    3. Hello--- Since my Post Office is Rio, I live in Rock Oak on Mt. Olive Road, I know the area very well. As far as the name Rio---Folks have told me it was called North River. Sometime within a few years either side of WWII (i can't remember precisely) the US Postal Service wanted to shorten the lengthy names of some of the post offices, especially those that weren't single words and they held a contest. Someone put in "Rio" because it was short and contained the "river" meaning. At least that is what I have been told by those who were old enough to have been adults at the time. Sorry, it isn't as colorful as your theory, Mark. It sounds a lot better to suppose it had some commemoration of S-A War and Teddy Roosevelt----but the truth is just not as exciting.... : ) Terry Mark See wrote: > Yes Sue, I am here. > I always wondered where Rio got it's name (usually pronounced RYE-Oh). > I always thought that it might be a post Mexican War Thing. > > It is North - North East of Baker on Highway 29 along the Hardy/Hampshire Border.
