    2. Barbara, I have the book you mentioned. I ordered it at the following website: http://www.genealogy-books.com/books/gpcwva.html. It comes in two volumes, is paperback and costs $75. It has info on a Bond family starting with Brumfield Bond who died in 1890, and his children, Booth Bond and Xenia Ethel Bond. If you need any other information, let me know. Sharon

    1. [WVHARRIS] Look-ups
    2. CNL
    3. Dear list, I know that only some of you actually use our Harrison County look-up resources, but I was asked to send this because of reoccurring problems. If anyone has a better idea of how to get this message across, please let me know privately. Unfortunately, multiple postings on the website have proven not to be very effective. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Harrison Co WVGenWeb site, we offer complimentary look-ups in resources that we own. These include censuses, marriage records, cemetery readings, etc: "I asked Cathy to send this to the Harrison County List anonymously. I am a look-up volunteer for several counties including Harrison Co. Realizing that there is often some frustration in requesting and receiving queries, I have some suggestions and comments. I asked for this to be anonymous because I don't want to offend the many wonderful people for whom I have done look-ups, but at the same time, I would like to shake up those who have been either rude or demanding. 1. Please remember that the look-up volunteers are just those -- volunteers who take time from their own research to help you. We do make mistakes. Please be patient with us. Often multiple queries will come in at the same time and it might take a while to answer yours. I love sharing information and helping people, but quite frankly, I'm not very happy when I receive a query message, which says, "I need John Smith." I am less inclined to go out of my way to help a person who makes a demand like that. 2. Many of the volunteers do look-up queries for multiple counties. Please put the county and State for which you are requesting the query. It will save the volunteer from having to write you and ask for more information. Many states have counties with the same names. 3. Please remember that the information you have requested might not be in our books. There are several reasons for this. People used middle names so if you request a look-up under a certain given name, it might not be there because the person used a middle name or nickname. This is really quite common. In the Census, people were often listed under initials with no given names. We have no control over this and can only give you the information in the books-- if any. 4. Please don't ask for a blanket search; under copyright laws, we can't do that. The genealogical books run from 1850 to 1920; actually quite a long span of time. Please don't ask for " John Smith in Harrison County." You will have a response more quickly if you give some idea of the year range and either the town or district. A volunteer could spend a lot of time looking for someone in 1850 when that person wasn't born until 1880. The 1850 Census book is easy to use, as is the 1880, because it contains all districts and is alphabetical. Districts divide the books beginning with the 1900 Census and so the volunteer must go through each district looking for a particular surname and given name. If you have any additional information concerning your ancestor, please add that when you make the query. Knowing that John Smith had a wife named Susannah and a child named Edward makes our job much easier. 5. Please remember that the law did not require births and deaths to be reported, until some time in the 1920s. There are many births and deaths that were never recorded. The volunteers have no control over that. Even if you know, beyond a doubt, that your people were in Harrison Co during a particular time, we may not be able to find them. 6. And finally, please write and thank the volunteer for whatever work they did for you. Volunteers do look-up queries for the love of genealogy and a strong sense of obligation, and often spend a lot of time working on your surnames. The volunteer look-up programs are wonderful and free; please treat the volunteers are you would wish to be treated." Thank you for your time, Cathy

I know it is for Monongalia Co. but who knows. Look at all the surnames covered. Thank you, Cathy Genealogical and Personal History of the Upper Monongahela Valley, West Virginia Bernard L. Butcher (1912), 1999 Softcover, two volumes, 1999 reprint of this 1912 two volume set, as new, Index, 1,037 total pages. According to the publisher: "These two volumes present in the aggregate the most exhaustive collection of West Virginia genealogies ever assembled. Some 400 families are treated, each family sketch commencing with the known ancestors of the first settler and proceeding in the direct line of descent to representatives of the family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The genealogies are presented in a series of independent sketches and incorporate the important facts regarding the ancestry, personal careers, and matrimonial alliances of those who held leading positions in social, professional, and business life. This work was originally published in 1912 in three volumes consisting of a series of historical sketches and a multitude of full-page photographic portraits; however, for reasons of economy, these have been omitted, enabling us to reprint an abridged edition in two volumes. 1. [WVHARRIS] genalogical books- LOOKUPS
    2. Hi, I just purchased a book on Greenbrier Co.. I have a bid in on two other books, for different Counties. Here is the discription of the book I just purchased. Greenbrier County, West Virginia Wills 1780-1865, compiled by Pauline Haga softcover bound [8 ½ x 11], 93 pages with index and map This is a basic abstraction of the wills from 1780-1865 from Greenbrier County! In the abstracts you can expect to find the deceased, date, place, some family members or others as witnesses and executors/trix. Sometimes brief sometimes lengthy with more info. She has also included original copies of a few wills, (perhaps so we will appreciate how hard her job really is!). \ Anyone wanting a look up, just let me know. The book won't get here for about a week but let me know and I will do as soon as it arrives. Cathy

