    3. Cathy, Does your book show a marriage for Nathan McDonald(or McDaniel) who married Harriet (Maulder we believe). It would have taken place in about 1836, perhaps in Tyler or Monongalia Counties. They were from the Fayette Co, PA, area but showed up on the Tyler Co, VA, census in 1840 and lived the rest of their lives in WV. Any other McDonalds, McDaniels, Fincham, Maulder or Maullers would be of interest. Sounds like your book has helped many people. You're a saint Cathy. Thanks, John McDonald Murray, KY (formerly of OH & WV)

    1. Re: [WVHARRIS] Sommerville family
    2. Judy, I don't have any info on Elizabeth Lynch. I have seen the spelling of the ship they sailed on as Debores. Would you be willing to share your Margaret Somerville line? This info comes from a researcher in Lost Creek, WV. History of the Sommerville Family The Somerville of Wirt and surrounding counties are of Irish extraction, though it is known that people of that name were natives, not only of Ireland, but of England and Scotland, long before the Irish Sommervilles migrated to America. In Ireland and England at an early date they were of the title class. The progenitor of the family in this county, and the first of whom we have any direct knowledge was one Solomon Somerville, who lived in the county Donegal, Ireland. The date of his birth and information relative to his family are lacking, except for his children who came to America. Sailed to America in 1795 Three sons, James, Samuel and Robert, or Andrew (of whom we have no record) accompanied by one sister, Elizabeth, who was already wed to John Burnsides before leaving Ireland, also the parents of Mr. Burnsides were among the immigrant party. They set sail about, April 6, 1795, on the ship Debores. The voyage covered a period thirteen weeks on the water. They landed on the 6th or 7th of July of the same year. The plan of their landing is not definitely known. But, considering the topography of the country, and the route of travel westward, the place of settlement, which was in western Virginia, and that some of the Burnsides settled in Rockingham County, Virginia it is more than likely that they landed somewhere on the coast of Virginia. It was just below the mouth of Hackers Creek, now the Good Hope community, on the West Fork River in Harrison County, Virginia that these people chose for a home site. It was there that James Sommerville and the Burnside family purchased land consisting of several hundred acres of John Ellsworth and others. Elizabeth Sommerville Burnside died June 22, 1861, age unknown. She and her husband have many descendants living in Ritchie, Harrison and Lewis Counties. James Sommerville Born in Ireland James Sommerville was born in Ireland, March 22, 1752, and died July 2, 1821. The maiden name of his wife is believed to be Lynch. He and his wife are buried in the family cemetery where the old pioneer Bethel church was located near Good Hope. James had three sons, Andrew and James were born in Ireland. Andrew was nine years old and James was only a few months old at the time of their departure. Robert, the youngest, was born May 1, 1800, at Good Hope, Harrison County. He married Mary Ward. In 1844, he and his family moved to Auburn, Ritchie County. Their children were James, Martin, Franklin, John, Sarah, Margaret, Drusila, and Nancy. Robert Sommerville, father of this family and a son of James, a native of Ireland, died June 19, 1871. Many of his descendants still reside in Ritchie County. James Sommerville, son of James, as previously stated, was born in Ireland February 2, 1795. He married Elizabeth Post, of a pioneer family of Harrison County, and like his father James, resided there the remainder of his life. He died April 7, 1873, his wife in 1881. The were the parents of the following children, Jacob, William, Soloman, Phoebe, Mary, Edith, Anne, Jane and Margaret. Myrt MSmith2313@aol.com

    3. Hi Judy, I really feel bad abt this. I checked my WV map (I live in CA) for Gladen and couldn't find it. It must be a really small town. Williamsburg, according to the map, is in Greenbriar and Smithfield is in Doddridge. The problem is that I don't have any books for those counties. By 1900, most Census books are divided by Districts, because of population growth. So I always try to find the District so I know where to begin looking. I have a limited number of 1920 District Census books for Harrison and only 2 for Wetzel. Do you have any idea where Gladen is? Actually, because we are talking abt recent people, that makes it very difficult. As you know, the most recently census is 1920. The only way I can think of finding Harry would be the Social Security Death Index, if he lived long enough to have a SS number. It would mean searching the Index for any Harry Sutton born on his birth date and then writing for his application. Most applications had parent's names on them. Then you could trace him back through the employer listed on the application. I had a cousin who did this and she was finally able to locate her grandfather who disappeared in 1950. In that case, he went out to the store and never came back. If you don't have access to the SSDI, let me know and I'll check for you. I would need his birth date but since he was a twin, you are lucky in knowing that. I'm so sorry I can't help you-- again! I hated having to tell people that!
