I found a file on the Hardy County page which listed the Postmasters in Hardy County in 1851. One of them was James D. Boone, Postmaster of the Baker's Run Post Office. In the March-April 1999 issue of Genealogical Helper, there is a tip about finding the names of Postmasters. There are two films available through the National Archives that list them: M1131 Record of Appointment of Postmasters, Oct. 1789-1832 M841 Record of Appointment of Postmasters, 1832 - Sept 30, 1971 It's the latter I'm interested in. It's arranged alphabetically by state, county, and name of Post Office, then gives a list of names of Postmasters and their dates of service. If anyone has access to this film, I would appreciate very much getting a copy of the entries for the Baker's Run Post Office. I'm hoping to find out how long James Boone was there, which might give me a clue about where he disappeared to! Thanks very much. Dear folks--- I found a plat, dated 1769, involving several lots in the area of Sawmill Run/The Trough near the Hardy/Hampshire line. The lots were owned by the Wharton brothers of Philadelphia but have Samuel Dew's house on one of the lots. The plat could not be copied in one image, so it is completed in three separate images. I have zipped the JPEGs with a brief narrative document explaining the background of the plat. The total size is 545K. If anyone is interested in receiving them, please email me as listed above, and I'll email the zipped file. Hopefully, Margaret will be able to get the same documents up on the Hardy County site, but in the meantime, they are available upon request. I will also soon have ready a zipped file containing a plat in the Lunice (Looneys) Creek area of present Grant County, but formerly Hardy. It also is dated 1769. Both plats have names of adjoining owners. These plats were found in an unexpected place---the Papers of Adam Stephen on microfilm in the Library of Congress, so it is doubtful that these plats have come to anyone's attention before now. Hi Smitty: I have just begun to research the Couchman's also. In the book "Hampshire and Hardy Counties, (W) Va Abstract" by Larry G. Shuck {a great book if you don't have it yet} it shows a Susannah [nee Couchman] who marries John Wilson (our ancestor). Page 155 notes that on 15 Feb 1797; Daniel TEVEBOUGH and wife Susanna TEVEBough to William Cunningham, 59 acres for 50 lbs. adj to the Manor line and Daniel McNeill. pg. 41 shows a debt to Susanna Couchman. Henry Couchman must have died about 1795 from the notes in the book about his bequeaths to his children. I don't have much on them yet. Good luck, Sue Wilson
> Anyone have any relationship with the Tevebaughs? I thought I had seen that name. I had my Catherine Jane Neff was married to George Neff moved from Hardy Co to Vermilion Co.IL...Catherine's sister was married to Geroge Tevebaugh son of Daniel Tevebaugh. Another sister Priscilla Neff was married to James McVican. Now I have found both names--Tevebaugh and McVican(or variations) in Vermilion Co. connected to my Stumps, Neffs and Wilsons even in later generations. So something is going on. Also check out the name Tevebaugh on the LDS site. It even mentions a Amarella P. Tevebaugh born 1847 in Hardy Co VA then she is maried to James K Polk Smoot Nov 4 1864 in Vermilion Co. IL. Her parents were Geroge William Tevebaugh and mother Mary Elizabeth Neff. Then I have Jacob C. Tevebaugh born 1856 right in Pilot Twp. Vermilion Co. IL. That is exactly the township of my group. Then we have this from Hardy Co. VA: Will Book 10 p 502. Will of Abraham Neff Died 1860. Mentions 5 shares. Mentions est of Margaret Neff, deceased share of decedent in the estate of the said Margaret Neff dec, Recd 26 Apr 1860. (Abraham's share in his mother's estate. Margaret was wife of Jacob Neff) 1/5"Abraham Neff, decd in account with George Stump who in sight of his wife Catherine, late Catherine Neff, is one of the distributees of the said Abraham Neff decd." 1/5"Admin of Abraham Neff, decd, in account with George Tevebaugh who in sight of his wife, Elizabeth Ann, late Elizabeth Ann Neff is one of the distibutees of Said Abraham Neff, decd." 1/5" To Jacob S. Neff" 1/5 "The same in account with