Are there any researchers out there for the name of Ingle, Engle or Engles? If so, I would love to discuss the names of: James George md Margaret/ Peggy Engle, 19 Dec 1817, Hardy VA Sarah George md Solomon Ingle, 24 Jun 1823, Pendleton County, VA since James and Sarah are brother and sister, there may be a possibliity that Peggy and Solomon are also. If anyone has any insight into this family, I would love to discuss it further. Elaine
Dear List, Would anyone have the 1870 Census for Grant county at their disposal that is willing to do a lookup for me? If so I am interested in the family of Reuben George age 56 and Margaret George age 75 on page 270 Milroy District. Thank you so much for your kindness Elaine
Hey everyone...still trying to get information about my ggf, Thomas J. Mattingly.(born in Morefield in 1827 and moved to the district (DC) at age 6)...trying another angle...since he wasn't in the 1820 and 1830 Census for Hardy Co....tax list enumerated in a six year period...1827-1833...would there have been any? Also, as I'm assuming his family would have been Catholic, would anyone know if there is an old Catholic Church in the area that may have been in existence back in 1827? Would anyone on the list have any suggestions as to what records could possibly turn up clues in a 6-10 year time frame...say between 1825-1835? Another, wild shot...does anyone have knowledge of printers or any printing business in Morefield? Well, I'm up against a brick wall and will try any suggestions...Thanks so very much, Elizabeth
Margaret is going to include the information I came across on George Stump 1 and the page from the Alkire Bible in an addendum to my father's book, which will be reproduced on the Hardy County Family Album page. There's very little info on the Alkires. Emma Campbell

She was born in April 1830, in Virginia, and married HAMPTON SHROUT in 1848 or 1852. There is a DOROTHY BLAKE, daughter of JOHN B. BLAKE and CATHARINE, in the 1850 Hardy Co., (W) VA census, who was born at that time. However, John B. has his birthplace as Massachusetts, and in later censuses, Dorothy has her father's birthplace as OHIO (1900 Grant Co. Census) and VIRGINIA (1880 Grant Co. Census). Is anyone else working on this BLAKE family? I am going to Massachusetts soon and would like to do some research on Dorothy's ancestors, but am not sure 1) if John B. Blake is her father, and 2) if he was born in MA or OH or VA. 1850 HARDY CO., WV CENSUS: 1141-1154 - JOHN B. Dolly was born in Virginia, and her father was either born in Virginia or Ohio, by her account on the 1880 and 1900 Grant Co. censuses. Her mother was born in WV, by Dolly's record in the 1900 Grant Co., WV census. At this time, it seems most likely that she was the d/o JOHN B. and CATHERINE (--) BLAKE, because they have a Dorothy, age 20, in their house for the 1850 Hardy Co., (W) VA Census. However Dorothy gives her father's birthplace as OHIO, and VA in the1880 and 1900 Grant Co. Censues, NOT in MA, like John B. Blake. Dolly was the d/o Mr. and (----) (SUNNIFRANK) BLAKE, according to family tradition and research handed down to me from my great aunt Helen (Green) Smith. SUNNIFRANK sp. SONIFRANK; SONAFRANK; SUNEFRANK; etc. There were Sonifranks in the area, which adds credence to this family tradition. Anyone out there know of a Blake-Sunnifrank marriage around 1820-1830? In 1848 or 1852, DOROTHY, "DOLLY," married HAMPTON H. LEONARD SHROUT, a blacksmith of Big Cappon in Hardy County, (W) VA and of the Falls/ Greenland Gap area of Grant County, (West) Virginia. Dear listers, I have recently built a web page for the descendants of Reuben George born 1749 possibly of Culpepper VA , died 1832 of Pendleton VA. Several children moved into Hardy/Grant county of VA/WV If you have any interest in this line please access it at http://www.tctwest.net/~asemmett/ I would be interested in any response you may have to add additional documentation. Thank you Elaine
I don't know the specific answer for this question, however during the 1880's and 1890's it was extremely popular to have a map and directory of your town made. I have seen many maps and directories for the Shenandoah Valley (plus in my Historical Geography class, we discussed this national fad). My guess is Moorefield had one made during this time period (I'm sure they weren't about to be left out of the fad!). Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Stump researchers: In an old file of my father's papers, I came across some papers from the Harrison County Courthouse (sent to my father in 1978), with a family group sheet for George Stump 1 (born 1744), listing his parents as Michael Stump 1 and Catherine (no surname). The sheet shows George as married to Elizabeth Wilson (my father originally listed George's wife as Elizabeth Massey in his book about the Stumps, published in 1975, but corrected it in an errata sheet in 1979 to Wilson) , and lists their children and some of their spouses. There is also a sheet from the Mineral County Library, also sent to my father in 1978, with info from the "Alkire family Bible," which also lists info on George and Elizabeth Wilson Stump, and their (ten) children, and some info at the bottom about a Thomas Wheeler (b. 18?1, m. 1840), and his children, and that maybe his wife was Mahaly Alkire. I'm new to this list, so don't know if this info has already been posted, or if anyone is interested in it. Will post if there's interest. Emma (Stump) Campbell
Re-posting query for new subscribers: Benjamin Evans came to Hampshire County, VA (now WV) between 1805-1810. He was married to a Priscilla Bosley. They lived next to a CALEB EVANS and his wife Eve Waddel Evans. By 1830, Benjamin had moved one county over to Hardy County. The children were: Abraham, Edward (NED), Jacob, Nancy and Elinor. Benjamin stated on 1850 and 1860 census he was born in PA. Where in PA was he from? Who were his parents/sbiblings? Was CAleb a brother or uncle? Thanks so much...Mike Foreman, Winchester, VA
