Dear List, I'm beginning to lose track of the cemeteries I've sent to Cathy, but bless her heart, somehow she keeps them straight. She has added the most recent transcriptions to the Harrison Co webpage today so you can check them out if you are interested. Mariana
When I went to the Clerks office I was told that a cemetery could not be sold with the land. My grandmother was burried at the county poor farm and the county sold the land. They told me that the cemetery is still considered open to the public because they can not sell the cemetery per say. I was told that it was up the the family members to keep the up keep. Hi list members, This just came across via the State GenWeb- it's a new mailing list for census look-ups across the United States. I have not joined (yet!), so I'm not entirely certain how it all works. I will put it on the "More online resources & records" section of the Harrison Co GenWeb page asap: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvharris/ Since I'm not affiliated with this census mailing list, if you have any questions, try the rootsweb mailing list site. Thank you, everyone, who sent information on protecting Cemeteries. It would truly be a shame if these wonderful treasures are lost-- not only for researchers but for anyone who values history. I have seen, first hand, the damages done to cemeteries in Ohio by the mining companies. I'm sure that the same thing has happened in WV. I have forwarded all the messages to the person who wrote me. Thank you so much; Harrison Co people are the greatest! Mariana
Dear List, Does anyone know of any WV laws-- either State or county--protecting old Cemetery from destruction? I received this message concerning Baptist Cemetery, Ten Mile Creek nr Robey. "Any idea on how we could find out who now owns this plot of ground. [referring to Tenmile Cemetery] I am worried of its loss via construction. There are lots of new homes going up as retirees take advantage of the open space and low land prices. The plot could be in private hands now. It is about to disappear by the overgrowth. (______) knows of an old cemetery up in the woods in Camp Run. In the 1930 most of the hills were pastures and open. The overgrowth has been in the last 50 years so there may be many losses. And there are new logging roads being put in all over the place." Sometime ago, there was a discussion on one of the county lists abt this subject, but I can't remember what was said nor what list it was on. Are there laws in place to protect these old treasures and does anyone know who is responsible for keeping Cemeteries cleared if they are not perpetual care and no longer being used? Mariana
Hi, Someone posted a connectionb for census look ups for state census. It had links for some states and abbrev. for each state. I can't remember which list or who posted it. I put it in a folder to look at later and now I can't find it. If it would'nt be any trouble or some one else saved it, could you please re- post it? Thank you much, Cathy
Hi Listers! It's time to remind you that I do two death look-ups per request from the Harrison County Death Records, 1853-1903. Please send an approximate death year when emailing me. My book contains a surname index only, so it's rather time-consuming to search unless I have a time frame. Also, some have emailed me for birth look-ups. I don't do these. Good Hunting, Best Regards, Happy Happy..... Patti
Hi Dee (and everyone else) The Harrison Co website is http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvharris/ It has a very good search engine which you can use to scan all the data on the site. If you enter first and last names into the search engine, be sure to check the box which says " Exact phrase." Cathy Leonard has done an outstanding job as coordinator and there is a tremendous amount of info on it. The Harrison Co Genealogy Society has published some very valuable Cemetery books but some of the Districts are missing. Eventually, we hope to put a lot of the missing cemetery readings online so you need to check it occasionally to see if anything new has been added. Also included on the Harrison Co website is a listing of Districts and the towns within them, a listing of the query volunteers for Harrison Co, and more. If anyone has data which they would like to share with other Harrison Co researchers, you can send it to Cathy. Enjoy! Dear List, I've come across a nice little puzzle and I hope that someone has the answer to it. In the 1880 Harrison Co Census, Henry Sprout is listed as age 51 years born PA, living in Eagle District with wife Emily J, age 40. Living with Henry and Emily J is Martha Harbert. She is listed as sister-in-law, age 60 and single. This implies that Emily J was a sister to Martha, and a Harbert. There is no marriage record for Henry and Emily J in the Harrison Co marriage books. Since their first documented child was born in 1853, it could be assumed that they married sometime before that year. Does anyone know the maiden name of Emily J, wife of Henry Sprout? Was she a Harbert and sister to Martha, and if so, who were their parents? Thanks so much for any help. Mariana
Dear List, Cathy has put the first part of the Enterprise, Clay District, Cemetery on the Harrison Co page. Containing abt 204 names, this is the first of 4 parts for a total of 784 marked graves. The listing is under " Newly Submitted Records." Mariana
Dear Friends, I have just read and signed the online petition: "Save Ohio's Civil War Battlefield : Buffington Island " hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition service, at: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/Buff/ I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might agree, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider signing yourself. Best wishes, Paul Pettit

If there is anyone out there willing to do lookups, I need a Divorce Record for James R., Hymes and Oma I. Richards sometime between 1921 and 1926, in Harrison Co.. Thanks in advance Nancy
Dear Marguerite: Nice to hear from you on the Patton name. Based on your email, I am not sure we are talking about the same Patton family.....but, with the name Patton you just never know. The Pattons that gave land for the Middleville Church and cemetery were descendants of Francis Patton b1742 in wife Ruth Parke. There is a Patton Knob near by. Having said that, there is also a current place called the Patton farm not far from the Church. I talked to a lady of that Patton family and we determined it was a different family. Not sure how long that farm has been in that Patton family. I have done a lot of looking for my Pattons before they came to Harrison Co and there are differences of opinions as to just where they were from. I think I am aware of the other Pattons of Harrison Co because I have collected info on them too and have tried to identify every Patton in early Harrison Co records. Must tell you....I am sure that all the Pattons from the old country got together before they came to America and decided, 1. they would name their kids the same and 2. they would make sure that ALL of them passed thru the same counties before moving on to a final destination. I usually work on them for awhile and quit in frustration. Will be glad to talk with you about any Pattons that were in Harrison Co. Lyle Corder Bridgeport, WV
Lyle, my husband said that Richard Patton and he were friends many years ago as my husband raised Charolais Cattle. Dear Jackie: To the best of my knowledge you would have to go to or write to the Taylor Co Courthouse in Grafton to get this info. I have books on marriages in Taylor Co but they only go to1905. I do not know if the clerks in Taylor will help you by mail or not. Someone on the Taylor Co list might know....Lyle
Lyle, I just saw your note about the Middleville Cemetery, and noticed your comment that the Pattons were your Ancestors. They are also my Ancestors, as Robert Patton, Jr., s/o Robert Patton & Helen Douglas; married Ann Clifton "Nancy" Reeder, d/o Benjamin Franklin Reeder & Eleanor Clifton Slaughter on Sept. 2, 1805 in Alexandria, VA. Ann Clifton "Nancy" Reeder is the sister of my 3rd gr-grandfather, Thomas S. Reeder who married Eliza S. Shinn, d/o the famous Rev. Asa Shinn. I have separate files on the Patton, Clifton and Slaughter families and would love to compare information with you. My husband & I are coming to Shinnston on Thursday, there is an old Reeder cemetery there I would like to find; and I also want to see if any of the stonework for the old bridge is still there. My gr-grandfather, William Delbridge did the stonework for the bridge about 1875/76; and it was destroyed in 1888 by a flood. If you are interested in comparing any information, please contact me. Yours, Marguerite Delbridge Howard
