I have a very difficult problem that my cousin and I have been trying to solve for 13 years collectively. Here is who I am looking for: Charles LUCAS b 1866 in OH, but spent a great deal of his childhood in Wood County WV. He also spent a great deal of his adult life in OH. We have no death date on him, and have no place of burial for him. Charles LUCAS (the above's father), b. abt 1830 in Marshall County VA. No He also spent a great deal of time in OH and in later years, WV. I can tell you, that most of the info I have on the above father and son, has their lives right along the OH river. So I am concentrating this search in OH and WV, in counties right along the OH river. Here is what I would like to know: Does anyone know of a specific "LUCAS" cemetery? Can anyone with any list of occupants of cemeteries find either of these two Charles LUCAS' on them? Does anyone researching famlies in the countied along the OH river, recognize these names? I also apologize for the extreme vagueness....but it is all I know. I would be most grateful for any and all information and or suggestions as to where to turn next. Thanks so much, Joyce in Seattle

There is a little bit online: http://www.rootsweb.com/~deschart/z0001391.html which is the Lloyd descendant chart linked to the Ridenour. There's not much there, but it's a start! If you would like me to add your people, just email them to me and I'll list you as their contributor at the end of the Lloyd chart. ----- Original Message ----- From: Countryside Ford To: WVJACKSI-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, September 21, 2001 2:47 PM Subject: Lloyds Hi Everyone! I am researching the Lloyd and Ridenour family of Jackson County, WV. Here is what I know, and that may make it easier for someone who may be related. Homer E. Lloyd was born 9-4-1879 in Jackson, WV. He married Sarah A. Norris (b. 10-2-1879) on 7-26-1899. He died in November of 1973 in Stark County, Ohio. Sarah died on 6-1-1979 in Stark County, Ohio. Her parents were Alonzo Norris and Victoria Cummings. Homer's dad was William Lloyd and his mather was Elizabeth Ridenour. William Lloyd was born 3-28-1816, married on 11-17-1859, and died on 2-3-1905. Sarah Ridenour was born 12-1-1840 and that is all I have on her. Her parents are MArtin Ridenour and Nancy Jan Hawley. William Lloyd's parents are Thomas Lloyd and Anna? That is all I have. Perhaps there is someone who shares the same lineage? I would love to trade info and learn more about these people of Jackson County. Thanks! Lisa Shaffer
Dear friends and cousins, As many of you may have noticed, I am sort of obsessive about this hunt for our ancestors, you may witness that on my website. If you trace the surnames that are all caps, you'll find that many of my/our ancestors came to America in the 1600s and so many fought for this country. They fought the elements, the natives, they were in Bacon's Rebellion, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and on and on, serving on land and on the sea, including 3 brothers, 2 brothers who married my sisters and my own sweetheart. I am a patriot and I am proud of all these men and the women who supported them. We are America. The same is true of all the pioneers of Jackson County - you know that I am trying to prove that we are all linked as one family, sort of a large one, but then pioneers had large families. :) I find myself thinking that Jackson County, WV is a state of mind as well as a place. Mom always said that West Virginians are the friendliest people in the world, and I think she was right. I have a friend who was born in Ireland but he is an American. He has lived here for many years and he loves this country as much as any of us and perhaps far more than some. His family in Ireland is very upset with him and his family. You see, his son, Sean, who is a Canadian citizen - no, they have not been naturalized yet but will be - will be joining the US Marines in a few weeks, as soon as he gets his high school diploma. Sean believes in freedom, he doesn't have to do this. His aunt and grandmother in Ireland are condemming him for this, because they hate England and they see US as English allies. This is a political thing that I don't really understand, and I am not asking you to try to, only giving you the reason behind why my friend is heartbroken. He believes so much in what America stands for and has obviously passed that on to his son. It is hard enough at any time to see your son join the military, even in peacetime. Imagine it now. Imagine your son's grandmother acting like this. Imagine your heart breaking, too. If you approve, applaud and/or support this young man's decision to support the country of his heart, I would appreciate your telling him so. I would love to see you, West Virginia, the friendliest people on Earth, take him into your hearts and give him the support his own blood kin withholds. His name is Sean Campbell, he is 18 and willing to fight and die for this country and freedom. You may write to him at garryowen1@earthlink.net. If you want to condem or complain, address it to me, not him or this list, please. I apologize in advance to anyone who finds this message offensive. Thank you, Betty http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bbriggs/

