    3. Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson/12200 Surname: Slaughter, Stewart, Fields, Blackwell, Green ------------------------- Thank you for your response to my post. My search has been mostly Jackson and Roane Counties. The date on my granddads death certificate lists his birth as 6/20/1871, we know from census records that is wrong so the month maybe as well. A F Slaughter being married 3 times has made it hard to follow his children. I have found Silas Floyd's and Walter L's families .but am stuck on Holly P. I am also trying to find out where the children of A F and Ellen (Doolittle) went. I found that my grandmother Goldie Mabel Stewart's mother and father were William F Stewart and Mary Mollie (Blackwell) Stewart. My grandmother lived with the Blackwells (listed in the 1910 census) in Roane county after her mother died . William had married a woman by the name Mccrady? who had a daughter Lora/ . I've talked to some people in Roane county who recall the trouble my granddad caused when he ran off with his wifes (Bertha Blackwell) neice. Nobody I can remember talked of my granddad's family in Jackson county, now I know why. My granddad lived with John E F Fields and Sarah from the age of 3 or 4 years old ,when Sarah married John. Below are some things that I have gotten in my email lately ,maybe someone has more to add. Any and all help is greatly appreciated Death Certificate. Walter L. My grandmother was Minerva Jane Randolph, daughter of William Riley Randolph and Sarah Elizabeth Green. She was born 19 Aug 1879, married John Edward Casto on 26 May 1895 and died 29 Apr 1955. The "other" Minerva Jane Randolph was the daughter of Christopher Smith Randolph and Anna A Gandee. She was born 7 Jul 1877, married John D Hamon on 17 Aug 1893 and died 10 Apr 1974. Since William Riley and Christopher were brothers, the two were first cousins. I've always wondered if they caused as much confusion then as they do now.

    1. [WVJackson] Willie Graves
    2. One person I forgot to mention in my "Pearl Harbor/Memorial Day List" posting was Willie "Bill" Graves. Willie's story deserves special consideration. Willie migrated from the South in the '30s looking for work in depression era Jackson County, WV. My great grandparents, Rudy S. Coleman & Mary Myrtle Huffman Coleman, said he could stay with them. There's always work on a farm. Couldn't pay him much -- just room & board. He accepted. Said he'd sleep in the barn. My great grandmother would have none of that. He would sleep with the boys. He came to share a bed with my grandfather Obert "Obe" Coleman & they became like brothers. They worked together & "raised hell" together. Willie Graves joined the service with E. A. "Lash" Coleman, Everett Shaffer & Jerrell Clendenin, a younger brother & cousins of my grandfather "Obe" Coleman. My mother remembered seeing Willie Graves when he came home on a furlough just prior to his shipping out for the Pacific Theater. She was a mere child. According to her, Willie was one of the kindest, gentlest men she has ever met. His smile, she continued, was "infectious." He even rocked her to sleep when she was an infant. Some 60 years later she still utters his name in reverence. Such was the impact of this stranger Willie Graves. It was my mother who asked if I had included Willie on my list. So I am now fixing my mistake. Willie Graves died fighting the Japanese on the island of Guam in 1944. When my great grandmother, Mary Myrtle Huffman Coleman, heard the news, she cried as hard as any other "Gold Star Mother" would. For Willie was her son. He was not blood & he was not adopted, but in her eyes, it did not make him any less of a son. Hearing that story as a youth in the Civil unrest of the 1960s taught me something. For you see, Willie Graves was an African American and my great grandmother was color blind. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com

