If there is a rule against this, it was made to be broken. How many other great books are floating around that we might like, and have no knowledge of? I think it would be a great service to have these privately published books listed on the county (and neighboring counties) rootsweb sites, along with any books the local Genealogy/Historical societies have for sale.
We have lots of info to exchange if you are our Wilman line, which has ties in the county. We are seeking the marriages/ death dates, locations, churches/cemeteries for the following lost Wilmans: Mary Willman b. ca 1832 NY Hannah Willman b. ca 1834 NJ George Wilman b. ca 1834 NY Henry Wilman b. ca 1843 Va(now WV) We can trace them until about 1872, when they probably married and moved. They were the children of Ernst Ludwig Bernhardt Wilman (also known as Louis Wilman and Louis Wilman de Manzius), a textile dyer who lived at various times in Glenham and Waterloo, N.Y.,Steubenville, Ohio, near Ripley, Va(now WV) and Philadelphia. He died at his son's in Warehouse Point, Ct in 1863 and may have worked also in Fall River, Massachusetts. We have found 1st Lt.Adolph, Bernard(our direct ancestor) and Louis C., other children. We also need the death date, location and burial site for our great great gerandmother, Eliza Parker Wilman, born about 1804/5 N.Y. last found in Philadelphia in 1886.She is probably buried near one of her children. We don't get here often, so please email to James0319@aol.com
Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson/1728 Surname: Merical, Landfried ------------------------- You're Welcome. Correction: In that obituary quote in previous response, I misspelled Landfried--the obituary has it correctly spelled. Your first response also has it misspelled. In "Names on the Land" by Delmer Hite has this entry in his book on Jackson County, WV, place names for Merical: "Merical Run and Merical Hollow, a tributary of Grasslick Creek. Named for the Merical family who settled here after 1870." The U.S. Geological Survey is rather exact in indicating the Merical run does NOT run through Merical Hollow. A search of the two names on http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html shows that they are not far from each other: Merical Run Feature Type: stream State: West Virginia County: Jackson USGS 7.5' x 7.5' Map: Kenna Latitude: 384336N Longitude: 0813909W Merical Hollow Feature Type: valley State: West Virginia County: Jackson USGS 7.5' x 7.5' Map: Kenna Latitude: 384247N Longitude: 0813815W The county map issued by the WV Department of Transportation shows Merical Run on Grasslick Creek. An unlabeled stream branches off Grasslick Creek just before an abrupt turn to flow northwest at the location given for Merical Hollow. The two locations are separated at least a mile. If you use the search function at the site above you can print out two maps showing the location on (unlabeled) Grasslick Creek (the unlabeled stream is not shown). I don't know whether the USGS map would show the label for Merical Hollow but they obviously know its there. Sandra Landfried
Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson/1727 Surname: ------------------------- My father in law re-united with his sister after 72 years apart. Unfortunally he tried the local Social Security Administration and they did not help him as stated above. Maybe someone was lazy that day. One thing I have learned when doing research,...if you don't like the answer received keep asking until you find a better one and don't forget almost everyone has a supervisor. Maybe they would have more years together if only a supervisor had been requested. He went to the local LDS and they instructed him on how to do a phone search at his nearby library. He was lucky on his first call. Good luck.

They grew up together on farms near Spencer, Iowa. I also have Good relatives in California. Kevin Good would be my age. My problem is I do not know exactly where the family connection comes in. My grandmother on my fathers side was a Watson, and his father a Seaton. It must be that one of my grandmother's brothers or sisters married a Good, I know it is not on my Grandfathers side. Can you help? I am trying to establish a geneology, but have no information on the Good side.

Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson/1717 Surname: MERICAL, KING ------------------------- My grat grand Uncle Hugh King married a Martha Merical, 9/6/1815-2/28/1910, In Monroe County, Ohio which is just across the River from West Virginia. They are buried at Scotts Ridge Metohdist Church Cemetery there. Hugh's son Nicholas married Hester Jane Merical who died in 1863. I am not sure where she is buried, but Nicholas is buried at New Smith Church Cemetery in Mason County, WV. Since Merical is not that common a surname, they is probably some connection with these Mericals and the Mericals that you all are referring to. Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson/1711 Surname: Merrical, Cunningham, Landfried ------------------------- This is Sandra Landfried at the library in Ripley, WV, Jackson County, WV responding to your question about the children of Martha Merrical: These points must be made- 1. Wrong Century: 1825 must be a typo. Landfrieds did not arrive in Jackson Co. WV until after 1840 and before 1850. 2. There are two men named Okey J. Cunningham, but times of marriage and birth of children don't overlap. Names are commingled in transcription of birth records however. I remember my aunt, Audrey Sayre laughing about the problems created by these two duplicate names. 3. Okey J. (Junior) married (Galeth) Mildred Kay, but marriage not recorded in court house transcriptions in "Jackson Co. Marriages" (by Linda Murdock). Conclude married elsewhere. CHILDREN: found John Henry (b. 8/12/1945); Joseph Lee (b. 6/14/1948); Mary Kathryn (b. 12/11/1949); Recorded in "Jackson Co, W.Va. Birth Records 1853-1950, Vol C" (also by Linda Murdock). This one is not of interest for your question except as source of confusion.. Exact enteries vary a little: for example "Galeth" recorded only once. 4. O. J.Cunningham (age 38) and Martha Merrical(age 18) married 8/4/1907 in Jackson Co. WV. Minister Thomas O. Powers. He is listed as born in Gallia Co.[Ohio] and resident in the Jackson Co in OHIO. She is listed as born and resident in Jackson Co, WV. Listed in "Jackson Co. Marriages 1901-1925 (Linda Murdock)," page 45. CHILDREN: found Mabel Cunningham, b. 8/3/1909; Hazel Cunningham, two enteries, b. 5/25/1912 and 5/26/1912 [first one listed as Hasel; someone has written in correction];Okey Cunningham, Jr., b. 11/1/1919; Mary Marie Cunningham, b. 11/27.1922. 5. Marriage record transcriptions through 1949 list only mariage for Mabel Landfried(given as age 19-I believe my aunt said she fibbed to get married) to Cleophas Landfried (age 30); listed on page 19 in "Jackson County Marriages 1926-1939" (Linda Murdock). This is his second marriage, the first to Wanda Staats, May 5, 1918 (ibid 1901-1925, page 108); later Mable Cunningham also married again; There were two children from the her first marriage, one of whom I know is still living. 6. The HAZEL Landfried you mentioned is the daughter of George McCellen Landfried and Anna Parsons. Born Nov. 21, 1903. Therefore she is not the daughter of Martha Merrical. Guy Holcomb was her second husband & he committed suicide several months later. These events occurred in Ohio but there was a news article in the Jackson Hearld which was extracted & transcribed in "Betty McIntyre's Obituary Book." Mrs. McIntyre also transcribed most of her obituaries for the Jackson Co. Web Page but I didn't check to see if this item was there since it is of no significance to Martha Merrical's children. 7. The Obituary of Okey J. Cunningham, transcribed from the Jackson Hearld (June 14, 1940), appears on page 229 of "Betty Kessel McIntyre's Obituary Book" & is probably on the Jackson Co. Web page. And it says in part: "Besides his wife, Martha Merrical Cunningham, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Nellie Hoots, of Warnock, Ohio; Mrs. Mabel Lndfried, of Ripley; Mrs. Hazel Hanning, of Fairplain, and Mary Cunningham, at home; two sons, Warren and Okey Cunningham, at home;...[one brother & 3 sisters]" I checked again and no marriage of Hazel Cunningham to a Hanning found in Jackson Co. Transcriptions. 8. Another person is researching the Merrical name-lives in Idaho or Montana; visited this summer. Did you know there is a place called Merrical Run here? Hoped this helped. For the Landfried's there is only a booklet prepared by my cousin, Guy. And Cleophas appears on several family trees in several books, usually garbled or incomplete. I expect we'll have to do something about it. I have a question how are you related to these people? Hope this helped Sandra Landfried

Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson/1707 Surname: HAYES ------------------------- Keith, I do not live near jackson County, my wife lived in Kanawha City, Kanawha County, and I travel the State often. Actually I live 30 minutes from the Hayes Museum in Fremont, and I beg to differ with you on his never being a General. Though he was never formally commissioned a Colonel until October 24, 1862, commanding the 1st brigade under Crook, Hayes WAS promoted to brigadier General as of October 19, 1864, and held that rank until the close of the war, and later was breveted Major General. I believe what you may be referring to is Hayes never commanded troops in battle as a General, which is also a true statement. After Cedar Creek, the Army of West Virginia was formed into the Independent Division (Turner), 24th Corps (Gibbon), and the Army of the James (Ord), over the overall command of General Grant's operations in the east. I am a past Historian of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, James A. Garfield's Camp #142 in Cleveland (Mentor) Ohio. I am now involved with Paul Huff's Camp in Cuyahoga Heights, Ohio. And yes, I can come and speak on the 11th. I am also a site administrator for the 11th WV on the web, under my good friend Steve Cunningham.

Dear Jackson County Friends, I'm still trying to tie up so loose ends on my WOLFE family line. According to the book "Cunningham & Crites", by Jacqueline Heywood Monday, published, 1986, there are two wives listed for George Beath Wolfe. First marriage was to Elizabeth Crites. Second marriage to Barbara Casto. I have one source that was provided me by a friend in Arizona that shows this Barbara Casto as being born in 1853. I'm not sure if this is the same Barbara Casto mentioned in the book. Under children for George Wolfe and Barbara Casto it mentions that there were only two known children. 1. Issac Cinnett Wolfe, b. 1832, d. 9 Aug 1900, Kenna, W.Va.. m. Amanda Fowler. 2. Abraham Wolfe, b. 1831, d. 12 March 1888, m. Amanda Fisher. The other information I have shows that this George Wolfe and Barbara Casto also had children 1. Susan A. Wolfe, b. 1875 2. James H. Wolfe, b. 1877 3. Dora A. Wolfe, b. 1879 My question is that if this same Barbara Casto, b. 1853, Issac Wolfe would have been born before 13 years old. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hope maybe I can sort this out with your help. P.S. I'm using Family Tree Maker v.6.0 Richard Szasz
