    3. attn: sue wilson. while perusing my recent notes from trip to moorefield i hit a bingo for us, sue, perhaps? know how you experience that genealogical serendipity? copied a marriage record because it had name druilla tharp. then thought "my druilla is a hulver". but she married a tharp!!!!!!!!! and get this, sue, the marriage was her son, james, to jane hulver. well while looking over old notes from billy kohne's day books i noted that james is brother to lydia and suspect that is the lydia you mentioned in an old email to me. hopefully we can prove the connection now between our wilsons, isaac and your hayden. perhaps barbara wilson is not their sister. (would have sent this to you but unfortunately the email i brought with me is to this hardy site and not yours.) john, in email from jun 30, you listed jac. and barb. tetes' children: per billy kohne's day books, susan is eldest. show no annette but you show no lavila viola which i have as child #10. you show saviatte where i have a sarah born #7. george should be geo. washington child #4 whose obit in winchester, va. says he was well known civil war soldier. then show david and jehu. john, then mary called etta as child 3, laban wilson is child 2, jacob child #9, and virginia as youngest of 11 living with another born unnamed in 1860 per birth records at moorefield. not real clear on order of david and jehu and it has been long time since saw these day books. do not know if this will help. s susan laban wilson (mary) etta george washington david sarah jehu john jacob (lavila) viola virginia unnamed born 1860 _________________________________________________________________ Check the weather nationwide with MSN Search: Try it now! http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=weather&FORM=WLMTAG

    3. I want to thank everyone who replied to my query on Elizabeth Massey / Wilson m. George Stump. I apologize for the late delay in responding as the activities of my grandchildren overtook the generations of the past in priority. I encourage everyone to keep hope that we will find clues to unravel the story of our ancestors. After years and years of research I found renewed interest in genealogy at my mothers family reunion. We are recruiting new generations of computer savy researchers! Now that I know some of the Wilson went to Greene Co TN I can start looking there for clues as well. Thank you all! 3. Donna: You wrote a message awhile back on John and Susannah Wilson. There must be two families of John and Susannah Wilson. My husband's 3x great grandparents John and Susannah, didn't go to Tennesee from what I can determine. (or Did your John and Susannah come back to Hardy County?) John died in Hardy County in 1847. I thought our Susannah's maiden name was Couchman. (I will have to look at my files again). Your John was born ca 1761. If it is the same John, he would have been 86 when he died. After John's death, she married his brother, Cranmore Wilson. Those of us researching this family has decided that John's father was Henry Wilson who shows up in the records of Hardy County in the 1770's. Henry's will shows sons: John and Cranmore. I haven't been able to get Henry back further. His wife was Martha, according to his will. There are 4 listings for a marriage of Henry Wilson and a Martha Stewart in the IGI - in the Pennsylvania area but I have never had time to pursue these. Someone else had the John and Susannah family that went to Tennessee. Was that you, Sue Dietz? Wilson is such a common name as is John. I also run into a John Wilson problem with my husband's great-grandfather and his Civil War service. They have his birthdate wrong it appears because everything else including an article from Elkins is our John. I will be interested to see what you have. Sue Wilson

    2. Wow. Familiar names. You are all still there. I am planning a genealogy trip this fall to Hardy County. My most recent relative was born there in 1794, Jane Magill Shobe. Her mother was a Welton and her grandfather was Job Welton m. Mary McQuire. Other than the Looney's Creek area, I want to trace Mary's parents who are buried in Hampshire County (which may now be Hardy). Any suggestions about who to see and where to go would be most welcome. I want to stick my toe in the Potomac, take pictures, gather leaves for nieces and nephews not yet interested in ancestors and get as much information as I can. Someone has suggested that I can learn just as much by staying home and searching the Internet. Thanks, Anne Blocker