James McVicon, who is in sight of his wife Pricilla another distributee of said decedent" 1/5 to son John Neff's, deceased, estate, late of Franklin Co, Ohio to be in account with James A. Neff, a son of John Neff The remaining 4/5 of the said John Neff's fifth part of the said estate is due to the 4 infant children of the said John Neff, who reside in Pike, ILL to wit: Jacob S Neff Elizabeth J. Neff Clarissa J Neff Caroline V. Neff .... and find that George Stump a distributee in sight of his wife has been paid off in full, that to George G Tevebaugh, James Mc Vican, and Jacob S. Neff there are balances of $2.09 due each. That there is a balance of $.36 due to James A Neff, a son of John Neff, dec'd and there is due to the other 4 children of the said John Neff decd the sum of $27.69 each all to bear interest from the 2nd day of May 1860. What do you think? Diana in AK

Hi folks: I just received some information that connects my husband's 3rd great-grandfather, JOHN WILSON with SUSANNAH COUCHMAN, daughter of HENRY COUCHMAN of Hardy Co., WV. Susan is reported to have married CRANMER WILSON after John's death in 1847. Is anyone researching the Couchman line and know anything about their background? Does anyone have Judy's book and could look up a will for Henry Couchman? I have information that indicates it was in 1795 or 6. Thanks for all help! Sue Wilson
Wonderful West Virginia Magazine Apr 1988 pg 20-27 "The Hatfields & McCoys" by Nancy Clark photo credits: courtesy of Osa Browning & Arnout Hyde Jr. OSA BROWNING remembers her grandfather as a gentle man who told her in his final minutes in 1921 that he had never killed anyone. Well, during the Civil War as a Confederate home guard he thought he may have killed a man named JIM PHILLIPS who was fighting for the Union. There were a lot of shots fired so he wasn't sure. ANDERSON HATFIELD, aka "Devil Anse" was the patriarch of the Hatfield Family. of Logan & Mingo Co. They were the mountain clan which carried on the famous bloody feud with the McCoy family of KY in 1882=88. Devil refers to Devil's Knob, W.V. where he was Capt in Conf. army. This article has surnames of: JIM VANCE a Hatfield relative & member of the Logan Wildcats, Confederate militia founded by Devil Anse. HARMON MC COY leader of a Union home guard unit. ANDERSON "DEVIL ANSE" HATFIELD lived with wife and 13 children at what is now Delorme on the West Virginia side of the Tug River, 5 miles above Matewin in now MingoCo. (At the time it was Logan Co). RANDOLPH "RANDALL" MCCOY, his wife & 13 ch lived across the Tug in Pike Co, KY As one story goes, The McCoys let their razerback hogs run loose. In 1873 a McCoy was visiting a Hatfield and saw one of his pigs in the other family's pen. There was a hearing held and 6 jurors from each family. A McCoy juror who was married to a Hatfield voted with his wife's family. Within a few weeks that juror was found with his head blown off. Later that day a McCoy was mysteriously wounded when he was shot in the hip. There was another version of the story but after this both families started carrying guns and travelng in groups. ABout 1880 Devil Anse's son JOHNSE & Randall McCoy's daughter ROSEANNA wanted to marry but their families said no.. Thus the beginning of the active feuding 2 years later. In Aug 1882 Devil Anse's brother ELLISON was said to have made a remark about Roseanna & announced she was pregnant. By then the Hatfield-McCoy lovers had ended their affair but it was true that Roseanna was carrying Johnse's child. Hearing their sister's name disgraced in public by a Hatfield was too much for DICK, FLOYD, & TOLBERT MC COY. The 3 brothers shot and stabbed ELLISON HATFIELD and he died 2 days later. The following morning the 3 McCoy brothers were found tied to trees & shot to death. It was said anywhere from 27 to 100 were killed in the time of feuding during the worst years 1882-88. WV Gov. EMMANUEL W. WILSON & KY GOV. SIMON B. BUCKNER alerted their militias. FRANK PHILLIPS (who had married a McCoy girl) was deputized by Gov. Buckner and charged with ending the feud. Phillips organized a posse, crossed the Tug, brought some Harfields back to the Pike Co jail. The WV Gov. asked the KY Gov to