Yes you are connected. I am a Dewees/Deweese Family Archives Researcher and concentrate on the branch that settled in Jackson County, West Virginia. I have tons and tons of family data, so the information I pass on to you will be abridged somewhat, but a a good idea as to your lineage. First, I must tell you all this data is documented in the Historical Library in Philadelphia, Pa., Dr. Jack Vaughn of Oxford, Ohio is the head archivist and my close friend. Basically this means the information is proven with documentation. The first Dewees we have recorded is an Ardriaen de Wees of Amsterdam, Holland, born ca. 1595. Dewees is Dutch, and the name anglicized means "the orphan" probably in reference to the first Dewees who was orphaned during the Spanish Inquisition, but that is supposition. Adriaen has been proven through marriage records, wills, burial records, and other data. He was an art broker and book dealer in Amsterdam, who brokered some of Rembrandts paintings. Here is where I will give you only the direct line (we do have the siblings and there families too). He had a son Hendricks Dewees who had a son Gerret Hendricks Dewees (b. ca. 1640- d. 1701) who was the first Dewees in America and mostlikely the progenitor of the vast majority of Dewees' here today. Gerret and his wife Syjtia Lewes had a son Lewis Dewees (also known as Lieuwes Lambert Dewees) b. 1670 - d. 1743 who married Mary Wheeler and moved from Germantown, Pa. to Kent County, Delaware. They had at least 6 children, one being Samuel Dewees (our line) 1719-1753. Samuel married Mary Williams around 1741 in Kent County, DE. They had at least 5 children, and the sons of this marriage fought in the Revolutionary War. Our John Dewees (our line) was a private in Captain Daliner's Company of the Delaware Line. John and his brother Joshua left Delaware and settled in the Virginia/Pennsylvania area, John in Fayette County and Joshua in Monongahela County. John was the progenitor of the Jackson County Dewees'. He was born 1749 and died April 1814 (will proven). He married Mary Updegrove in 1774 in Kent County, DE and moved to Fayette County. Mary was born 1753 and died November 5, 1818. They had at least 8 children we have followed. (1) Joshua Dewees (8-23-1775 to 12-10-1860) moved to Mason County with his family. (2) John Dewees (1777-after 1850) moved to Butler County, Ohio with his family. (3) Mary Dewees (1779-before 1811) (4) Sarah Dewees (1781-?) moved to Ohio (5) female Dewees (ca. 1783- died young) (6) Samuel Dewees (our descendant - more later)****** (7) William Dewees (1789 to 7-16-1859) moved to Jackson County, VA - married Ruth Battin the sister of Samuel's wife, Edith Battin. (8) Isaac Updegrove Dewees (1791-1837) who married catherine Carr, died young and is the subject of his son's autobiography., Recollections of a Lifetime. This book has a lot of nice data but the family structure was proven wrong. Now, to our Samuel Dewees. Samuel (1785- after 1860) married Edith Battin (1787- before 4-4-1851) on July 18, 1809 in Jefferson County, Ohio. He moved to Jackson County, Va. and raised a family that included: **following I have most of these to present day***** (1) Mary "Polly" Dewees (I have dates and family) she married Moses Parsons. (2) male Dewees (1812-?) (3) Rachel Charlotte Dewees (1814-ca. 1860) married Elijah Rollins Casto (I have children and dates) (4) Joshua Dewees (1815- ?) (5) Isaac Updegrove Dewees (6-1820 to 1-2-1904) married a Mary M. McClain (family moved to Athens County, Ohio) (6) Edith Dewees (1822-?) married Christopher Hershman - I have her children, etc., (7) Susanna Dewees (10-20-1823 to 9-10-1859) married George Riley Casto (8) Alfred E.S. Dewees (3-17-1825 to 3-25-1900) married to Elizabeth Casto and Sarah Jenkins. He was a veteran of Co. K, 11th WV Infantry and died in Athens County, Ohio (9) Benjamin Casto Dewees (7-14-1827 to 6-4-1907) ******This is my ancestor******* married 5 times - Veteran of Company K, 11th West Virginia Infantry, died in Wirt County. (10) John Wesley A. Dewees (4-21-1830 to 12-18-1908) married 2 times. Died in Athens County, Ohio (11) Robert Henderson Dewees ******your ancestor***** born July 1832 and died ?. He married twice. First to Levina Belle Hatcher on 1-18-1860. She was the daughter of Uriah Hillary Hatcher