Re: Rio as a place name. A 1926 topological map uses the name Rio. In "Stray Recollections of a Private in Co. C., 7th Virginia Cavalry," written in 1900 by a pseudonymous "Rex," published in The History of Edinburg, Va., and reprinted by Mary Ann Williamson in "Union Forge, Shenandoah County, Virginia" "Rex" wrote: "At night about midnight we sought a place to rest, two miles south of Rio, and put up at the house of Mr. Wise...." A list of place names at the web site of W. Va. Division of Culture and History lists Rio, Hampshire Co., with a date of 1881. Jim Funkhouser
