William Dewees was the grandson of William Dewees the brother of Lewis Dewees (the direct descendant of our Samuel and William Dewees who married the Battin sisters). John Dewees who married Mary Updegrove and the father of Samuel and William, was the son of: Samuel Dewees (1719-1753) and Mary (?) (5 children) Samuel was the son of: Lewis Dewees (1670-1743) and Mary Wheeler (1685-after 1724) they had 6 children. Lewis was the son of: Gerret Hendricks Dewees born Abt. 1640 in Leeuarden, Freisland, Netherlands and died 1701 in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gerret's wife was Syjtia Lewes born 1649 in the Netherlands and died Aft. 1701 in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gerret and Syjtia were married 28 Sep 1662 in Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Netherlands. They had at least 9 children. They emigrated to America (United States) about 1662/63. Lived in what is now New York City between 1663 and 1690. They moved to Germantown afterwards. Gerret was the son of: Hendrick Adriaensz de Wees born 06 Dec 1615 in Beverwijk, Noord Holland, The Netherlands and died Oct 1662 in the East Indies, he being a Dutch seaman. He was married to Adriaentje Jans on 22 Apr 1640 in Leiden, Netherlands. She was born Abt. 1619 in Alphen aan den Rijn, Netherlands and died Aft. 1661 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. They had at least 4 children. Hendrick was the son of: Adriaen Heyndricks de Wees born circa 1595 in Beverwijk, Noord Holland, The Netherlands and died 04 Apr 1674 in Amsterdam, Noord Holland, The Netherlands. He was married to Hillegond Goeverts born in Beverwijk, Noord Holland, The Netherlands and died Jan 1656 Amsterdam, Noord Holland, The Netherlands. They were married on 28 Mar 1615 in Amsterdam, Noord Holland, The Netherlands. They had 4 children. Adriaen Heyndricks de Wees was a bookseller and art broker who brokered and was friends of Rembrandt. I have a wealth of information with over 20.000 names on my database, and obviously have the names of children, wives parents, dates etc., I hope this gets you started. All of this work is in the Philadelphia Historical Society and is documented. I was the researcher of the Dewees' in West Virginia. Some of it varies a bit depending on who researched and entered it into the system. Please go to the free site ROOTSWEB. Punch in "Charity Coon" without an s on the end. After hitting "search" scroll down to "world connect". There have 80 listings over 4 pages of ladies by that name . Most of them are your Charity. The best stuff is on page 3 of the 4 pages. Henry's name is with hers so you just have to click on him to learn a lot. Henry was born in 1762 in Hesse, Germany and died 1827 in Berlin, Lewis Co. wv. He married Charity Sep 25 1794 in Harrison Co. One source says he was a Hessian soldier hired by King George to fight the colonists in the Rev war and he chose to come over to the Americans and another source says he fought for us all along. Charity was born in 1768 or 1760 and died in 1872 in Roane co. Buried in Pleasant Valley Cem. on Lick Fork near a little place called Zona near Harmony. She was living with ! her daughter named Charity and her husband Stephen Starcher. She was well over 100 when she died. She was born either in Philadelphia or on the Isle of Jersey in the English Channel. The ROOTSWEB site also lists the parents and names their 12 kids. Charity's Dad was listed as having died at Coon's Fort in Marion Co. The site also details some books and magazine articles which deal with both families' history. This was a very interesting search. If you get tangled up with ROOTSWEB yell and we'll figure out a way to get you the stuff. The good stuff on page 3 is about in the middle of the page. As a kid I went all over the county working with my Dad who fixed appliances and did all kinds of repairs. We probably were in everyone's home at one time or another. I've always loved history and old people . I listened to any old tales as best I could and now work genealogy thanks to those people who entered everything for us. I just have a lot of relatives and contacts back there and all those people know a whole lot of others so one call leads to another and before ya know it a contact has been made. I do not have any people in this cemetery but I have them all over most of the other cemeteries. I have a cousin married to a Randy Randolph who is probably in his mid 50's but I haven't seen Diana for at least 30 years. Are you a native of the area? On of her sons, in a US census, states that she was born in Ireland. All other accounts place her birth in PA. Some online genealogy records say her name was Elizabeth Lemon.
