    1. Re: [WVHARRIS] Re: [Northern Neck books
    2. Hi, First Swiger is in Monongalia Co. Books and the Northern Neck Books are Land grants etc. Here is a description of the books as I saw them. I am pasting it in. And the description of the other one with Swiger is at the bottom of this E'mail. Cathy With this set you will be ready to do some serious research into VA counties and some of those that became West Virginia. All 3 VA Land Grant Books are by the noted Gertrude Gray, in Red, gilt lettering in new condition, (yet a welcome addition to your shelf for more than their appearance). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- FIRST ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, 1694-1742. [Vol. I] Gertrude E. Gray 184 pp., Indexed. (1987), 1997. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- " The Northern Neck of Virginia comprises all of the territory between the Potomac and the Rappahannock Rivers. The "headright" system, widely used for acquiring land in Virginia was never recognized in the Northern Neck. People wanting to acquire land there had to purchase a warrant and obtain a survey before they were issued a grant. The original Grant Books, now on microfilm, were used in making this collection of abstracts, and they generally provide the following information: the name of the grantee, dates of warrant and survey, date and location of grant, amount of acreage, names of former owners/occupiers, names of adjacent property owners, and often the names of heirs and other family members. Altogether, in more than 2,000 abstracts, over 5,000 early Virginia residents are cited, all of them easily located in the index." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- SECOND ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, 1742-1775. [Vol. II] by Gertrude E. Gray 282 pp., Indexed. (1988), 1993 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- " This second volume in the series has abstracts of all of the grants from 1742 to 1775, a period that saw the formation and settlement of Frederick, Fairfax, Culpeper, Loudoun, Fauquier, and Dunmore (changed in 1778 to Shenandoah) counties in Virginia, and Hampshire and Berkeley counties now in West Virginia. The abstracts show grant book designation, page number, name of grantee, place of residence (if given), number of acres in grant, location of grant, surveyor, adjoining land owners, and date the grant was issued. Altogether, in more than 4,000 abstracts, about 7,500 early Virginia residents are cited, all of them listed in the index." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- THIRD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, 1775-1800.[Vol. III] by Gertrude E. Gray 293 pp., Indexed. 1993. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- "The third volume in this series treats all Northern Neck land grants from 1775 to 1800. The majority of the grants abstracted for this volume apply to tracts of land in Frederick, Shenandoah, Culpeper, Loudoun, and Madison counties in Virginia, and Hampshire, Hardy, and Berkeley counties, now in West Virginia. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ----- Original Message ----- From: "K J Loccisano" <kjloc@1st.net> To: <WVHARRIS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 18, 2000 8:14 AM Subject: [WVHARRIS] Re: [Northern Neck books > Hi, > Cathy, what are the northern neck books and what information about the > Swigers would I seexpect fo find in them? > > Kim Randolph Loccisano > > > -----Original Message----- > From: CID at KID'S CORNER <cathez@teleport.com> > To: WVHARRIS-L@rootsweb.com <WVHARRIS-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: Sunday, September 17, 2000 8:07 PM > Subject: Re: [WVHARRIS] Another book for look ups > > > >Hi Mary, > >I sure will.
