For those of you who have read a version of this posting in the past, please forgive the redundancy. I have just subscribed to the PA rootsweb list in the hope of finding my BARNHARTS in PA. So this query is new to those on that list. I have slightly amended my last posting to the other lists hoping that it may help someone assist me in tearing down the genealogical brick wall re: the parentage/ancestry of James BARNHART. According to the 1870 Census for Jackson County, VA/WVa., James BARNHART is a 41 year old farmer from PA. That would make his DOB as circa 1829. Living with him in the 1870 Jackson County Census is his wife Ann. According to Jackson County marriage records, James BARNHART married Ann "ROSOLY" on 4 April 1850. Found in Jackson County death records is the following: Barnhart, James died 9/17/1902, 74y 11 months days, died Goldtown, parents H & S Barnhart (The age fits for the James BARNHART I am looking for.) Next door to James BARNHART in the 1860 Census for Jackson County, VA/WVa, is the household of Jesse Hanshaw. Living with Jesse Hanshaw & wife Elizabeth is Sarah BARNHART aged 66 & from PA. I'm wondering if this could be the mother-in-law of Jesse & the mother of Elizabeth. Maybe Elizabeth is a BARNHART & sister to my James BARNHART. The parents listed for James BARNHART in his death record are H & S BARNHART. My theory is that Sarah could be the "S" of H & S BARNHART. The 1870 & 1880 Censuses for Jackson County lists among the children of James BARNHART & Anna "Rosoly" BARNHART, a son named Harmon born circa 1862 in Jackson County. Maybe Harmon was named for his grandfather. Maybe the "H" of H & S BARNHART is Harman. Does anyone have a marriage of a Harman Barnhart to an "S" _____ -- possibly a Sarah? I wouldn't think that Harmon was that common of a name, but in genealogy I have come to know that you never take anything for granted & that you never assume anything. Thank you in advance for any information, guidance or suggestions. I look forward to reading your replies. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com

Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson/1676 Surname: Hunt, Hammond ------------------------- I see that you have the Hunt and Hammond in your family surname list. Is there any chance that they are from Berkshire Co,MA. My gr grandparents were Lyman Alden Hunt born 9/28/1845 in Chester, MA and Laura Lavina Hammond born 5/7/1846 in Cheshire,MA. Lyman's father was Silas A. Hunt and Mary A Harrington. Silas' parents were John Hunt and Mary Dunton. I have not been able to get much info on John or Mary and further back in connections. Or the siblings of any of the three grandfathers. Does any of this information look familiar to you. Any help would be appreciated.

Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson?read=1674 Surname: PARSONS ------------------------- Well, if you need to have this information, I will gather all of my sources together. I am a Historian for the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and I have many documents concerning the "bushwhacker" named "Devil Bill" Parsons Gilmer/Calhoun County area. He was widely known in central (West) Virginia, unfortunately as a ruthless Yankee hater, and was accused of crimes and murders against unionists and Federal Soldiers. I will be glad to cite the documents I have on this matter. I do hope he isn't the same person you refer to. As for the Parsons matter, this data was given to me by several sources and apparently you have documentation to prove otherwise. I would like to see this, since some of mine are from Revolutionary War Pensions, family histories, etc., Parsons was not a direct line of mine but an allied family. You may email me if you would like. Thank you.
Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson?read=1673 Surname: Parsons ------------------------- Here again is another legend that needs to be corrected. William Parsons, the oldest son of Charles and Elizabeth Chestnut Parsons was never called William Lowther in any documents that I have seen. He was either William or Captain William. William Lowther Parsons was his nephew (son of Joseph Parsons). He lived in Jackson County, WV and was also known as "Devil Bill" Parsons, not because he was ever a bushwacker but because he like to play tricks on people.
Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson?read=1672 Surname: PARSONS ------------------------- Where in the world did you ever establish a "Devil Bill" Parsons as being William Lowther Parsons? William Lowther Parsons was the son of Charles Parsons and Elizabeth Chestnut, and was born July 24, 1769 in Queen Annes County, Maryland. He married Susan Fink and Elizabeth Nancy Walker. However, William Lowther Parsons died October 10, 1839, far too soon to be "Devil Bill" Parsons, the notorious "bushwhacker" during the Civil War. "Devil Bill" Parsons got his name for being feared for his actions as a bushwhacker. This is hardly the same person as Colonel William Lowther Parsons!! I hope I misread your notice, and you were trying to say other children to Joseph.
Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson?read=1671 Surname: Parsons, Bush, Mott ------------------------- The Joseph Parsons that married Elizabeth Bush on Jan. 14, 1804 was Joseph P. (Paulcer?) Parsons, son of the "red-haired" Charles Parsons. The Joseph Parsons who married Matilda "Til" Mott was much older and the son of the Charles parsons who settled in Jackson Co., WV in about 1800. Joseph and Matilda were married prior to 1783 when their son Adam was born. Other children were George, William Lowther "Devil Bill", Charles, Joseph, Jr., John L., and Nancy. There is no evidence whatsoever that this Joseph ever married and Elizabeth Bush. This is just another Jackson Co. Parsons legend.
