    3. Yes, that is a very nice library and they are building up a genealogy section and we left our family history book there and they also wanted to pdf CD-R in case anyone wanted a copy so they are with current technology. It never hurts to send a few dollars along for I doubt if it is a prosperous area to draw funds from. The new East-West Robert C. Byrd Highway is limited access four lane coming over from the Virginias Line South of Strasburg, etc. and you can almost buzz all the way into town. Hmmmm, I wonder who it is named for? 3. WV has put online various birth, marriage and death records for each of the 55 counties. Hardy county is one of the few that have all the records digitized and available online. I do not know who is responsible for the indexing and digitizing the records, but whoever did Hardy county deserves kudos as it is complete. Use the following link to search the records. The search engine supports wild cards for single letters as well as strings. So it is possible to do one search to find all the varying spellings of a name. The results are available to dump to a printer. The resulting printout is as if you visited personally and received a copy of the certificate. http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.aspx

    3. Hi I see that the Hardy Co., cemeteries have been indexed. I would very much like to know if there any James Brooks listed or any Brooks of any name. I have visited the Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield and found a headstone for Matilda Brooks wife of James. I also found a stone for Edward Steen, son of John Steen and wonder if there is any information on this family. It is right near Matilda's headstone. I would also like to know if there is any marriage records that may have the above people in them. John Jacob Steen married Martha Welton Brooks, daughter of James and Matilda. John Jacob Steen was married 1st to another lady who died in childbirth. I hope that I have not asked too many questions. Thanks Florence Denning

    3. Middle Peninsula Genealogy Group to Discuss Freedmen's Bureau Indexing Project Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine announced on October 26, 2006, that Virginia will be the first state in the nation to participate in an historic extraction and indexing project focused on the preservation of the Freedmen's Bureau records. The Freedmen's Bureau, which operated from 1865 to 1872, was a federal agency that provided assistance and relief to newly freed African Americans. Governor Kaine said that "The Freedmen's Bureau records are effectively the "genesis records" of African-American identity post Civil War. They provide the earliest major compilation of information on the African- American community, documenting for the period 1865-1872 names, legalized marriages, educational pursuits, work contracts, and receipt of rations, healthcare, legal, and other services." The Bureau's records, which are housed at the National Archives and Records Administration, have now been digitized, and will be extracted and indexed to make them accessible to researchers. Representatives of the Virginia Freedmen Extraction and Indexing Project will speak at the monthly meeting of the Middle Peninsula African-American Genealogical and Historical Society of Virginia (MPAAGHS) on Saturday, February 10, 2007, at 11:00 a.m . at the Essex County Public Library, 117 North Church Lane (Rt. 17), Tappahannock, Virginia. They will talk about these promised developments in African-American family history research and how persons can become personally involved in this historic effort. Volunteers are needed for the extraction and indexing of the Virginia Freedmen's Bureau records.
