    2. Karen Hollinger
    3. There was a TB Sanitarium in Mt. Vernon, Ohio.   My mother-in-law was there to recover from TB.   You could try there. In a message dated 8/13/2012 2:59:52 AM Eastern Standard Time, hoschar1@comcast.net writes: It is possible that she may have had TB not a mental illness.  Here in Beaver County, PA -- there used to be what was referred to as the TB Sanitarium.  I would assume that someone from Jackson County would know where it might have been in Jackson County. ----- Original Message -----From: "Robin" <robin@triedit.net> To: wvjackso@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, August 10, 2012 12:54:12 PM Subject: [WVJACKSO] Sanitarium? Hi folks-my great grandfather's last wife was listed in the 1940 Jackson County Census as being in a sanitarium.  They lived out Trace Fork.  I can't seem to find her through the ancestry.com search, but there are so many transcription mistakes it might be easier to just look at lists. Her name was Audrey Hanner Burcham Pyatt and she would have been about 35, born in Ohio.  Her kids are listed living with her husband Carl, their stepfather. Anyone have any ideas where people from that area would be committed? Thanks, Robin Pyatt Bellamy ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to WVJACKSO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message -------------------------------To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to WVJACKSO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. Re: [WVJACKSO] Lynchings
    2. RootsWeb Gateway Notification
    3. [1]ancestry This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: nannunatane Surnames: Coon, Cunningham, Duff, Drake, Ryan, Burnett, Counts Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: This is a composite of many different articles posted on the Lynching of Ches Coon and Robert Duff as well as the murder of Rev Ryan and George Duff--there was a lot more info in these stories as to what happened before this such as the murder of Dan Cunningham's brother Nathan Cunningham a deputy U S Marshall in 1877--and what happened after such as they tried to poison and kill Dan Cunningham-- Waid Counts /Countz was indicted for the murder of Nathan Cunningham and at least 25 people were indicted for the lynching of the Duff boys and Coon-- and the fact that it was confirmed that Ches Coon's 44 Colt revolver could NOT have passed thru the exterior wall, the body of Rev Ryan, thru the headboard and into the wall--- only a higher caliber rifle could do this and there was an empty Winchester cartridge found outside of Rev Ryan's window-- the only Winchester in that area at the time belonged to a member of the Mob... As I said this is a composite of what happened as listed in many different newspapers in late 1887 and early 1888 such as the Albany Ledger, 20 Jan 1888, Fri, Page 2 The Wheeling Daily Intelligencer, 25 Nov 1887, Fri, Page 1 and the Courier Journal ( Louisville, KY) Wed Oct 19 1887 page 1 to name a few-- the reason these are in papers from all over the place is because each story was carried in many newspapers across the nation and some copies are better than other as to being able to read them--each story originated from a locale in W VA..... A composite because there was different tidbits listed in one article but not in the other articles --- I could NOT find one article that had everything-- there was a lot of contradicting info in the articles--so much it basically became a he said--she said type of thing--- as to who was right and who was wrong comes down to which side of the fence you are on....I am NOT related to anyone in these lines BUT did a lot of searching on this affair... I also added an update at the very bottom as to what happened to Waid Counts ________________________________________________________ Abt 11 o'clock on Thursday Oct 13 1887, roughly 5 or more men demanded admittance to the home of Rev Ryan near Walton, W VA----Ryan abt 60 years old was a pretty gritty man, grabbed his shot-gun, cocked both barrels and ordered them to keep off or be shot- a shot was fired thru the front door of Ryan's home only doing damage to the door --Ryan asked what is wanted! The reply from the inner door was---- Old Man, we want your money and mean to have it. A second shot was fired thru the wall perhaps to frighten Ryan but it pierced the heavy weathered boarding, the lath and plaster, ( note nk-some articles say thru the foot-board ) clear thru the body of Ryan, thru the thick head-board of the bed and entered the wall of the room--- one barrel of Ryan's gun discharged as he fell, lodging in the wall but the other was still cocked---this caused a halt-- the wife and one son took Ryan to an upstairs room, after which the murderers ransacked the lower part of the house, getting nothing and overlooking the money.