KNOWN DESCENDANTS OF LEONARD HIRE / HYRE By Kenneth W. Colby --------------------------- [email protected] ============================================================ The Hire / Hyre family settleted near Petersburg at a very early date likely the late 1740's. Their presence is attested by the inclusion of their names on the list of tithables in what was then Augusta County, Virginia. At this time before the formation of Hampshire County, Augusta included territories to the mighty Mississippi River, and even included the Ohio River and parts of southwest Pennsylvania. The family is of Swiss origin, Swisher a family historian (1977,p9-15) describes the meeting held in the Lienert (Leonard) Hire / Hyre house at Benken, Switzerland in 1736, to discuss migrating to America. The outcome of this meeting is that on September 24, 1737, the ship :Virtuous Grace" landed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and there Lenhart Hier, (Leonard Hire / Hyre) signed the required oath of allegiance to the British Crown, called the Declaration of Fidelity and Adjuration, and gave his age as 40 years (Strassburger, 1966, Vol 1 p.175-177), born 1696. For a few years the Hire / Hyre family lived in Tulpenhocken then Berks County, Pennsylvania. They soon decided to migrate southward. Switcher suggests that sometime between 1743 and 1750, the families from Benken joined the overflow of German-speaking and Scotch-Irish settlers who took the Great Wagon Road in search of new lands in the back country of Maryland and Virginia. In the steep mountain valleys of the South Branch river (Potomac), here, they had found a likeness to the landscape they remembered and loved in the Swiss Alps. Here they were members of the Church of the Brethren. The Hire / Hyre land was located on the south side of the South Branch, and here Leonard Hire / Hyre wrote his will on March 13, 1768, and proved in Hampshire County, May 12, 1772. Mentioned in his will are his wife Clara, to whom he leaves his land, house and goods as long as she lives, and the following six children: Leonard, Rudolph, Barbara, Elizabeth, Eve, Magdaline, and another daughter mentioned separately, Osilla. Leonard Hire / Hyre, son of Leonard was baptized on December 25, 1727, in Benken, Switzerland, and came with his parents to America, where he settled in Augusta County, Virginia. He was named in the will of his father and received the plantation by paying one hundred pounds to his brethren. He also served as executor of the will. He is listed in the Virginia Public Claims for Hampshire County, during the American Revolutionary War ( Commissioner's Books: III, p118, IV, p 325) which makes his descendants eligible for membership in the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. Leonard Hire / Hyre wrote his will on April 7, 1783, in Hampshire County and it was proven in Hardy County, ( which was formed Hampshire) Book 1, p 2-3, on June 16, 1786. It was the second will to be recorded in Hardy county, Virginia. Mentioned in his will are his wife (Anna Maria) called Mary, whose will was also found in Will Book 1. She was also called Mary in the will of her father Peter Hass, which was proven in Hampshire county in 1776. The children of Leonard and Mary were: Leonard, John, Jacob, Lewis, Peter, who received Lot #61 on the South Branch, containing two hundred and twenty-three acres of his Lordship Thomas Fairfax, which Leonard received on August 3, 1773 (Deed Book 2 p. 15). The following children: Michael, Rudolph, their father gave Lot #58, on the east side of the South Branch, containing one hundred and four acres. One third of both lots "excepted unto my beloved wife Mary....for and during her natural life." To his daughter Mary he gave money. Jacob Hire / Hyre, named in the will of his father Leonard, was born May 25, 1757 in Hampshire County, Virginia, enlisted in 17779 and served as a private in Colonel Van Meters Virginia Regiment, and took an active part in Claypool Rebellion (Plamer 1875 p. 113-114), before removing to Monongalia County, in February 1782, where he served in Captain George Jackson's Regiment until the end of the war, 1783. He returned to the South Branch Hardy County where he married in August of 1783 to Elizabeth Powers, who was born in Hampshire County in 1758 and died in Upshur County, June 27, 1851 age 93 years. Jacob died in Lewis County, March 6, 1841. Where we found in Deed Book B. p. 503, a deed between Jacob and his wife Elizabeth to their daughter Mary Hire / Hyre, wife of Henry Jackson (son of John and Elizabeth Cummins Jackson), see History of Ritchie County, by Minnie Kendall Lowther, 1913 p. 80-85 also History of Upshur County, by W. B. Cutright 1977 p. 181 Jacob and his brother John, both named in the will of their father Leonard Hire / Hyre, were members of the first Buckhannon Baptist congregation which worshiped in a log structure built about 1786, on a hill above Fink's Run on today's Hall Road, in Upshur County, then in the old county of Lewis. It is not known if this might have been an early Brethren Church. The gravestones that once stood in the cemetery, on Hall Road , were moved with the graves in 1979 to its present site in the Heavener Cemetery, where Bush's Fort once stood. Here on row #8 , block #2, are the graves of Jacob Hire / Hyre, his wife Elizabeth, and their daughter Mary Hyre Jackson who was born in Lewis County, Virginia June 4, 1784 and died June 6, 1835. It should be pointed out here that the records show this family as Hire, until after Jacob received his pension #7856, and the government wrote it as Hyre. Books used in the story are: THE BRETHREN ENCYCLOPEDIA, Philadelphia, PA, and Oak Brook, IL Vol 1, A-I page 602. By the Brethren Encyclopedia Inc. 1983. I wrote an e-mail to this site called "Just Pray". I did not intend to hurt anyone with this. My point was to see how many out there would reply. I have 14 right now that did not like this e-mail. My point was to see, how many out there who are inter rested not only in dates and places of our family lines, but interested in the truth of what our ancestors gave us, and to this great country, the freedom that we have to free speech. Like Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, George Washington and the lists go's on. Are we to forget this part of our family tree ?
