Clayton H. Hobbs, 66, of Laurel Heights, Chester, former sheriff of Hancock County, died Friday at 1:20 p.m. at the Extended Care Center here following a lingering illness. He was born Dec. 2, 1907, in Chester, a son of Charles Hobbs and Joanna Hunter Hobbs. Mr. Hobbs was retired in 1972 from the Weirton Steel Division of the National Steel Corp. worked in plant security and was a member of the 25 Year Club. He served as sheriff from 1956-1960. Mr. Hobbs was a member of the First Christian Church of Chester, Masonic Lodge 142 of Chester, RAM No. 14 Hancock Chapter of New Cumberland, Weirton Commandery 30, Knights Templar, Osiris Shrine Temple of Wheeling, the Northern Panhandle Shrine Club and the 142 Club of Chester. He had been active in various fund campaigns and charitable organizations. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Virginia P. Foreman Hobbs, at home; two sons, Clayton H. (Bud) Hobbs Jr. of New Cumberland RD and Robert S. Hobbs of New Manchester; a daughter, Miss Frances Lynn Hobbs, at home, and six grandchildren. Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. from the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester by the Rev. Dan Evans of the New Manchester Christian Church. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, New Manchester. Friends may call at the chapel tonight after 7 and Sunday afternoon and evening.