release the men; the request denied. Gov Wilson fought for release of the Hatfields through the legal system, and the case went to the U. S.Supreme Court which upheld the lower courts' decisions in favor of KY. Hatfields and McCoys were then tried in both states for various crimes and among them, ELLISON MOUNTS an illegitimate son of ELLISON HATFIELD. Mounts was hanged in 1889 by the State of KY for the murder of ALLIFAIR MCCOY. Some say Mounts was innocent and that CAP HATFIELD, (Devil's son) had killed RANDALL MC COY's daughter ALLIFAIR. This feud gradually subsided. RANDALL MC COY died age 88 in 1914. Roseanna McCoy and Johnse Hatfield's little son died in infancy. Johnse reportedly moved to the state of Washington. Roseanna's fate is unknown. All the participants in the feud died long ago. Some of descendants still live in the valley but live/work congenially and some have even married each other. One hundred years after the bloodshed the feud exists in books and on the stage of Grandview State Park ampitheater where it is performed each summer in outdoor musical drama. ============================== This is a good stopping place for this series of WV Magazines. Wonderful West Virginia Magazine March 1988 pg 29-32 "Newburg Early Mining & Railroad Center" BY KENNETH L.CARVELL Photo credits: Gerald Ratliff, & B & O Museum Archives Newburg history and Baltimore & Ohio RR are closely related as Newburg was the railroad town that guarded the western end of the steep stretch of tracks from Kingwood Tunnel at Tunnelton, down thru the Cheat Gorge to Rowlesburg and up the 17 mi Salt Lick grade to Terra Alta. Before the railroad was extended into the Raccoon VAlley in S.W. Preston Co. settlement of that region was sparse. Only two houses in 1850 at present site of Newburg. This was referred to as Station 88 since it was 88 mi. west of Cumberland, Md. Later the B & O RR changed the name to Simpson's Water Station. Newburg incorporated in 1868 and it was a brand new town. The town prospered and the mining west of the Cheat was spectacular. The Pittsburgh and Freeport=Kittaning seams in the Newburg area were 9 to 10 ft thick, of highest quality and easy to mine. In 1853 coal prospector LAWRENCE HENRY came to Sand Hill just so. of Newburg and he founded the ORRELL COAL CO. which in the next 30 years produced 5 million tons of high quality coal. The name Sand Hill was changed to Scotch Hill since many of the early mining families came over from Scotland and settled there. The next 50 years the demand for railroad coal grew since the B&O RR linked the central & western areas of the US with the industries along the Atlantic seaboard. Other mines opened at Newburg: Hamilton Coal & Coke Co. Mountain Brook Coal Co. Mines at nearby Austen, Hiorra and Tunnelton. Newburg owed its existence to the need for east-bound trains to add a series of helper engines before climbing the steep grades in the Cheat Valley & up Salt Lick to Terra Alta. From Terra Alta east, there was mostly level plateau country through Oakland to Alta Mont before the sharp descent to Cumberland. East-bound trains reached Newburg they also had to take on coal & water before making the steep grade ascent. In early years there were train repair shops. Newburg was a town of many nationalities. Irishmen from Cork, Connaught, and Farndown. Due to the potato famine in Ireland Irish labor was available & the Irish were excellent workers. The Corkers and the Connaughtons disliked their co-workers from Farndown and one Saturday night the Farndowners fled to the woods only to be rescued by the Grafton sheriff who put a halt to the old-country feuds. Because of the large Irish population, St John's Roman Catholic Church was the first religious house of worship established in Newburg. There were many German families who came to the U.S. to work the mine, and settled in Newburg. Lutheran services were held as early as 1859 resulting in the active Holy Trinity Lutheran Congregation. Numerous English & Scotch immigrants worked on the r.r. in the mines. Methodist Protestant, Methodist Episcopal, and Presbyterian churches remained for years. In 1937 the Methodist congregations merged to form active United