    3. Roland, Yes, I am familiar with the practice. Although, I guess that I did not realize that they were doing it up to WW1. Many Irish were so brought to the US for that purpose during the War Between the States. When captured they often chose to fight for the "enemy" rather than go to prison and were referred to as "Galvanized" Confederates. Some Confederates did the same thing, but they were only allocated to fighting Indians on the frontier. But, I digress.
