    1. KITES! Called Augusta County, 1740's ...
    2. Vincent Edward Summers
    3. Please help me, if you can. For I do not represent only myself, but a growing Email Group. Kitesmerger. To join, go to: http://Kitesmerger.listbot.com/ Now, to business: I have PA Kites, who LDS says migrated to Augusta County, Virginia, then went on to Ohio. Well, a researcher said to me that Augusta, that is, parts of it, went into Hardy and Hampshire Counties. Well, my James Kites, m. to Martha Wynne, the descendant of the famous physician to William Penn, Dr. Wynne... My James Kite had children, reputed by actual family tradition of the PA Kites, to have gone to Virginia, though where is not stated. However, LDS, which cannot be wrong every time! says that they went to Augusta County, then had issue: Mary Kite, b. 1742 Abraham Kite, b. 1743 Sarah Kite, b. 1744 Jonathan Kite, b. 1747 William Kite, b. 1748 James Kite, b. 1758 Now these may or may not have actually existed. At any rate, if they did, they were, most likely, Quaker. The family line was Quaker, and primarily one became Methodist, because he entered the Revolution. But if you notice, these are before the Revolution! Does anyone know of these? Reputedly, they all moved to Ross Co., OH. Why is this such a big deal to me? Because it can link the North and the South! PA and VA, hence OH, MI, MN, OR, WA, CA, ID, IA, and many, many other states! So... If you can help me, especially with actual source, or documentation, please do, won't you? Thanks, Vincent E. Summers Mail List Owner KITESMERGER

    1. Introduction/Core/Hider/Pancake/Franks/Cocke
    2. Brian D Core
    3. I'm looking for information about a GEORGE CORE, who I believe to be my 5th great grandfather. He leased lot number 12 in South Branch Manor from 1773 until 1775, when he assigned the lease to ANDREW PANCAKE. The lease assignment to Pancake was recorded in Hampshire County Deed Book 3, pp. 154-155. His adjoiners were listed as ADAM HIDER and Coke, who must be CHRISTOPHER COCKE, who leased one of the adjacent lots. The land was on the South Branch River, near the mouth of Lunice Creek. Since the land has been included in Hampshire, Hardy, and now Grant County, I thought it might be appropriate to subscribe to all three of these lists to look for information. The only other reference that I can find to George Core in Hampshire County is his inclusion on the rent rolls of South Branch Manor in 1775. Does anybody know how to find microfilm of the original rent rolls? My only source for the rent rolls has been Broderbund CD #310, which provides no documentation for the information. George's apparent son, Henry Core, stated in his Revolutionary War Pension application that he was born in Hampshire County in 1763, but I have no idea if his father had actually located there quite so early, since the earliest record I can find is 1773. I believe that this George Core was killed by Indians in Monongalia County in 1778, and that his sons Henry and John located in German Twp., Fayette Co., PA, and his sons Christopher and Michael located in Monongalia Co., (W)VA. I'd like to become familiar with the more obscure early genealogical resources of Hampshire County, so I can learn more about the Core family's presence there. I also have a backburner project involving the Franks family, from whom I'm also descended. Another 5th-great grandfather, MICHAEL FRANKS, obtained a patent in Green Spring Valley, Hampshire County, in 1770. He was a neighbor to MICHAEL CRESAP, LODOWICK CASTLEMAN, WILLIAM DOBSON, et al. believe that his grandson, HENRY FRANKS, claimed the land in the 1790's, years after Michael had left - also for German Twp., Fayette Co., PA. Henry Franks also later purchased land on Mill Creek, adjacent to ADAM HIDER, perhaps the same one mentioned above- although this purchase was made in 1813, some 40 years after George Core first purchased land adjacent to Hider. As I mentioned, I am looking for any resources that may help me learn more about the Core and Franks presence in Hampshire/Grant/Hardy Counties. Any information about the other families mentioned that may pertain to my families will be appreciated. Brian Brian D. Core P.O. Matthias W. is supposed to have been born in the South Branch area apx 1710, grew up in Berkeley County, and died in Hardy County. ??? and (2) the Jethro Nevill(e) family. He was the son of Joseph Neville Jr. and was supposedly born and brought up in the Hardy/Hampshire County area. I'm looking for information regarding his marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Nesbitt and children (Jethro Jr. and Lucy) to be in Moorefield in a few weeks and could use some coaching on where to look. 3. Looneys Creek is now "Lunice Creek" which enters the South Branch at Petersburg in what is now Grant County. I can't find a Benjamin Scotts Run (or Scotts Run) flowing into Lunice Creek, nor can I find a Powder Lick on my DeLorme map of West Virginia. There are runs originating in Hardy county that flow westward into Lunice Creek, and Scotts Run could be one of them. 1. Re: HYRE / HEYER FAMILY
    2. Sara Patton
    3. Kenneth, I was very interested in reading the Hyer family history as I have seen Leonard (Landred), Michael, Adam, and Rudy in numerous early (1740s-1750s) South Branch documents from Augusta, Frederick and Orange Counties. The earliest reference I found was on the 1742 Orange County Road petition for a road from the South Branch starting at "Hayard's Town" down the South Branch to John Upton's mill and east. While the Hyers did not sign the petition, I am convinced that Hayard's Town is a reference to the area settled by the Hyers near Petersburg. In other records, their name is often spelled Hyard, Hire, Hider, Highter, Hard, etc. As to the actual location of Leonard's farm on Lot 61 of the South Branch manor, you mention it was west of the Petersburg Airport. When I was doing some research in Hardy County, I came across a reference to Ft. George as being on or adjacent to this parcel but placing it closer to the mouth of Mill Creek which would be on the east side of Petersburg. Any comments from any Hardy Co researchers as to location of Ft. George? My George Zeh/See also settled that area in the late 1740s, locating at "the Gap" as mentioned in the Moravian missionary journals--which I take to be just down river from the mouth of Mill Creek east of Petersburg. I believe this is also where James Coburn had his mill when visited by Washington when he was doing surveys for Fairfax. I'd love to hear from anyone familiar with the geography of this area.
