    1. [WVJackson] Jackson County item in Somebody's Links
    2. Amy Ryan
    3. The following message appeared in the most recent edition of Rootsweb's Somebody's Links newsletter. Hope someone is a relative of this gentleman, and isn't it nice of the poster to try to get the effects into the proper hands? I have some personal effects that belonged to my step- grandfather, Everette Lackey MILLER, who died 19 Apr 1973 in Dublin, Laurens County, Georgia at the Veterans Hospital. He was born in 1905 in Ripley, Jackson County, West Virginia. He served in World War II and was a bachelor until he married my grandmother, Henrietta FERRELL LYONS, in 1962 in Columbus, Ohio. He never had any children, but we know he had a sister Mary MATHENY and an aunt Melinda who lived in Columbus. At the death of my grandmother, we inherited his effects and would like to see them in the hands of his family. 1. [WVJackson] NEAL Plantation
    2. Hello. I'm asking again (once/year) about anyone knowing about the NEAL Plantation in Jackson Co., that I think straddled the Kanawha/Jackson Co. boarder near the southern tip of Jackson. It was purchased in 1842 by Thomas HUFFMAN and his Son John Stuart. The Property was four acres and most was sold to a Mr. BURGESS in 1852/53 in Jackson after a transfer document was signed by all of the deceased Thomas' Children, giving all the land to Margaret, Thomas' Wife. A Mr. Middleton was mentioned in the land transfer document, who we feel was a land speculator that was involved with the land in some fashion (perhaps paying LT on the property since Thomas and John Stuart didn't in either Jackson or Kanawha from 1842 - 1852. We cannot find a deed for the property under the HUFFMAN's names and that might be because of the land tax situation, or the deed not be recorded. Thank you for any info. With regards, Tim Spradling, GGG Grandchild of Thomas & Margaret Lemon HUFFMAN.

    1. [WVJackson] Betty's Jackson Co. Site
    2. Five Stars ***** to your site Betty. What a lot of hard work, and thanks for shareing it with everyone. I am also a Mason, Jackson, Galia, Meigs Co. researcher, which has 1/2 as many people in my database, and you are correct, once the web starts, it just keeps growing. If one does not have a Casto, Greenlee, Sayre in there ancestors, I would really be suprised. GREAT JOB!!! Bev Craig, northeast Ohio researching: Riffle, Craig and associated families

    1. [WVJackson] New web site
    2. Betty Briggs
    3. Hi fellow researchers. I've just created a website to house my Jackson County Pioneer Project. I am attempting to connect as many of the early families as possible. So far, everyone in my database is connected - I think. There's 14,000+ people there. They are not limited to people who lived in Jackson county or even WV. My husband's family is there, but he has links in WV, even though his direct ancestors were stupid enough to settle on the wrong side of the River. :) (I can say that since I [blush] was also born on the wrong side, in Ohio.) Please check it out http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bbriggs/index.htm I've posted a "corrected" 1850 census of Jackson county - "corrected" because when I transcribed it for the USGenWeb Census Project last year, I had to retain the spelling, errors and all. Since then, several people have written to tell me of errors, and I hope I have made all of those corrections, as well as a bunch that I knew of when I was doing it. If you find more, please let me know! I am going to link the names on the census to the names in the database. I still have some work to do on the database before I can include my notes, which include a lot of info. The reason is that I have copied notes from other people's websites, etc, and in addition to that stuff being copyrighted, it is hardly fair to give the impression that it is my work! Once I have deleted it, I will change the database to include my notes. The 1840 Census of Jackson County is transcribed and I will probably have it online very shortly. I would like to also include all of John House's "Pioneers of Jackson County" -one of these days. :) This is an ongoing project, but I felt that I had enough that it was time to make it available to the rest of you. If you find errors, please let me know, and please give me the source for the correction. I have tried to source all of my data, but I know that it is woefully inadequate. If you have info you'd like added, send it on to me. My goal is to link everyone who lived in Jackson County between 1796 and 1850, but that includes the descendants. This is not a request for information - I am not simply collecting names. I am trying to construct the spiderweb that was Jackson county relationships. If you have a website that has Jackson County folks and would like to link to mine, just send me the URL. Enjoy! Betty

    1. [WVJackson] Genealogist Apprentice?
    2. In the summer before her first grade year, Katelyn Jane woke up, came downstairs & was petting our dog, a brown miniature dachshund named Wilt. As her bowl of Frosted Cheerios awaited, she looked up & asked, "Dad, who was the first Peters?" My eyes lit up! Here is a question for an amateur genealogist! Here is a question to which Dad knows the answer! I sat down beside her, looked into inquisitive brown eyes & preceded to tell her that the first known Peters in our line was her ggggg grandfather Zachariah Peters. I gave her our list of begats. I went from Zachariah to Jordan to Jonathan to Daniel to Burton to Shelby to Michael & finally to Katelyn. I felt confident in my reply. That's my final answer Regis! She thought for a moment & then clarified her earlier question, "No Dad, who was the first Peters to walk on the earth?" That, of course, was a question that Dad could not answer. But I felt good as I walked away with parting gifts. For you see my daughter's question was appropriate. As amateur genealogists, it is the direction that all of us travel. It is the elusive game for which we hunt. It is why we post. It is why we research. In the end, we are all constantly striving to find the first of our line. After yesterday morning, I believe that there may be another family historian & researcher in our house. Katelyn may just be the one that accompanies Dad to libraries, courthouses, reunions, antique shops & graveyards. She has grasped an important concept at a very early age. Life, my friends, is definitely good! Thanks for listening & as Katelyn's Great Grandmother Coleman used to say, "Ya'll come!" Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com

    1. [WVJackson] Re: Lydia Sayre Walton
    2. I have essentially the same info. that Skip does. I show Amelia "Millie" Rice born either CA 1799 Monongalia Co., WV (per the 1850 census) or ca. 1808 PA (per the 1880 census of Jackson Co., WV) Died 7 April 1885 Jackson Co., WV. "Jackson Co. WV Death Records 1856-1949 (N-Z)" lists her parents and says born Jackson Co., WV. This couldn't be your Millie if your dates and parents are correct and I have no other Millie Rice. Sorry! Toni

    2. Do any of you have any information on the Limely Mill that used to sit on the former C.R. Thorn land that was my father's (Dale Blake's) property in Sandyville? When the creek is low, you can still see where it used to sit. I just recently found out the name of the mill and would like any info any of you have. Also, who was C.R. Thorn? I'm sure there's probably someone on this board that knows or is related to this family. Thanks, Freda Blake Bradley
