    1. 2 Helen Yoakum Black Letters: re: Harness, Yoakum, Stump, See Families
    2. Sara Patton
    3. Several of those who asked me to send the two Helen Yoakum Black Letters were unable to read the footnotes at the bottom of each page (46 total). Thanks to one persistent recipient, the following should work for Microsoft Word users: "To view the footnotes, go to the "View" pull-down menu and select "Page Layout". The footnotes themselves are not viewable in any of Word's four other view modes. The default view for my software (and probably for most people's) is "normal" view." For those of you with the Wordperfect version, I think if you just save the attachment to your hard drive and open it from there rather than on e-mail, you should be able to read the footnotes. If not, I will retype or cut and paste all of the footnotes onto a couple of pages and send it. If any one has an idea how to send a document with a footnote format, please let me know, I'm stumped!!! Sara Patton PS I'm sending this to the various lists and hope that any individuals who already received the letters (without footnotes) will correspond directly with me to try to work it out! Sorry!

    2. James Moreland
    3. HELLO! First timer for this list, hope some cousins still exist... Any info on Henry Moreland married Mary Smith , son Henry Hanson Moreland born 1826 married Rebecca Jane Lee abt. 1850 . Henry Hanson abandoned his home during the Civil War and moved west to Grant and Hampshire counties. I am really currious about the land they once owned, my Grandfather Ernest Moreland , after graduating college in Buckhannon in 1907-8 , rode back to the home place to try an reclaim the property for his Grandfather. The Sherrif told him the land had been abandoned too long and a new owner had claimed said property. Who should I contact for said land records? And is Hardy county known as part of the Shenondoah Valley? Thanks you! May we all have a thankful Thanksgiving! Sincerely, Jim Moreland Ohio

    1. Special Thanksgiving Proclamation
    2. mary s. wilson
    3. Thanksgiving Proclamation by Abraham Lincoln Proclamation of Thanksgiving Washington, D.C. October 3, 1863 This is the proclamation which set the precedent for America's national day of Thanksgiving. During his administration, President Lincoln issued many orders like this. For example, on November 28, 1861, he ordered government departments closed for a local day of thanksgiving. The holiday we know today as Thanksgiving was originally recommended to Lincoln by Sarah Josepha Hale, a prominent magazine editor. Her letters to Lincoln urged him to have the "day of our annual Thanksgiving made a National and fixed Union Festival." The document below sets apart the last Thursday of November "as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise." According to an April 1, 1864 letter from John Nicolay, one of Lincoln's secretaries, this document was written by Secretary of State William Seward, and the original was in his handwriting. Fellow Cabinet member Gideon Welles recorded in his diary on October 3 that he complimented Seward on his work. A year later, the manuscript was sold to benefit Union troops and since then has disappeared. ===================================================== By the President of the United States of America. A Proclamation. The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed. Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the Unites States the Eighty-eighth. By the President: Abraham Lincoln William H. Seward, Secretary of State -

So..... if I wanted to find information on a person who was in the Northwestern part of what is now the George Washington National Forest around the year 1783, would a trip to the Romney, WV Library be best or a court house trip to Moorefield, WV for the land records of that area, at that time. 2. Elaine Emmett
    3. Is there an expert out there on the area of Hardy county that became Grant? I spent three days at the Library in Salt Lake and poured over all of the Grant Cemetery listings, Hardy will, death and probate records and came up with a zero. Elizabeth George w/o James Jr. died between 1850 and 1860 James George Sr. h/o Margaret died between 1850 and 1860 both appeared on page 61 of the 1850 Census, 23 District. Neither appeared on the 1860 Census. James Jr appears on the 1860 Census, pg 647, Luney's creek post office, new wife. Margaret appears on the 1870 Census Milroy District, pg 270, household of Mary Henkle and dies 1872 Milroy District. Do you have any suggestions? Where should I look? Are the records of Hardy county in good order or have a lot of them not been filmed or did a lot get destroyed in the Civil War? Now that I think about it, I looked through the Milroy Cemeteries because that is where Margaret died. If she was taken to rest beside her husband --- where would 23 district be? Thank you for all of your help and suggestions. Elaine
