Frances, Thanks for the information on Greenland and I did check the pictures out. (Makes me homesick for the hills) Thanks again, Charlotte
Does anyone know if the Hardy County Genealogical Society has a web site? Also, what is their snail-mail address? Have they published indexes to early wills or deeds? Where can I find a list of their publications? [email protected]
Does anyone have any idea regarding the relationship of Anna Maria Hire to Valentine Cooper? He is mentioned several times in her will dates 16 Nov 1790 (Hardy county) along with her son Rudolph Hire. Janet Cooper [email protected]
Yes, this sounds very familiar. I have so many John Hawks I can hardly keep them straight. And I've been searching for parents of John and Martin for a long time with no success. I did find a John Houk and Martin Houk who came in to Philadelphia about 1772 (am unpacking and can't find anything right now). They arrived within a month of each other. But children of John said on 1880 census that parents were born in Virginia. So, still no luck. I'm reading my mail from the bottom up so may find more to respond to. Genie Hawk Holt

Hi Edie, Don't believe there is a connection to my line. I have a Benjamin Preston married a Mary Ethel Ashby in Greenbrier County. The information that I'm trying confirm would be on brothers John and Martin. Do believe there are maybe three lines of Hawks. One from Germany, one from England, and a Native American line. Isaac that came from England is the one that is in my line. The Hawk families named their children the same every generation so it is a nightmare trying to keep straight. Does any of this sound familiar? Charlotte
Thanks Mike! I'm trying to sort out information about the Hawk family in the area. Charlotte
Hi all, Does anyone know where an area called Greenland was located around the 1770's? Thanks, Charlotte

Dear Byron and Karen: Thanks for the offers to look thru your Richmond names. Here is what we know. (I am going to use the name Richmond but lots of variations were used in records). Brothers,Daniel, Jesse and Levi Richmond , all born about 1822 ended up in what is now Barbour Co, WV , some time before 1850-60. Actually they were in the little town of Nestorsville. When Jesse died, they told the county clerk that he was born in Hardy Co, WV which came from Hampshire Co in 1785. Hampshire Co came from Frederick Co, VA in 1753. In the 1850 census for Hardy Co, VA/WV we have a Daniel Righman age53 with wife Lydia. Levi Richmond is in the Barbour Co 1850 census. I cannot find Daniel and Jesse in 1850. Looking at the index for VA Census in 1850, I find lots of Richmonds in the area of Hardy Co....Berkeley, Hampshire Cos. So, we are stuck. Need to find the parents of the three brothers previously mentioned. Daniel and Lydia look like good candidates. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks....Lyle Corder
Looking for anyone researching the different spellings of this name in present day WV or VA. There are several Daniel Richmonds, Righmans and Richmons in these areas in the 1800s. Need some help sorting them out. I do know that a Levi, Jesse and Daniel ended up in what is now Barbour Co, WV. Help....Thanks...Lyle Corder
Hello Donna, Hardy County was formed in 1786 from Hampshire County, VA. Hampshire Co. was formed in 1754 frin Augusta and Frederick Counties. I don't know if you will be in the Charleston area or can find these elsewhere. Here are some books at the WV Archives Library, which you might find helpful: 1) HAMPSHIRE & HARDY COUNTIES, (W) VA ABSTRACTS, compiled by Larry G. Shuck, published by Closson Press. It has Hampshire Co. Wills (1780-1794) & Deeds (1757-1786), and Hardy Co. Wills (1786-1824) and Deeds (1786-1800). It did not have an abstract of the Hardy Co. Will (in 1824) that I was looking for, so it might not have all of them. 2) HARDY CO. WILLS. It is part of a many volume set (blue books) and is not indexed or alphabetized, but you might find something in it. Takes some time to look through, and I don't know how complete it is. 3) Ross Johnston's WV ESTATE SETTLEMENTS gives some information along the lines you are looking for. However, I think it only gives the basics, not the abstract or whole document, just where to . They have some things on microfilm, too. The site for WV State Archives is: <http://www.wvlc.wvnet.edu/history/wvsamenu.html> It lists the County Court Records on microfilm for each county. Happy searchin' Peg
I am looking for information regarding the parents/siblings and wives of Lawrence DeLawder who died in Hardy County around 1837. He lived for a time in Lawrence County, Ohio and his son Lawrence Jr. raised his family there. Are there any published courthouse records available such as will and estate abstracts, indexes to deeds, common pleas abstracts, marriage records? I am not sure when Hardy County was formed, and if it was part of another Virginia County prior to 1863. Any help would be appreciated. [email protected]

Seeking info on a Daniel Richmon b ca1822, probably in Hardy Co, now WV. He had brother Jesse and maybe Levi born about the same time. I don't have the 1850 census for Hardy, but, do have 1860 and 70. I see a Daniel Richman age 60, wife Lydia age 59. These look like possible parents for Daniel and his brothers. Am interested in finding the three sons in 1850 and learning more about this family. Thanks...Lyle Corder

Looking for the full name of the wife (first name Barbara) of Lawrence DELAWDER. He died in Hardy County in January, 1837. Is there a published index to the probate court records available for this time period? Any info appreciated. [email protected]
I am searching for any information on a Charles Howard Shifflett born in Beldor, VA and married to Vernie Sissy MORRIS. "Howard" and Vernie divorced ca. 1937-38 and Howard left Virginia. Howard worked all over the United States as a migrate worker. He had family near Hagerstown, Maryland and Martinsburg, WV as well as Rockingham Co., Virginia. We have been told that he could have settled anywhere in West Virginia. He may not have told anyone about his family in Virginia. I am also looking for Anna Irene Shifflett the daughter of Howard and Vernie. Anna was born ca. 1937 and left home at 16 years of age. She went by the name of Anna Irene Scott but was last known to go by Anna Irene Everett which may be her married name. She was seen in Baltimore, Md at one time. The family of Charles Howard and Vernie Shifflett have been searching for years for these two family members. I am hoping with the wide area that the internet covers that we will be able to find them or the area in which they are buried so that their family will know their final resting place. PLEASE, PLEASE, IF ANYONE KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT HOWARD OR ANNA IRENE, CONTACT ME. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP! Cathy Shifflett Phillips