    1. [WVHARRIS] Capt. Dick Davisson and Martha Jean Kuhn/Grafton, WV
    2. Dear Fellow Genealogist: I am a subscriber to the West Virginia Magazine and I have found an article that may be of some interest to someone. In December 1943, LIFE magazine published a story on a letter that was sent to Martha Jean Kuhn from a Capt. Dick Davisson during the World War [I or II?]. He was stationed in England at the time of this letter. West Virginia magazine republished the letter in it's October 2000 edition. The magazine asked around Grafton to see if anyone knew what happened to this couple and they could find nothing. If they do know what happened to this couple, they will publish a follow up story. The article states that Capt. Davisson spoke of a Sud and Doggie [names of friends], about not marrying Ms. Kuhn before the war, about drives w/ Ms. Kuhn to Monongalia County, wanting/missing hot baths [LOL], the Wonder Bar [where they would go to listen to the jukebox], missing Ernie's burgers, missing his Mom's baked ham dinner, having a chocolate malted at Malone's Drug store [where he worked as a soda jerk and mentions if a Ray Shaw still worked there], going to the Grafton Cemetery to hear speeches and decorate graves on Memorial Day, mentions a Bob [his brother, I assume, as he speaks of "Bob and I" when we were kids], and wonders about the WV Betas. Does anyone know of this Capt. Dick Davisson and what became of him and Ms. Kuhn? If so, please email me privately and I will give you the address to West Virginia Magazine so that they can find out how this story ended. They also have a web site at www.wonderfulwv.com. I don't know if you can reach them through their web site or not. Sincerely, Tina McKie Buckhannon, WV

    3. Dear List, I don't normally pass these messages on but if the info is correct, then this is a caution and worth checking out before you subscribe. I did check the website. They charge $79.99 for the subscription; currently they are offering a special price of $49.99. When I tried to check their affiliates; information abt the website coordinators; or the disclaimer, I got a broken link. I wasn't familiar with this site, but if I had seen what they offer, I would have been interested in subscribing--until reading this message. Mariana ----- Original Message ----- Subj: Genealogy scam Date: 09/03/2000 6:30:57 AM Mountain Daylight Time I received this message after it was forwarded to the INGENWEB state coordinator: About 2 weeeks ago we received a complaint from an Archives submitter that her materials were found on a genealogy subscription service: www.familydiscovery.com The submitter was able to do a little digging and found that they were linking to her files housed on her server, but shrink-wrapped inside a frame so it appears to be THEIR work. About 10 days ago, to investigate this, I signed up with familydiscovery. To date, I have not received a user id or password to get inside. The registered owners of the web site gave bogus telephone numbers in their registration. One number goes to a recorded message line; the other to a carpet company. Some of the e-mail adds on their web site bounce. Standing on the outside and looking through the window, it appears that several folks' web sites have been prize-mined: http://www.familydiscovery.com/whatsnew.htm The Storey Co., IA and the Washington Co., PA stuff seem to come from USGenWeb sites. Some of the other IA and NC stuff seems to come from non-USGW sites. None of the materials seem to be housed at either rootsweb or usgennet. If anyone out there is or has been a member of familydiscovery -- or has been ripped off by them, I ["Joy Fisher" jfisher@ucla.edu>] would like to hear from you. Permission is granted to forward this message. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= wally@calweb.com

    1. [WVHARRIS] Cullinan, McGann
    2. Hi, In 1979, my family received a letter from a woman in Clarksburg who was looking for her CULLINAN family, which is mine. My aunt and she wrote but then lost track, and my aunt died in 1983.. Her full name was Kathleen CULLINAN McGOWN. If anyone who reads this is familiar with anyone connected with her, I wish you would let me know or have them get in touch with me, as I am anxious to make contact with this part of my family again. Thanks so much to anyone who can help. Nancy Chamberlain

    1. [WVHARRIS] SHEETS, CONGROVE
    2. Hello, Researching my SHEETS and CONGROVE ancestors who came through Harrison County early in its history. Would appreciate any additional information and exchange with fellow researchers & descendants: John Sheets (c1775 PA - 22 Aug 1855 Wood Co., (W)Va) married 10 April 1806 to Susan Congrove (c1775 - 26 June 1855 Wood Co., (W)Va) in Harrison Co. by George Towers (Harrison Co. Marriage Book 1, page 90). John was son of John & Mary Sheets. This Sheets clan came down from Franklin Co., PA to Hampshire Co., (W)Va then to Harrison area before going into Belleville area of Wood County. Other first names include Susan's father may have been William Congrove but it may also have been Elijah Congrove. There is a Marriage Bond (Harrison County Book 2, pg 151) on Susanna Congrove & John Sheets that has the marks of Elijah Congrove & John Sheets in 1806, but Elijah is not listed specifically as father. Other related individuals' marriages include: Lucy Congrove in July 1807 marriage bond with Abraham HICKMAN (Book 2, pg 220). William Congrove is listed as father Elijah Congrove married Mary HARDMAN on July 22, 1807 (marriage book 1, pg 91). Henry Sheets to Polly Sheets in 1808 is also recorded in Harrison Co (marriage book 1, pg 101). His brother married Susan Congrvoe. She was a daughter of Michael & Elizabeth Sheets. They were cousins. This group of Sheets may or may not be related to the descendants of Conrad Sheets, many of whom where also in Harrison County at the same time. Best of success in your searches, Mark Moeser Wedding was performed by the same minister, as was a marriage of Jacob Sheets to Ann Ireland in Nov 1808 and Catherine Sheets to George Sheets in August 1808.