    1. [WVJackson] Pearl Harbor/Memorial Day List
    2. The new movie "Pearl Harbor" is scheduled for release on May 25th to coincide with Memorial Day weekend. I can't wait! It should be good. December 7th of this year will mark the 60th anniversary of the "day that will live in infamy" and our country's involvement in WW2. My grandmother Coleman said she was in the kitchen making some of her Sunday fried chicken when she was interrupted by news of the ruthless Japanese attack. She had never heard of Pearl Harbor and didn't realize at the time how her life and the lives of her family members would forever change. With WW2 came rationing and "Rosie the Riveter." There was also the horror that came to be known as the Holocaust. Four of Grandma Coleman's brothers & 3 of her brothers-in-law would see action during the war. One of those brothers-in-law would even see time in a POW camp. What started one quiet December Sunday in an Appalachian kitchen ended with "mushroom clouds" in the skies over Hiroshima & Nagasaki. At parties on VE and VJ day we celebrated the Allied victory over the Axis powers. While we danced, somewhere in the shadows lurked the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Cold War. This Memorial Day lets pay special tribute to the men & women that served in WW2 while also remembering those in our families who served in each war from the French & Indian War to the Gulf War. My list is similar to the one from last year but comes amended with many new names. Thanks to all who helped me document the new members. This Memorial Day I will remember the following people: * Jack Dempsey Peters, my father's first cousin. Jack perished in Korea. * James Peters, my uncle & my father's oldest brother. James served in WW2. * William Peters, brother of my gg grandfather Jonathan Peters. William died from head wounds suffered during "Pickett's Charge" at Gettysburg. * Jordan N. Peters, my ggg grandfather, who fought in the War of 1812. * Zachariah Peters, brother of my gg grandfather Jonathan Peters. Zach lost a leg in the Civil War. * Sanford Gadd, brother-in-law of my gg grandfather Jonathan Peters. Sanford died during the Civil War's Battle of New Market. * William Mitchell Clay, my ggggggg grandfather, who was the first casualty of the Revolutionary War. * Reuben Huffman, Frederick Lemon, Ralph Stewart, Daniel Shumate, Mitchell Clay, John Cook(e), James Ellison, Francis Farley, David Miller & George Walker, Sr., all direct ancestors, who fought for the 13 Colonies' independence in the Revolutionary War. * E. A. "Lash" Coleman, my great uncle, who fought in WW2. * Thermos Hinzman, my great uncle, who was a POW in Hitler's Nazi Germany. * James Stewart, my gggggg grandfather, who fought during the French & Indian War. * James Madison Pritt, brother to my gg grandmother Margaret Pritt. Madison served during the Civil War. * John Stuart Huffman & Charles McClung Huffman, my ggg grandfather & his brother. These men, named for Revolutionary War Vets from Greenbrier County, VA/WV, followed the military leads of their namesakes & served during the Civil War. * Jordan "Don" Peters, my great uncle & brother to my grandfather James Burton Peters. "Don" served "over there" in WW1. * Vernon, Lawrence, Jack & Guy Pritt, brothers to my maternal grandmother Mernia Pritt Coleman. They answered their country's call in WW2. * Ralph, Virgil, Cebert, Forest & Herbert Stover, brothers to my paternal grandmother Sadie Stover Peters. They also answered the call in WW2. * Teddy, Jimmy & Herbert Stover, Jr, my cousins, who fought in the jungles of Viet Nam. They are the sons of Virgil, Forest and Herbert Stover, the WW2 vets mentioned above. * Charles Walker, my great uncle, who fought in the Pacific Theater of WW2. * Everett Shaffer & Jerrell Clendenin, first cousins to my grandfather Obert "Obe" Coleman. Everett & Jerrell also fought for the Allies in WW2. * Shelby H. Peters, my father, who was a Korean War veteran & who died while on active duty 31 July 1967. Happy Memorial Day & please don't forget to remember our veterans and all active duty soldiers and sailors. Their military service was and is the insurance policy on our way of life. If you save me a seat at the movie theater, I'll bring the popcorn. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com

    3. Posted on: Jackson County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Jackson/12184 Surname: SKIDMORE, CUNNINGHAM ------------------------- I believe Isabel/Isabella Skidmore was the sister of my gg grandmother, Sarah Angelina Skidmore Reynolds. However, if she was, she changed her name or some official documents are wrong. According to some land records, Archibald Sloan Skidmore (b 1801 Botetourt Co, VA, d 1840 Jackson Co, VA) and Sarah Anderson (b 6/14/1800 Botetourt Co, d 6/18/1875 Jackson Co) had 8 children: Eleanore Ann, Martha Ann, Sarah Angelina, Elizabeth Lewis, Alexander Allen, Levina Elizabeth, and Archibald Stone. Isabell is found living with Martha in 1860, along with her 1 year old son, and their (?) mother, Sarah. I suppose she could be a cousin, but on the other hand, I have marriages for all of the other children except one of the Elizabeths. Not sure which since she is only called Elizabeth or "Bet". John House, in "Pioneers of Jackson County", says Marshall Cunningham was a boat carpenter and was drowned off a boat at Cincinnati. She died in Cincinnati a few years ago, aged 78. If you find her death record there, I'd appreciate knowing what it says! I have her as being born about 1833, so that means she would have died about 1910. House's notes don't extend much later than that.
