On my question to Robert--- Sorry----I didn't change the subject line. Thanks, Donna I will add my 2 cents on this subject. Fertilizer or lack of it was another reason to search out new ground. After 3-4 years of farming a piece of ground it was worn out as the people of that period would say . So the lure of new and fertile ground in distance places was enough for these people to move in hopes of a better life. Plus land grants Mine migrates to east Tn. --- avast! The Philip Yoakum who married Elizabeth Mumbert is the son of Philip Yoakum and Elizabeth Harness. "Eileen Dove found on page 34 of Sites History, "Sometime after Magdalena' death, Jacob Detrick m. second to Elizabeth (Mumbert) Yoakum, born ca. 1787-95." Hardy Co. Marriage Records show on 1 Nov 1838 Philip P. Yokum m. (this third wife) Elizabeth Mumbert . Hardy Co. Deed Book 23, page 403 is deed from Gabriel Mumbert to George Yoakum 23 Jan 1854 'all interest which Elizabeth Dietrick, formerly Elizabeth Yoakum, had in the lands of her husband, Philip Yoakum, deceased, which said Elizabeth Yoakum had conveyed to Gabriel Mumbert by deed in Oct . 1850.' This is interpreted to mean that Philip's third wife was Elizabeth Mumbert, married 1 Nov 1838, who married a Dietrick after Philip died." Thanks for sharing the websites. I thought maybe you'd like a little additional info related to Virginia and West Virginia. According to Stephen Longnecker's book Shenandoah Religion: Outsiders and the Mainstream, 1716-1865, the Dunkers migrated to the Shenandoah Valley from Pennsylvania in the 1750's. "In 1788 Valley Dunkers had grown enough that church leaders needed to draw a line at Market Street in Harrisonburg, to divide the fellowship into northern and southern districts for administrative purposes..." Let's be a little more patient and work it out, rather than just saying it is all screwed up. There were a number of people with the same names; Dorothy Harness and George Renick are just two examples. Many people of that day did not know how to read or write and there were numerous different spellings for the same name. I have seen several spellings of Michael Harness's wife's maiden name -- Jephebeloy, Jepebo, Jephebe, Zephebe. I do know for a fact that my 3g-grandmother was Dorothy Harness, wife of George Renick and their graves are in Chillicothe, Ohio. They did marry in 1802 in Moorefield and she died in 1820. Her father was George Harness, Sr., his will was written on January 6, 1815 and proven in Hardy County on May 13, 1823. The will is at the Pickaway County Historical Society in Circleville, Ohio. He left his son-in-law George Renick and his daughter Dorothy five hundred pounds. His will is signed with his mark, so presumably he did not know how to write. I visited Olivet Cemetery and saw the tombstones of George Harness, Sr. and his wife Elizabeth. I have always been more interested in the Renick family since they were in Ohio. As for the rest of the Harness family, I don't know much. I did attend a Harness Farm celebration in Chillicothe. At the time, their farm had been in the Harness family continuously from 1798 to 1998. Their ancestor George Harness (born 1759, married to Rebecca Casey) bought the approximately 1600 acre property at auction; the deed is dated July 18, 1798 and was signed by Thomas Jefferson (president) and James Madison (secretary of state). Perhaps, since the geneology I got from Moorefield library is incorrect, someone would share their version. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roland Elliott" <rolandelliott@inreach.com> To: <wvhardy@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 02, 2006 10:21 PM Subject: Re: [WVHARDY] Dorothy Harness, George Renick > Screwed up to far to correct.Dorothy was the First White girl born in > Hampshire/Hardy county to Michael and Elizabeth 1741 she married Samuel > Hornbeck.Philip Youkum married Elizabeth Harness 1750 she was born 1727 in > PA or MD and died 1894 in Hampshire she and he are buried in Pansy Cem. > Petersburg. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Barbara Renick" <brenick@columbus.rr.com> > To: <wvhardy@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, October 02, 2006 6:57 PM > Subject: Re: [WVHARDY] Dorothy Harness, George Renick > > >>I have the following, taken from a geneology chart at the Moorefield >>library. >> 1 Michael Harness >> sp Elizabeth Jasper >> 2 Peter Harness >> sp Barbara Devries >> 3 Michael Harness (Jan 1700 - 3 Mar 1783) born in York County, Pa. >> His will was probated 8 Mar 1785 >> sp Elizabeth Tepebo (Jephebe/Westfall) (c 1706) >> 4 John Harness (1725) >> 4 Elizabeth Harness >> 4 Jacob Harness (died in infancy) >> 4 Barbara (Rebecca) Harness >> 4 Conrad Harness >> 4 Adam Harness >> 4 Leonard Harness >> 4 George Harness Sr. (2 January 1739 or 40 - 7 Apr 1823) born >> Hardy >> Co. The Dorothy Harness (Aug 27, 1802-Dec 5, 1820) who married George Renick was the daughter of George Harness=Elizabeth Ann Yoacum. This George Harness was the son of Michael and Maria. Elizabeth was the daughter of George Yoakum + Elizabeth Vanderpool. George M. Williams

There is another Davis book: William Davis Family, "A short sketch of the ancestry of William Davis and the records of his lineage and a brother, Samuel Davis" by Lillian Virginia (Ludwig) Davis, wife of Harold Davis, his grandson published in 1972 by her printed by Commercial Press, Stephens City, VA My co-worker had this book and I borrowed it a few years ago to look for any of my family names. I am not related to any Davis's (that I can find). I copied just a few pages so I will give only the information that I have... John R. Davis died 1859 born about 1783 buried in the Old Dunlap Graveyard near Lehew, WV. John and wife (unknown) was the father of Samuel, Susan, and William Davis. They settled in Dillons Run, VA, now WV. Samuel Davis born 5/19/1811 married Maria Switzer, later changed to Swisher. They had twelve children. (*I do not have their children's names on my copies)but the book says some of his children are listed at the end of the book. Susan Davis born Sept.,1812 married William McCoy and lived near Winchester, VA. It says that Susan lived to be 105 years old! Their children were Hugh, William, Ellen McCoy who married a Anderson. William Davis -The book lists his decendants. Please see the book for any other information. Please note - I do not know if you can find or even buy this book. I just borrowed it from my co-worker a few years ago. The above information is all that I have. I went through the book and looked for any of my ancesters names and made only a few copies of pages that have the names that I need. Hope this helps! I am researching my family which are COMBS, MILLER, HEVNER, HAINES, PAYNE, DUNLAP, & more! Thanks, Rachel
