    1. [WVJackson] Lewis Garnes, 1773
    2. Cynthia Lowe
    3. Hello. Yesterday at my local Duluth, Georgia library I found an entry in Vol. 1 of the Ships Passengers Lists reference set for one "Lewis Garnes", arriving in America in 1773. This may be a relative of my Garnes line who subsequently settled in the Jackson County area. Does anyone out here have an inkling about this person, or any direct information? My great, great grandfather was (John) Lewis Garnes, born Feb. 17, 1868. Family story is that the first male Garnes to reach these shores did so on a "kings pardon", but his name is recorded as Joseph. Lewis may be an uncle, or "Lewis" may have been Joseph's middle name...and may have registered for the trip by that name. Many of the males in my line share the initials "J.L. Garnes." This is a long shot, but it may ring a bell for someone out in Jackson County. Kind Regards, Cynthia ~~ ><> ~~ ><> ~~ ><> ~~ ><> ~~ Cynthia Garnes Lowe minzma@mindspring.com Garnes Family Genealogy: www.thegarnesproject.com ~~ <>< ~~ <>< ~~ <>< ~~ <>< ~~~ ~~.~~.~~.~~.~~.~~.~~.~~.~~

I am interested if she has any connection that you know of to a George Washington VanMatre in Mason County, West Virginia. This is right next door to Jackson County. George Washington VanMatre, my great grandfather was born in 1884 with his mothers name on the death certificate as Sarah A. VanMatre along with his father, George Sr. But George Sr. was married to a Charlotte in 1881. I know Sarah and Dudley were divorced as in the 1880 census he is then with his third wife Rebecca. The Sarah Amanda VanMetre who married Dudley was from Ohio. Her parents were William and Catherine VanMatre. The 1900 census for George Jr. states his mother was born in Ohio. All the other children were children of Charlotte's who was born in Indiana. Sarah Amanda VanMatre were married on 5 May 1867 in Mason County. I also have additional information on the Staats family I would be more than happy to share. Melynie