Methodist Church. During the Civil War Newburg grew rapidly. For over half a century it was the largest & most properous town in Preston Co. Greatest disaster in a Newburg mine was Jan 21, 1886 when 39 men and boys were killed in a mine shaft explosion at the Orrell Coal Co. Newburg had its own newspaper off / on. in 1880 "The Broad Ax" moved from Fellowsville to Newburg and was later renamed "The Newburg Enterprise" Although Newburg's grade school dates from 1860s the 4 yr H.S. wasn't built until 1913. The H.S. closed in 1977 merging with Valley HIgh School at Masontown to form West Preston High School. Independence a small rr community 1 mile west of Newburg was a major trading center for agricultural area. For years Independence (named for Independence Day) was noted for free watermelon days provided by the firm of HARTLEY & GUSKEY at summer's end. With the diesel engines on the scene in about 1953 the coal burning locomotives were suddenly no more and the town of Newburg lost many of their young to other industrial centers. It is now a quiet town. - ------------------------------------- Getting close to the last issue in my collection. Shirley Toohey
Does anyone know what churches were active in the Baker area of Hardy County in the 1850s & 1860s? The area I have in mind extends from Baker up to the Hampshire County line and Rio, WV. I also have the names of two ministers: D. W. Arnold and Thomas Cottrell. Arnold was a Methodist minister, I think. I don't know about Cottrell. Does anyone know more about these ministers? Wonderful West Virginia Magazine Mar 1988 pg 18-22 "CCC Days in W.VA" by John H. Woods Pictures of the camp by E.V. HOUSTON Article describes John H. Woods experiences at Cabwaylingo State Forest and the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) in 1935 until 1938 when his unit was transferred to Nevada. The young men worked for the state from 8 to 4 and the balance of time they were under the jurisdiction of the Army. Lived in barracks, ate in mess halls, roll call per Army regulations. Wore uniforms (olive drab for winter, khaki for summer and blue denim worksuits). They surveyed the state forest area and put up single wire fence around the boundary. There were fire fighting crews. They did brush removal, and counted game. The trees were counted. The men built a fire tower on Tick Ridge. He describes what he learned and how valuable the experience was. They learned discipline, were furnished their meals, clothing, medical and the training + $30. per month. In the 1930 that was good pay. $25 of the $30. was sent to the families so they had $5. to spend. In the late 30s the whole company was transferred to Moapa, NV. They worked uner the Division of Grazing. There is now a CCC Alumni group. There are thousands of members. Mr. Woods currently lives in Marshall, MO. MacCorkle) Charleston or Kanawha Court House (it was sometimes called) was on the banks of the Great Kanawha River, right in the part of the warring armies as they traveled around. The rich lands of Ohio lay to the north and west, and the Confederates wanted the salt works at Malden near Charleston. The Union forces realized the value of Kanawha Valley and sent troops up river from Pt.Pleasant and the first clash in the Charleston area was at Scary Creek near St.Albans on July 17, 1861 (138 years ago).. Although the Confederates claimed victory, after the battle they moved out of Charleston on July 24, 1861. Charleston remained in Federal hands til Sept 13, 1862, when Southern troops swept down from FAyetteville.. A short, hot battle ensued and Thomas JEFFRIES describes it...The rebels stayed 6 weeks before returning to the east & old Virginia. For the remainder of the war, Union forces were in firm control of the Kanawha Valley. Gov. MacCorkle's 1928 autobiography "The Recollections of 50 Years" describes the making of the road. While excavating 2 female bodies were found .. one blond, one brunette. No one seemed to know who they were. MacCorkle asked his friend, Capt JOHN SLACK who was a Union soldier, and knew more about the Kanawha Valley history than any other person of the time. He told about the Confederate troops encamped below MacCorkle's land on