---Ryan died the next morning---before he died, Ryan said he thought he recognized one of the VOICES as that of Perry Drake but couldn't be sure... Warrants were sworn out by the son Thomas P Ryan Jr for Peter Drake, whom the old man thought he recognized among his murderers, George Duff and Winchester 'Ches' Coon-- in pencil the name of Robert M Duff was added to the warrant.. Constable Gibson with a posse of 5 started to make the arrest... Drake was arrested before the warrant was issued and went along without objection--- a large crowd was following the Constable as they went to arrest Geo Duff and Ches Coon... They slipped up to the house where young George Duff was reading, and all at once they fired a volley in the house. George ran to the west door and there Bob Skeens, a son of old Frank Skeens, and Joshua Presley stood with rifle guns, and fired, one ball taking effect in the abdomen. Young Duff fell but recovered, grabbed his revolver and by the aid of Ches Coon whipped the cowardly gang, shooting Bill Skeens down and wounding young Raines. George had to succumb to the fatal wound, and Ches Coon drove his assailants away---- W. S. Duff came and told Ches Coon he was accused of helping to kill Reverend Ryan of Roane County. Ches Coon told W. S. Duff to go and see the gang and tell them he would surrender on condition he was to be protected, and said if the gang had come like men there would have been no trouble. Ches Coon had supposed the attack was by personal enemies... Robert Duff was arrested without trouble-- On Sat. Oct 15 at noon the prisoners were taken to the scene of their crime ---Franklin Shamblin was arrested also after the mob arrived at the Ryan house.----Squire John C. Lowe, of Walton, Roane County was coroner, he being summoned to the scene--an inquest was held over the body of Mr. Ryan---- Mrs. T.P. Ryan, and her son T. P. Ryan, Jr., were sworn by the Coroner, as was also Thomas C. Hunt, Ryan's nearest neighbor. Mrs. Ryan and her son swore they did not see or recognize any one, but that Mr. Ryan told them that he heard a voice on the outside and it sounded as if it were the voice of Perry Drake. A preliminary trial was set for Monday---Squire Gandee ordered the prisoners taken to Walton... the constables disobeyed the orders and took the prisoners to Geo Cook's and Duff to Dave Cox's for the night--Squire Gibson took charge of Perry Drake, Frank Shamblin and Ches Coon aided by fifteen of Skeen's, Counts, Presleys, John Faber, Jess Winters, Ben Coon and some others. That night, the Consolidated Band met and a vote was taken, Duff and Ches Coon were to be assassinated at nine o'clock P.M. October 15th, 1887. A vote was taken as to Perry Drake and Frank Shamblin. Frank Shamblin was to be turned loose and Drake was not to be hurt as he had married a sister to Winfield Scott Kiser, whose family belonged to the Organization--- The question arose who would lead the mob. Jess Good of Kentuck, Jackson County was first chosen, he refused but said he would go along and take a hand. The second selection was Lewis Johns, a son-in- law of Bob Cleek,---He also refused---- Ben Coon, an uncle of Ches Coon, who then lived in Bell Grove, Jackson County, was the third man called on and he accepted. The meeting adjourned and the mob started for Ches Coon at Joe Cook's.----the members of the Consolidated Band notified Ches Coon that they intended to hang him... Ches Coon asked for a paper and wrote a letter to his mother, Mrs Eliza E Coon, Huntington in which he addressed her as Darling Mother and told her of the situation and the charge and adding " This is the last time you will ever hear from me, for I am going to be hung. Give my regards to my sisters and brothers, and this is all I can say: It is my dying truth, I am not guilty. God bless you, my darling mother. your loving son, W. C. Coon On arrival Ben Coon, Henry Kiser, and Waid Counts entered the house and called for Ches Coon----Coon asked Gibson to protect him--he refused. Coon then asked Gibson to let him have a gun and he would protect himself, this was also refused--- Ches Coon was taken without resistance by his guards as 2 of the guards belonged to the " Band"--- he was lead a short distance to the bank of the creek, was asked to confess and refused, and he was hung----This Organized Band hung him so his toes touched the ground. He fought for life --wore the toes off his shoes and toes trying to liberate himself. There was abt 70 persons, partly innocent spectators attracted by curiosity.... After Ches Coon was hung, the mob then went to Dave Cox's, called Zack Hubbard out and had a secret confab with him-- Ben Coon and Waid Counts called for Duff----Duff made a desperate resistance, but single handed, the guards doing nothing in his defense.. Duff was not even allowed to put on his shoes. These two men tore him from his wife and dragged him one fourth of a mile