She was a member and former elder of the First Presbyterian Church, Ripley, and was a member of the choir and the church women's group. She is survived by sons, Michael (Esther) Stover of Ripley, Robert Stover of Ravenswood, Benny Stover of Evans; daughter, Lora Mohney of Ripley; brothers, Donald (Maryann) Danis and Daniel (Sue) Danis of Burlington, VT; sisters, Doris (Edward) Ploof, and Annette (Louis) Mossey, of Colchester, VT, Val (Don) Sicard of Essex Junction, VT, Nancy Daly of DeLand, FL; 6 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl J. Stover; sister, Darlene Rice. Service will be Saturday, June 30, 2001--1 pm at the First Presbyterian Church, Ripley, WV, with the Rev. Willa Lucille Rollins, 93, of Ripley, WV, departed this life June 26, 2001 in the Ravenswood Care Center. She was born October 2, 1907 in Ripley, a daughter of the late Grover and Bessie (Bowles) McKown. She was a retired school teacher, former owner and operator of Rollins Lake, Ripley, and a member of the Mill Creek Farms Women's Club. She was a lifelong resident of Jackson County and attended the Evans United Methodist Church. Surviving are a son, Jim (Joyce) Rollins of Ripley; daughter, Clara Dell (Walter) Brown of Spencer; sister, Agnes Katherine McKown of Florida; 6 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Rollins; sister, Francis Lester; 1 grandchild. Service will be Saturday, June 30, 2001--10 am at Casto Funeral Home, Evans, WV, with the Rev. Walter Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Pine Hill Cemetery, Ripley. Visitation 7 - 9 pm Friday at the funeral home.
Stewart Eugene Sayre, 81, of Evans, Jackson County, WV, departed this life June 26, 2001, at CAMC, Memorial Division, Charleston, WV, following a brief illness. He was born June 22, 1920, at Evans, WV, a son of the late Elmer and Mary Jane (Stewart) Sayre. He was a former truck driver for Vanadium and Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. and retired from the WV Department of Highways, with 23 years service. He was a farmer and a cattleman and served on the board of directors of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service. He attended Mt. Moriah Church of Evans, where he taught Sunday school. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Virginia Casto Sayre; sons, Stewart Reynolds (Judy Boggess) Sayre of Ravenswood, David Eugene (Carolyn Moday) Sayre of St. Paris, OH, Stephen Thomas (Liz Taylor) Sayre of Evans; daughters, Judith Ann (Charles) Bunner of Ripley, Valeria Jeanette (Ray) McVay of Ripley, Clara Jane (Dale) Carney of Kenna, Letitia Gayle "Tuts" (Woodrow) Parsons of Ravenswood, 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Wilmer Sayre, Clayton Sayre, Woodrow Sayre, and 3 sisters, Willard Casto, Josephine Hartley and Opal Reynolds. Doris Lee (Carmichael) Riggs, 58, of Sandyville, Jackson County, WV, departed this life June 25, 2001, at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, WV, following an extended illness. She was born July 31, 1942, at Ravenswood, WV, a daughter of Naomi (VanKirk) Carmichael of Ravenswood and the late Joe Carmichael. She was a homemaker and attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Ripley. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Devon Riggs; sons, Kevin Riggs, Travis Riggs and Robert Riggs, all of Sandyville; daughters, Karen Johnson of Sandyville and Deanna Shaffer of Ripley; brothers, Larry Carmichael of Cottageville, Steven Carmichael, Jerry Carmichael and Mitchell Carmichael, all of Ravenswood; grandchildren, Jennifer Riggs, Christopher Johnson and Juanita Riggs, all of Sandyville and Eric Wells of Ripley. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and working crossword puzzles. Survivors include a son, Bob Rhodes of Chicago, IL; daughter, Ruby Casto of Nitro; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren. Hiram Thomas was born in Jackson County to Enoch Thomas and died in Fayette County where Backus is and the cemetery is named Gwinn, which I found. Enoch Thomas, Hiram's father, drowned and is buried on the old Thomas farm near Ripley, Jackson Co, WV. Thank you both for your kindness. Orris Murl Burkholder, 82, of the Evergreen Hills community, Cottageville, WV, died May 29, 2001, peacefully at his residence, following an extended illness. He was born December 5, 1918 in Nicholas County a son of the late, Quinten and Margaret (Fields) Burkholder. He was a retired maintenance welder from Kaiser Aluminum, Ravenswood, WV. He was a member of the United Steelworkers Union #5668, a former coal miner, a WWII Army veteran, a member of the VFW post #3488, Sandyville, WV, and he attended the Evergreen Hills Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are sons, Doyle (Jody) Burkholder of Vienna, and Roger Burkholder of Lakin; sisters, Ermal Burkholder of Nettie, and Mary Fugate of Alderson; granddaughter, Jodine Uppole of Davisville. I have a letter written to my wife's greatgrandmother on 2-14-1898 from her brother saying their father, Hiram Powers Thomas, died on 1-31-1898 and is buried in this cemetery.