the river bank.. There were 2 women camp followers, whom they suspected of being Union spies. They had a drumhead court- martial, convicted the women and took them to the head of the hollow and shot them..there they were buried. This was done by the Confederates. Capt Slack was a REpublican, a Union Soldier and honest as could be and believed he made a correct statement. But later when a friend, JAMES PAULINE, was questioned he told an entirely opposite story. He was an old resident, and man of highest integrity, Democrat and a Confederate soldier. He claimed the Union Army was encamped on the river bank and the women were suspected of being Confederate spies. The Union Army had a drumhead court-martial, took the women up the hollow and shot, buried them there.!! Both honest men thought they had the correct story. But a man in Lincoln County who had been a Union soldier heard about MacCorkle's find (bones) and on his death bed told of being one of the squad who executed the women and it was a "burden to his mind." Perhaps there is a clue in the regimental history of the 11th OHio Volunteer Infantry Regiment: On the 30th day of July 1862, a female bushwacker was captured near Gauley, to guard whom, LUTHER SHEETS of Company A was detailed. The woman said the initials of her name was M.A. but that she was called HETTIE AMANDA JONES ATKINS. She loved whiskey and tobacco but had a most hearty hatred for the "Yankees". Could the women have been "bushwackers"? In the heat of battle could 2 tomboys have met their death at the hands of battle-hardened veterans? There is much historical evidence that women often served as spies in the Civil War. A 1936 book "Women of the Confederacy" writes of this. Belle BOYD a 17 year old girl from Martinsburg gained confidence of Union officers and extracted information of value to her Confederate friends. She was finally captured in July 1862, sent to Washington,D.C. and released after a month for lack of evidence. Another NANCY HART a Virginia mountaineer often led Stonewall JACKSON'S CAVALRY on raids upon Federal outposts. The Federals offered a reward for her. She was captured, but secured a gun and short her guard .. made her escape by horseback. A few days later she returend with over 200 Confederates and captured her former captors. In 1934 a book about Charleston history by GEORGE W. SUMMERS suggested the identities were known .. and kept secret to protect the women's Charleston families. ```````````````````````end````````````````````````
Unfortunately the Rohrbaugh Genealogy book does not follow the Cooper line. It dos reference Mary F. Rohrbaugh as a d/o of Christian Rohrbaugh and the Jonas Cooper was the witness of Johann Heinrich Rorhbaugh's will in Hardy County. Janet Cooper [email protected]
These are the children I have for Christian and Christina Carr Cooper 1. Mary Francis COOPER b. 15 Jul 1855 2. Martha Alice COOPER (b. 30 Mar 1857, d. 12 Aug 1939) md. Thomas Bright (b. 1855, d. 1944), md. 20 Aug 1874 3. Asa COOPER (b. 29 Mar 1858, d. 6 Oct 1931) md. Gettie Lee McDonald (b. 1864, d. 1955) md. 19 Jan 1884 4. Jasper YOKUM, b. 13 Jan 1868, d. 30 Jun 1956, md 22 Sep 1892 10. Jemima COOPER (10 Aug 1874, d. 7 Mar 1923) md. Floyd MCDONALD, (b. 1873, d. 6 Feb. 1938), md. 30 Nov 1883 Note: The discrepancies in the dates represent discrepancies between the two cemetery volumes for Randolph County (ARFHS and Chapman). I think the Valentine Cooper listed in the 1870 census in Christian's family may be George Washington Cooper. The dates are similar and I only find Valentine Cooper in the 1870 census. I have found three other daughters Anna, Amy and Jane Cooper. Amy and Jane are only listed in the AFRHS cemetery book as daughters of Christian Cooper. Anna's only reference so far is in the Harman Album by Carrie Harman Roy. I'm wondering if one of the daughters is really Emily. But I need to clarify these facts with other family members. Finally, John Adam Cooper (s/o Christian) never married as far as I can tell. John Wymer Cooper, s/o Samuel Cooper (b.10 Oct 1853 d. 26 Dec 1926) md Elmira McDonald (b. Jan 1858, d. 18 Nov 1936). They are buried in the Cooper Cemetery West of Harman. Janet Cooper [email protected]
