    3. Dear List Members, When I was in WV, I arranged to get a VFW flag for my gt grandfather's grave, and then I decided that he really should have a GAR flag since he served in the Civil War. I contacted Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War duvcw@comp.net and they sent me the applications for membership. Compared to the DAR requirements, the applications are fairly easy. You need proof of lineage; i.e. birth, marriage and death certificates, as well as the military papers proving your ancestor's service. You do not need Census info. When you receive the membership application, there is an explanation of acceptable proofs. The initial cost to join is $26 which includes the first year dues of $6. If, for some reason, you are not accepted, they will refund your money. All women, 8 years or older, are eligible providing that it is a direct lineal descent from a veteran and not through adoption. I sent in the applications for both myself and my 9 yr old granddaughter today, by registered mail. It isn't necessary to do that but I wanted a return receipt. Since my gt grandfather lived and died in WV, I do not plan to join a "Tent" (Chapter), but you have the option of doing that. Hope this will encourage someone else to apply. It's a lovely way to honor an ancestor.