    3. Hello--- Since my Post Office is Rio, I live in Rock Oak on Mt. Olive Road, I know the area very well. As far as the name Rio---Folks have told me it was called North River. Sometime within a few years either side of WWII (i can't remember precisely) the US Postal Service wanted to shorten the lengthy names of some of the post offices, especially those that weren't single words and they held a contest. Someone put in "Rio" because it was short and contained the "river" meaning. At least that is what I have been told by those who were old enough to have been adults at the time. Sorry, it isn't as colorful as your theory, Mark. It sounds a lot better to suppose it had some commemoration of S-A War and Teddy Roosevelt----but the truth is just not as exciting.... : ) Terry Mark See wrote: > Yes Sue, I am here. > I always wondered where Rio got it's name (usually pronounced RYE-Oh). > I always thought that it might be a post Mexican War Thing. > > It is North - North East of Baker on Highway 29 along the Hardy/Hampshire Border. 2. Hello, Thanks for the info... I found on rootsweb.com that Elsie M. Combs Strawderman died on 2/9/1995 in Stafford, VA. I do believe that this is the Elsie that I was looking for because according to the death records she was born on 7/4/1911 and I do show her in the Hardy County, WV 1920 Census as being 8 years old. I do not know if she has any children. I also searched for Frances "Lee" Combs Souders but I think that she still may be out there. I am not sure when she was born but I know she was not in the Hardy County, WV 1920 Census. She may have been born in 1920 though. I do show that a Frances Lee Combs married a Whismer Jones/James? in 1937 and th at this Frances Lee Combs was 17. I found out that she married Waldo Souders and their child Evelyn Souders was shortly married to a Boyd Milstead in Harrisonburg, VA around 1968. I guess I will have to look for Evelyn Souders Milstead. Haman, Elsie, & Frances also had a brother Naman Combs. Naman married Coda Mae Ritchie and they had Irene who married a Sandridge. Their mother, Sallie Rose/Rosetta Miller...(she is also found as Sarah) daughter of George & Elizabeth M. Miller, she was born 2/23/1885 in Hardy County, WV. In 1901 she married Samuel Tusing, son of Jacob and Betty Ann Tusing. (Samuel may have died because I can't find him after this). In 1905 she married Robert James Combs, son of Absalom and Mary Corbin Combs. Robert died in 1931. He was much older than Sallie. In 1931 she married Isaac Teets, son of Laban W and Virginia Teets. Sallie Teets died in 1968 and is buried in Woodbine Cemetary, Harrisonburg, VA, Rockingham County. I have a letter from the WV Division of Culture and History that even says that! When I wrote back to them, they admitted the error. We don't worry about the spelling - it wasn't precise in those days. Also seeking John Shepherd who died in 1726 and left children named John, Nathan and William in Frederick County. Finally, Who was the Thomas Shepherd who was in Hampshire County in 1777? Will share what I have with interested persons. Thanks. Best regards, David Armstrong, Elkins, WV

    3. Hi I am new to the list and hope someone has an idea. I am at the proverbial "brick wall". My ancestor, John Brown and sons James and Robert moved from Cumberland County, PA to Hardy County between 1758 and 1774. Robert is documented as being a planter in Hampshire County (Hardy) in 1781 and then dies there about 1786. There is apparently NO RECORD of the estate. Further, the father, John, is reported by withers (identified by default) as having went to Buckhannon with the Pringles but keeping to the woods and hunting to supply the settlements with meat, not taking up any land. There is NO direct evidence of John Sr. until his listing in the Harrison Co tax lists of 1785. Given this and the fact that I can document the existence of other hunter types of the period I have theorized that he may have been in the woods a LOT and never around when there was a tax list made, an estate sale, or any other such thing that would generate a record of him. I went to Cumberland County several times and collected everything I can get on any Brown up there before 1760. Having found no obvious connection I am left to shoot for an ID by association. So... I would be interested in knowing about ANYONE who moved from Cumberland County, PA to Hampshire or Hardy County 1756 - 1774. Also, given the absence of an estate record for Robert and any evidence of John during the period I also have entertained the possibility that they could have been somewhere else when Robert died in 1786. So any record one might run across that would show the death of a Robert Brown circa 1785 in the SW PA, Western VA, Western MD area would be something I would like to know about. Thanks to everyone in advance. Best regards, David Armstrong, Elkins, WV