and Matilda Edens. Levina died shortly after and Robert married America Fuqua Hatcher (1848 to 4-5-1908), Levina's sister on 5-7-1862. [More below Samuel and Ediths family - children.] (12) Henry Spencer Dewees (8-18-1834 to 5-20-1913) who married Mary E. Barnhart on 4-6-1863. Henry was a veteran of Company K, 11th WV Infantry with brothers Alfred, Benjamin, nephew Moses Parsons Jr., and cousins William Jabel Dewees and Joshua Kessel Dewees (sons of William and Rachel Battin Dewees). Henry died in Meigs County, Ohio. (13) Sellinda Dewees (ca. 1836) I am still trying to verify she was Samuel and Edith's daughter, but believe this to be true. Now to your Robert Henderson Dewees and America Fuqua Hatcher: **children: (1) Matilda Ann Dewees (1867-?) married Clarence Sayre on July 8, 1890. (2) William Robert Dewees (1-21-1869 to 1-8-1943) married 5-27-1894 to Catherine Virginia Good. [children Rolla Eldow Dewees, Hobart Dewees, Jean Dewees, and Eugene Clair Dewees] Rolla married Pearl Elizabeth Carnutte - children Charles Ray, Mary Ruth, and George Norris Dewees. Charles married Beulah Miller - children Charles Ray (9-8-1951), Carolyn Sue (3-28-1954) and Jonathon Dewees (2-28-1957). I have your wife as Cathy and at least 2 children Abby and Joseph. (3) Minerva Ellen Dewees (1871-?) married Benjamin F. Stewart (son Leslie) (4) Jennie F. Dewees (9-20-1872 to ?) (5) Jessie L. Dewees (1877 to ?) married a Malissa and had at least 2 children, Gladis & Ivy. (6) John Wesley Dewees (June 1879 to ?) married a Mary E. Smith on 2-12-1899. More data on Hobart and Eugene Dewees (sons of William R. Dewees); and, I know that Mary Dewees married a Charles Cooper; George Norris Dewees married a Madeline Miller and had children (a) George William Dewees, (b)Rebecca Sue Dewees, (c) Martha Ann Dewees, (d) Mary Elizabeth Dewees, and (e) Sarah Louise Dewees. (a) George William Dewees married Linda Lamb and had 3 known children Christopher Steven Dewees (married Stacy Smith), Timothy Allen Dewees (married Stephanie Slater), and David Edward Dewees. Nance and had Robert Lee Nance and Matthew Douglas Nance (deceased). Married Carl Swain and had Kimberly Dawn Swain. (d) Mary Elizabeth married Michael Kinnard and had Meagan Rebekah Kinnard. Married Dana Lucas and had John David, Cory Allen, and Seth Abram Lucas. (e) Sarah Louise had Steven Lee Dewees. The Dewees brothers who fought in the Civil War (Company K, 11th West Virginia Infantry) were all wounded at least once, saw Lee surrender at Appomattox, and lost their nephew Moses Parsons Jr. who fell from a steamer on the Ohio River and drowned during his Regiments move to the New River Campaign, April 24, 1864. Some thoughts, ramblings if you will. These are not a smooth flowing brook. They are instead a meandering river of ideas. I find myself scanning the skies more than before But not necessarily in fear I watched the sunset last night As beautiful a sight as I've seen in years Since last Tuesday, we have become a closer nation, more tolerant of our differences & more thankful for the little things. It could have been me. I consider myself extremely lucky that I wasn't in one of those hijacked planes. I'm fortunate that my place of work is not in the Pentagon or World Trade Center. I saw a proud man, dressed in black leather & riding a Harley this weekend. On the back of his bike, tied to his "sissy bar," flew a huge American flag. We followed him in our car, clapped as we passed & yelled out our support of "Ol' Glory." An upturned thumb was his response. We are a united populace! Some of our local Viet Nam vets are ready to reenlist. It would be nice if they could be part of the military retaliation, part of a war where there would be massive public approval & support. We sure owe them that. The swagger has returned to our walk. Flags are flying everywhere. I found the Rev. Billy Graham very inspirational on Friday, as did many other Americans. Does this mean that the Pledge of Allegiance & prayer could be returning to our schools? We are still, as recent vigils indicate, "one nation under God." I'm sure the atheists will have something to say about that. And we as a country wouldn't have it any other way. For here, we allow freedom of speech & support friendly debate. I'd like to use this forum to thank my cousins & research partners for their continued support & for their friendly letters. Thanks also to the list administrators who have allowed the flexibility of my postings, which sometimes wander away from genealogy's mainstream. For that I apologize. But I believe that history & how it affected our ancestors or how it is affecting our descendants is an important part of genealogy. As always, I look forward to reading your comments. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com
