Infantry, you may be interested in membership in either the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War or Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic. Both of these groups were formed in the 1880's and are Congressionally chartered. Membership is open to anyone with either direct ancestry to a Union veteran or with a blood-related uncle who served the Union. One camp of Sons of Union Veterans is currently formed in Buckhannon and another is forming in Spencer now. A group of the Ladies of the G.A.R. is also forming in Spencer now. I can e-mail you more information and also send applications for membership. Keith D. Ashley 34465 Crew Road Pomeroy, OH 45769-9715

Hello Everybody: You may be interested in our new website, which is a memorial to the 13th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry. Some of the soldiers in this regiment were from Jackson Co. You can visit the site at: http://www.13wvi.com/index.htm Among lots of other things, the site includes a comprehensive history of the regiment and a soldier roster. There is also a section entitled "Soldier Information and Researchers." This is a compilation of the names and e-mail addresses of people who have contacted us with information about particular soldiers. One of the things we hope to do is to connect researchers with soldier-interests in common. We hope to keep improving the site, and adding new researcher names and soldier information to the list. If you have any information on a soldier from this regiment and would like to contribute, please e-mail me. Kim Brownlee kbrownl@pop3.utoledo.edu

Hi Dee, I will try to answer you but will also post this to WVJackso-L as the information might help several others as well. The message was posted on the GenConnect Query board on the Jackson County WVGenWeb page. It is sent to the mail list as all postings to the GenConnect boards are gatewayed to the mail list. Since the person posting the message may not be subscribed to this mail list for one reason or another, in order to insure that they receive an answer, it is necessary to reply by using the GenConnect board, thus the reason for the URL as in this one. > Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum > Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson/1879 > > Surname: Hill, Warner The Surname box is supposed to have only the surnames that are a part of the message that is posted. When other names are listed there, by GenConnect guidelines, I am to go to the page and edit them so that the proper surnames are shown. (Some times when working double shifts I might miss a few or it may take a couple of days to get them edited.) These names listed in this box are used for indexing the messages by the Surname Helper program. This is to allow for persons searching for a particular surname to enter the name on the master search page and find any and all messages that have that surname somewhere in the message. Some are not reading the instructions before posting and are listing the surnames that they are researching and not the ones in the text of that message. There then require that these be edited and corrected, or be prepared to answer the messages that are sent complaining that the message is not about the surnames that are listed. Postings and sharing of our genealogy research is what this is about. Listing the proper surnames makes maintaining the boards much easier. Dee, and anyone else who is baffled by this (and there are lots of us!), Think of these Rootsweb sites as classrooms in a school building. In one room, you have the GenForum board for Jackson County, which is where lots of specific data is posted--county war veterans' lists, cemetery inventories, some census records, and a query list. In another room, you have the WVJACKSO-L maillist, which covers discussion topics of general interest pertinent to the county. And frequently, people in one room, just never seem to find their way into the other room, to see what's happening, there. So.... Since the original query was posted by someone on that particular GenForum Board, the County Listowner, who subscribes to both, forwards queries from that board, to this list, in case there are folks here, who aren't subscribed, there. Then we won't miss what may be an important message to our research. And if you have something that may help someone who has posted to the GenForum board, you are asked to click on the URL, and go to that board, to post your reply. That way, the post-er will be certain to see your response, in case s/he isn't subscribed to this maillist. It's just a way of spreading the info around in a wider range. Clear as mud? Hope this helps! Julie, endlessly sorting out dead relatives.....

I have seen this type of message below the subject: many times and I am wondering what it means: when it says to reply here and gives a http address. I only click reply. I don't understand why I would reply to the http url below. Also I don't understand how the surname Hill, Warner relates to this message. I know that this must be of importance, but if persons don't know how to interpret it, it seems so much loss of space to wander thru. Thanks for any information. Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson/1881 Surname: Warner, Hill ------------------------- I have Ruth as the daughter of Abel Sayre, Jr. and Katherine Anderson. The 1880 Jackson County, WV census lists Abel age 47 and Katherine age 52 with three children in the home: Ezekiel age 16, Ruth age 15 and Adelda age 11. This puts Ruth's age pretty close to what I have as her date of birth of 1863.
