    1. Orphan Court Records or the like
    2. It has been suggested to me that I post to the list for information regarding orphan court records or something similar to that which may have existed back in 1827....I have come up with nothing for my great-great-grandfather who was born in Moorefield, WVA in 1827 per his death certificate and obit (the death certificate specifies Moorefield but the death certificate only state WVA)...he moved to DC when he was six years old....his name is Thomas J. (Joseph) Mattingly born June 2, 1827...I have found no Mattinglys listed in the Moorefield or Hardy Co Census back then...would anyone on the list be able to help me? I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions....Sincerely, Elizabeth in Fairport, NY

    3. Howdy--- There is a map/drawing that shows Fort Pleasant in the position described in your note below, however, the map/drawing is of dubious authenticity and therefore should not be trusted. The exact location of the fort has not been conclusively determined. In addition to the names of Van Meter's Fort and Fort Pleasant, it was also known as Waggoner's Lower Fort, named after Va. Reg't captain Thomas Waggoner who was in charge of the construction of this fort and another farther upstream at Petersburg, Grant County (known as Waggoners Upper Fort and then Fort Defiance). Neighbors were enlisted to carry chains and other duties during surveys, so Stalnaker was likely living in the vicinity at the time of the survey. It's a long shot, but you might want to try searching the Library of Congress's digital version of George Washington's papers: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/gwhtml/gwhome.html Perhaps Stalnaker sold crop surplus or animals to the colony (through GW) and an account of the transaction is in GW's papers---a long shot, but it won't cost anything but a little time. Good luck--- TG [email protected] wrote: > Hi Terry--again, > > The date of the survey is 1764--possibly 1766. It is survey listing from > Joyner's N Neck Land Grants. 2. Hi Terry--again, The date of the survey is 1764--possibly 1766. It is survey listing from Joyner's N Neck Land Grants. I was thrown at first (GNIS server was down at the time) when I saw that Mudlick ran east and then turned almost due south to meet Anderson Run. GNIS said that the location of the Fort was just to the NE of these streams meeting. Van Meter's Fort was another of a few names for the same fort. My big interest was actually placing where Jacob Stalnaker Sr. was at this survey, since he is listed as a chain carrier. I have a blank period--1760 (when he is charged with assault in Frederick Co., Va) and 1772 (approx) when he is in the Tygarts Valley. Am hoping those lost files will produce more. Anyway............thanks much again and Happy Holidays Bill

    3. Thanks---yeah, Mudlick Run ran right by the walls of the second Fort Pleasant built around 1770-75. If what you have has the fort and Van Meter's Run Gap on it, then perhaps the Gap is about 1 mile NW of the fort along the run---there is a sort of gap there that the old Rt. 220 road cuts through. 3. You're probably out of luck - Virginia/WV didn't start keeping vital records until 1853. The best you could hope for is to find a will or appointment of administrator for his estate. I'm not too familiar with the cemetery inscriptions of Hampshire County, since my most recent lineal ancestor apparently left the area ca. 1775. Good luck! Brian Brian D. Core P.O. I am hoping one of you can give me some insight. On every census he listed his birthdate as 1799. His wife was Mary, b 1802. He is last shown on the 1880 Gasconade Co, MO census living with his son, Thomas Benton, at age 81. Hardy Deed Book 14, page 487, dated 9 Nov. 1836 shows him having inherited land from his father Leonard. It lists his wife as Polly/Mary. This land is being transfered to Leonard Bonnet - on the waters of the South Fork of the South Branch of Potomac River supposed to contain about thirty-five acres, more or less, and bounded on the N.E. by the lands of A. Stump and on the S.W. by the lands of A. Bonnett. So, the question is who is his father, Leonard? Leonard who married Elizabeth See? Or, although the dates are off, Captain Leonard Stump who married Mary Morrow in 1820 and who died 1826? Or, is *he* Captain Leonard Stump who married Mary Morrow???? ACK! I have also seen his parents listed as Michael II & Sarah Hughes... ?? Confused, Miz Laine in AZ >> DITTO... "Very confused." I sent for a DAR application copy and it only muddies the waters.. the DAR okayed it.. but until proven otherwise, I can't send them a correction.. I descend from the same Leonard and wife, Mary.. found in Franklin Co. MO ca. 1836 w/ a slave and then in Gasconade Co MO in 1850 with his family.... ELLIE <a cousin of Laine>

    3. I would like to ask a question and hopefully someone can tell me. If a family lived in Romney, Hampshire County, South Branch where would I look for a death record about 1846? I would like to find where he is buried. In his son's civil war pension papers South Branch is where a POLING stated the WHITES and POLINGS lived. This is a James WHITE, who died and left a wife Elizabeth Robinson WHITE and 5 children. A William and Lucinda ROBINSON were listed with Elizabeth and the children on the 1850 census. James and Elizabeth were married 1834 and I need to find their parents. Maybe I am searching for the wrong records for then. Any suggestions as to where or what to look for. Thanks for any suggestions. Thelma and my email is [email protected] Michigan

    3. Can't tell you about Pine Bush Run, unless you can give it to me in context (if on a land grant), Van Meter's Run gap is probably a saddle on the eastern slope of Sawmill Ridge, which is the mountain that forms the eastern wall of The Trough (near Old Fields, Hardy County---on the Hampshire/Hardy line). Fort Pleasant was located at the south or upper end of The Trough (see article "Fort Pleasant: Soldiers and Civilians in the South Branch Valley, 1756-1762" in the COLONIAL NOTES section of the Hardy County GenWeb page). 3. Yes. The Lost River valley meets up with the headwaters of the Shennandoah and provides a natural travel route between the two counties. To get an Idea of the route on HWY 259 see this website: http://www.turnerhams.com/ Thanks, Mark -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, December 20, 1999 4:11 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Geography lesson Could someone tell me how close Hardy County and Rockingham County are to each other? 2. Hi Mark, None of my maps had the location, although I have yet to use my DeLorme software. I did narrow it down to an area around Old Field in Hardy County and a little way west of South Branch, if not right on. Other geographic mentions for the area are Mudlick Run and Anderson Run and where they come together. Thanks, Bill

    3. Hardy County Researchers: I would like to communicate with anyone researching the HAND or BADGLEY families of Hardy County in the late 1700's. These families left Hardy County 1797-98 and joined a group of 150 people that floated the Ohio river from Pittsburgh, PA to Shawneetown, IL. Both families settled near St. Clair County, IL. Some of the Hands may have settled in Montgomery County, KY. Mr. Badgley was a (Baptist?) minister. Any communications would be appreciated.