up the Creek to the Lynn Camp school house---He cried out as they dragged him away: " That is Wade Kountz who has hold of me!" They claimed that Ches Coon made a confession implicating Dan Cunningham as the leader in all murderous robberies and the Ryan murder. This confession , it was alleged declared " Doc Jones and Dick Shamblin innocent of connection with the robbery of Jacob Keyser. This ended it, as reported. These 2 men named had been positively identified by Keyser as the men who robbed him of his money 2 weeks before. They were out on bond at the time of the lynching and were present. Duff's last words were addressed to his wife, who was present: "Ellen, they are going to kill me! I tell you for the last time I am not guilty." They stabbed him in the stomach and breast, cut a gash in his throat and then his throat was cut from ear to ear---. His only words were " Oh God! Oh, God!"---- the blood gushing from Duff's neck splashed a mob member by the name of "Si" Counts ( Wade's brother ) who fainted...... The body of Ches Coon hung in the tree and Duff lay on the road all that night and the next day ( Sunday) which followed, so great being the reign of terror that nobody dared obey the dictates of decency and humanity and remove them... On Sunday evening , a mock inquest was held over the bodies of Duff and Coon and a verdict rendered that the two men came to their death at the hands of a mob, parties unknown -- Ches Coon, who had no friends near, was buried by a farmer.. Duff was buried near his home by relatives.... Perry Drake's preliminary was Monday morning at the Ryan residence-- he was taken upstairs and in the presence of 5 witnesses every artifice was resorted to obtain a confession, but totally in vain--- He remarked that they might kill him, for they had him foul; but he would tell the truth---- He knew nothing of the murder; he was not friendly with Ches Coon, the Duffs or Dan Cunningham who had arrested him a short time before for illicit distilling. He insisted on a trial at 1st, but later was persuaded to waive a hearing and upon making an affidavit that he did not believe his life would be safe in the Roane County jail at Spencer, he was ordered to be transferred to Kanawha County jail---- after much trouble and danger he reached there under the guard of Capt Burnett, of the Eureka Detective Agency, and a strong posse--no warrants have been issued for Dan Cunningham, who it is alleged was one of the gang of murderers.... Drake has never confessed directly or indirectly, nor did any of the accused confess at any time---Drake is still in the Kanawha jail, but has so little fear of indictment that he refuses to employ counsel.. Dan Cunningham is at Charleston now, under the protection of the detectives--he has never tried to elude justice-- has been before Judge Fleming and lately been with Detective Baldwin and Burnett to Jackson and Roane County to secure evidence against the lynchers, who will be prosecuted, probably in Roane County soon or later...._ __________________________________________________________ the year this happened was 1898--some say it was a stormy day and then there is this account Beckley Post-Herald, 04 Mar 1970, Wed, Page 4 One day Waid Counts and one of his sons were traveling along a little used wayside road---there was not a cloud in the sky that day and no sign of a storm----suddenly out of the blue sky there came a flash of forked lighting that instantly killed Waid Counts and his son---- local people recalled seeing the sudden flash of lighting and clap of thunder but didn't know Waid and his son were killed until they were found 4 days later---- some say that God Almighty took care of Waid Counts for his alleged crimes.... 3. [1]ancestry This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: nannunatane Surnames: Cunningham, Coon, Duff, Drake, Mehen Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: the account mention above that was not copied is actually Daniel Cunningham's Memoirs which can be found at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~varussel/families/cunningham.html or by doing a search for Daniel Cunningham's Memoirs... Dan Cunningham was tried for accessory to murder and ACQUITTED--as for Dan Cunningham's reputation as hero or robber and murderer, you might just want to do a newspaper search for Dan to see exactly what he actually did as a US Marshall You said--- This is the story handed down in my family, it is more or less confirmed by James P. Mylott in the book A Measure of Prosperity: a History of Roane County, West Virginia there are actually many articles posted on this lynching ranging in date from right after it happened to articles in the 1950s-1960s-- which I will post a composite of in another email-- this was confirmed by an article in the Chicago Tribune, 24 Oct 1887, Mon, Page 1 where Capt James Mehen who