Just curious, but wouldn't someone who spent full time weaving be called a webster? Rick Kitchen ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

The term spinster did apply to usually the youngest daughter being unmarried stayed home to take care of her older parents. >> In my research of WV families in the 1700s-1900s, most older parents (especially if one was widowed or widowered) moved in to the home of one of the children. I can't say what the practice was in the 1600s or 1500s. Records are sparse. But I spent quite a bit of time with a weaver at Williamsburg, Virginia, talking about practices and duties during the colonial and post-colonial days. Fascinating day. Diane
In a message dated 5/27/2000 7:06:24 PM Mountain Daylight Time, Smlathrum writes: << I believe the term "spinster" came from the fact that spinning (cotton, wool, flax) was so vitally important to a family that one of the daughters was to remain unmarried and spend her days spinning for the family. She may also have done the weaving but that was less labor intensive and much faster than the spinning. It would have required someone spinning virtually full time to produce enough thread/yarn to in turn produce the woven fabric needed by each family. I >> There are two meanings for spinster. Spinner is correct for large family. Often the oldest daughter eligible for marriage was responsible for spinning (hence 'spinster' was adopted) that passed the product to the mother (or grandmother sometimes) for knitting, weaving, etc. The next youngest daughter was responsible for combing, etc. (cotton, wool, whatever). The older you got, the easier the job was. The youngest usually had to go out and collect, bleach, clean, etc. Really nasty job. But in all the 25,000+ people I have in my database, I've never run across a family in US or England that purposefully never allowed a woman to remain unmarried and stayed at home. Also, in that time period (1800s) there were bolts of cloth available. Some families did have sheep, flax etc for spinning and weaving, but it was not an all consuming passion. I believe the email concerning Elizabeth was her marriage status only. Hope this helps. Diane
Being a weaver , spinner at a living museum. The term spinster did apply to usually the youngest daughter being unmarried stayed home to take care of her older parents. The spinning was all consuming, as was the harvesting and preparation of flax for linen. Men usually did the weaving in the winter months, if an area was fortunate there would be a traveling weaver that would weave for the area for some kind of payment. I think this all depended what part of the country one lived. In remote areas, Ohio even , before 1820 this was a way of life for families. In Hardy Co, I have found evidence for my line in wills that spinning and weaving equipment was passed on or sold until about 1823. The head of the family had come from Delaware and did weaving for people in that area. I've often wondered if that was a position he held in Hardy Co. but have never found evidence to support that. He died in 1789, and his son retained the equipment until his death about 25 years later. Barbara

In early suits, the women is usually identified as being married to a named individual unless, of course, she is not married, in which the term "spinster" is applied. >> I agree. On many, many marriage licenses, I see the term spinster (never married) or widowed (spouse died) in back of the woman's name. I have seen widowered after the man's name to mean the same. If he was never married before, it's either left blank, or bachelor or single was added. Hope this helps. Diane
Terry, Thanks. To tell you the truth, I'm of the generation who well remembers maiden aunts being called "spinsters." It is really a wicked word to describe unmarried sisters and aunts, probably alluding to spiders, witches or something. I think I'll look up it's origin in Oxford. Never thought to do that before. However, I think the observation by my cousin that Elizabeth was a weaver is valid, considering she stole the flax thread and supplies. I think Elizabeth's forebears were John Elswick and Rachel Unknown, whose land George Washington surveyed for Lord Fairfax; Their deed for the land was one of the first fifteen recorded in then Hampshire Co., Va., (or later Hardy). I think her grandfather, John Elswick II, was killed at Draper's Meadows. But can't prove Elizabeth's parents yet. By the way, did you ever document Archibald Thompson's service in the French and Indian War? I'm now trying to reconcile his land grants in Virginia and Kentucky to his military service in the Revolution. Would appreciate any help. A new transcript by Lula Hankins Hunter of Archibald Thompson's Diary is now on line at http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/archibald/ Lula deciphered many new entries that detail some of the early militia battles.