right before this had been a deputy U S Marshall in the area tells the background story of the county-- below is a basic transcription of the article Chicago Tribune, 24 Oct 1887, Mon, Page 1 Parkersburg, W VA Careful investigations by a correspondent into the lynching of Chester Coon and Robert Drake( nk should be DUFF) for the murder of Rev Ryan show the lynchings were not by Sheriff's posse but by a gang of roughs, including many of the illicit whiskey distillers who infest that wild section of the state. Capt. James Mehen, at present Chief of Police of this city who had recently been a Deputy U S Marshall says Kaintuck is a wild, sparcely settled part of W VA-- over the last 10 years this area has been notorious for the large amount of illicit distilling carried on there--- the number of moonshiners increased every year coming largely from KY and VA--in time they grew to such numbers that they were successfully able to resist officers who came to arrest them---a few years ago Deputy Marshall Cunningham was shot dead ( note nk- Nathan Cunningham) and no one has ever been called to account for it-- This Cunningham was a near relative to the Duff family, and after his death, the Duffs gave the U S officers all the assistance they could in making arrests--- in many instances, they served the papers themselves--their assistance was almost invaluable to the officers-- the moonshiners terrified most people so badly that they were afraid to give any information for fear of having their property destroyed---By their course the Duffs gained the ill-will of the moonshiners, and they narrowly escaped more than once the vengeance of their enemies---the moonshiners and their sympathizers formed a large part of the population and expressions to the effect that the Duffs " ought to go' have been heard---these moonshiners held a meeting a few days after the Sheriff's posse arrest Duff, Coon and Drake and resolved to lynch them-- the Sheriff's posse had nothing to do with the lynching--- the Sheriff had temporarily locked in the prisoners in a private residence and they were taken by the moonshiners--after hanging Coon, they dragged Duff, whom the moonshiners had a special spite against, to the same spot-- Coon's body was still dangling from the tree---they did not hang Duff but at a given signal, his throat was cut--his body horrible stabbed, great gashes being cut in it as though the lynchers could not sufficiently revenge themselves for his assisting the US officers in raiding the illicit distillers---though the 3rd prisoner was still left-- he was the only one whom the Ryans claimed to have recognized by voice, the lynchers dispersed after killing Duff and nothing more was seen of them in the neighborhood.... 3. Hello Fern, I am very surprised that any local person would not know my name. They must be new to the area as I have lived close the cemetery since September 1950. My name is Lesley Shockey and email address is LesShockey@frontier.com I apologize for not responding earlier but I have been dealing with the death of my wife earlier this month. We have many Wilcox burials in Independence Cemetery but there are no readable markers for the two that you name. On the very front row near the site of the old church are two that perhaps are related to you John S. Wilcox. They are: B Wilcox 1824-1897 E A Wilcox 1823-1906 There is room for one person to be buried on either side of them but no markers. To the right of them is a 10'x20' plot with no markers at all. They be burials on this but not easy to determine and the two that you are looking for could be there. The plat map for the front 21 rows of the cemetery has been lost since sometime before the 1950s. Two of us spent a summer trying to recreate as much of a plat map as we could from the markers that we could make out anything at all on. 3. Thanks for the message, David. We had considered that they were out of state. I checked the Ohio On-line Death index and there was no joy. I will look at Ohio more closely. They had a son and daughter in Ripley during the time frame of their deaths. But they could well have been with another child in Ohio. I will look at that again. 2. Judy Burns via
    3. Hello to the list, I am looking for the death records for Joel Sayre and Sarah Jane Sayre. He was born in 1852 and she was born in 1853. They lived all their lives in Ripley and were in the 1930 census at ages 78 and 76. They didn't appear in the 1940 census and I assume that they were deceased by 1940. They are listed on Findagrave as being in unmarked graves at Mount Moriah Cemetery. I have searched WV archives, called the courthouse, and checked records on Family Search. I cannot find when they died. I am wondering if anyone on the list knows of any funeral home records that exist for a funeral home that would have been operating in the 1930's. Thanks for reading!
